Every one of my favorite professors, even in so-called 'lecture' classes of 30+ students, leaned on us all to participate, and contribute, and be present, and make it a seminar. (The root etymology of whose word seems rather interesting... ) Mutual respect was the core principle given to us as students by those key figures. The first time we had been treated as true, full, responsible adults. (My parents treated me that way, and asked much; but these university teachers were the first adults not bound by some family obligation to ask the best of us.) It was beyond glorious.
  14. Brutal honesty: The sellers are young. The buyers are old. You are in the latter category. Simple truth of life.

  16. Agree -- somewhat -- with the above. But the overriding thing (as only realized by Madison, some 20 years after the Constitutional Convention) is that what the Framers originally thought was a failing, in not achieving a precise definition of the separation of powers, was in fact the opposite -- that the genius of the American constitutional system is its ever-precarious, and ever-dynamic, contest and conflict among the various federal branches, and then among all the differing federal, state and local centers of power. So political events & seasons of will will go back and forth. But your projection here that the federal layer holds all the power is very far from the real case.
  17. I actually met him one time when he came to visit the Duke U. campus while I was ensconced there as a sophomore [so to speak ]. He was giving a show in Raleigh, and wanted just to look over the Duke campus's gorgeous Gothic architecture while he was in the area. He also ate lunch in the student dining hall, and subsequently made to the news media some rather hilarious remarks, which I now forget, about the abominable quality of the roast beef. Something along the classic lines of how bad it was, but what a mercy there was so little of it. A friend of mine got Red to autograph the copy of Dante's Inferno that the friend happened to be carrying at the time. The symbolism of that surreal moment has, 37 years later, still yet to gel in mine own mind. But I'm sure it will, one day.

This quote from above is a microcosm of what it was like to sit in lecture class with Eco! "...It is like making love in a confessional with a prostitute dressed in a prelate's liturgical robes reciting Baudelaire while ten electronic organs reproduce the Well Tempered Clavier played by Scriabin..."
