Members Novarunner Posted March 10 Members Posted March 10 In Os Donos do Jogo, Profeta is from “Campos”. Is that short for Campos dos Goytacazes? Has anyone been there? Anybody out there want to recommend another good Brazilian Netflix series? Quote
mobamboo Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Did you ever see 3%? The first season is interesting. Some of the acting is over the top. But the concept is fascinating. Basically, everyone competes for a spot in an elite island where there's no shortages of power, medicine or food. Only 3% make it through. Quote

It’s got a population of slightly under 500,000 and it’s the 5th largest city in the state of RJ. It’s a 7 hour drive from Rio, the city. I don’t see why anyone on a short stay in Brazil would venture out there. Quote

xpaulo Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago The Mechanism on Netflix first aired in 2018, two seasons. Corruption police investigating government contract fixing right up to the president's office (Lulu, who is president again despite the scandal). Great show. Quote
xpaulo Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago Another dated, but very good movie is City of God released in 2002 about young men growing up in the slums of Rio. I remember the DVD at the time included a short documentary about young men growing up in the favelas and the government deliberately putting political prisoners in prisons with gang members with the expectation the intelllectuals would be tormented and murdered by the gangs. Unexpectedly the political prisoners educated the gang members on how government policies created their extreme poverty. But the biggest takeaway for me was a line about how teenagers could never earn enough money to buy brand name runners like Nike and Addidas without turning to crime. I tried to find the name of the doc on google, but couldn't. chicobalto 1 Quote
