There was a really long and funny article I read about how, in the final days, Sidney Powell and some of her amateur law team showed up at the White House to try to persuade Trump to give breaking The Constitution one more try. Trump wanted to, of course. He called the "official" White House counsel in to the meeting. And they literally started swearing at each other. I don't recall the exact quotes. But you had smart lawyers who worked for Trump saying, "This is bullshit. This is stupid. This is breaking the law. This won't work." They went up to the residence and pigged out on chicken fingers and talked it to death well into the evening. Is Trump capable of at least going along for the ride on super weird and dumb shit? Yes, of course he is. That's what that episode proves to me. There was an article today on how Musk's merry band of sadists is now inside the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and ready to fuck that up good. The union that protects those workers got off a line in a press release about how Musk's "amateur code writers" have already wreaked havoc on a previously reliable and private data system. So I don't buy for one minute that these people have any fucking clue what they are doing, even when it comes to technology. Musk's cars are twice as likely to kill you as any other. He fired the FAA head because he was against innovative things Musk demands, like ignoring public safety standards. So could these people, given a few years, cook up some weird crypto shit that blows up the global economy, like subprime did? I doubt it. My hope is that they are going after easy targets, like USAID. Who cares about foreign aid? Or obscure targets Trump's rich donors hate, like the CFPB. For what it is worth, Trump has said they will keep 600 rather than 300 USAID workers, out of 10,000, who work on humanitarian programs. Maybe he does not want to own a wave of AIDS deaths because we gut good HIV prevention programs. So the pushback is having some, albeit minimal, impact. Hopefully it keeps them away from Medicare, Medicaid, student loans, and other core programs. And hopefully it keeps them away from weird crypto shit. But I have zero confidence that Trump, left to his own resources, would not bankrupt or blow up the planet with the help of a bunch of "dirtbags". The cast of that potential tragedy is assembling right before our eyes.

To be specific, in a Jan 5-8 You Gov poll Musk was 43/46 unfavorable. So three points net unfavorable. Not great. But among voters 18-29, it was 48/42 favorable. They were the only age group that saw Musk net favorably. Meanwhile, in that early January survey, men liked Musk (53/42) while women disliked him (34/50). So my assumption was that Musk is pretty popular among young men who used to be kinda sorta Berniecrats. Makes sense. Rogan was for Bernie before he was for Trump. Things have changed. In a Feb 2-4 YouGov poll Musk is now 43/49 net unfavorable. Not a huge shift, yet. My sense is, "Give it time." He is still wildly unpopular among women. Among men it is now only 50/46 favorable. So he barely has a majority of men on his side, and he is losing that it seems. Among the young, 19-29, massive shift. He is now 37/52 unfavorable. So he moved from six points net favorable among young voters to 15 points net unfavorable. This is a twofer. I was worried that maybe young men actually like this. The two brave female House members who stormed into Speaker Johnson's office today were criticized as being "rude" and "extremely aggressive" in their effort to protect our most basic privacy. Ya think? After what Musk is doing? So there is no evidence so far that voters like what the cruel asshole is doing. Quite the opposite, especially among young voters. Trump reads the polls. He ain't gonna like this. It also confirms, I think, that a lot of young voters, especially guys, cast ignorant votes. They are tuned out of politics. And for some all it took was an amusing Nelk Boys video saying Harris sucks, and is all about pronouns. The fact that opinions could shift so quickly when someone attacks the government (and student loans - that's coming) says maybe these people didn't really understand exactly what they were voting for, after all. Who knew? It helps. Because when the prodigal sons want to come home I think they should be welcome. But that is only after much more endless pain and misery. Who needed student loans anyway? Now we have a rich Daddy who knows how to protect us. We just have to figure out which Daddy. Or not. Trump will do that for us, too. Or maybe Bernie. Mark Halperin has a polite way of calling Trump a liar. He has said repeatedly that the first three letters in News are new. So Trump is one of the hardest politicians in the world to cover. Because Trump lies every time he opens his mouth. So what is new? Haven't said it, so I will here. Halperin nailed this race with his analysis far better than any other individual. Including Ron Brownstein, who is still my favorite. Brownstein did not guess anything wrong. He is still brilliant. But I think Halperin worked particularly hard to listen to, and understand, what was happening in this chaotic mess of an election. That said, partly because he is a reporter and, I think, a cynic, Halperin seems to be far too willing to go along for the ride. But he was right all along that, in the end, so are a lot of Americans who are not really fans of Trump. Worth remembering when they decide they want something new and better. Again.

I will add a few addendums to my post above. Part of my point is I would rather spread and discuss facts, as opposed to the lies and ignorance that come out of some Tik Tok videos, or Trump's mouth. Peter Navarro thankfully said today that this is a drug war, not a trade war. Is Trump too stupid or dishonest to call it that? Like it was not at all clear how raising the price of cars for young Trump voters, or getting auto workers who voted for Trump fired, helps us win a "trade war". It is still not clear how getting auto workers fired helps us fight fentanyl. But at least someone other than Trump is calling it what it is. On that note, CNBC reported this: I would have guessed that, and I think most people would. Why are we picking on Canada to get them to stop committing crimes they don't commit? And why should US auto workers and consumers pay for non-existent Canadian crimes with their jobs and even more expensive cars? This is more Trump ignorance and stupidity and bluster. That CATO report I hyperlinked above and other sources confirm that, even at the Southern border, almost all the smuggling is being done by US citizens. Even if it is the cartels hiring them. Because it is harder to stop them. Little of the fentanyl smuggling is by undocumented immigrants. So even at the Southern border, it is not clear how getting Mexican cops at the border stops US citizens from getting drugs past the US officials that need to catch them as they re-enter. CATO, which is conservative, argues that this is stupid Whack-A-Mole that will fail. And the only way to stop the fentanyl epidemic is by reducing demand. I'm not 100 % sure I buy that. But evidence for CATO being right is the last 8 years. Homan is a failed, stupid man with a loud mouth. He spent years playing Whack A Mole, and saying dumb shit, and getting young Americans killed. The problem exploded on Trump's watch. About 100,000 Americans were dying each year by the time Homan slinked away with no apology. He was only good at getting Americans killed, like Musk is good at so far. Biden's record was not exactly stellar. But he did reverse the trend, so that in his last year fentanyl deaths were going substantially down. One of the reasons Biden was reversing the trend is drug treatment paid for by Medicare or Medicaid. Suggesting maybe CATO is on to something. Trump and Musk, if he is not fired, will probably go after that. So like from 2017 to 2020, Homan and Trump will say dumb shit, play Whack A Mole, and irritate our neighbors ineffectively. And probably dismantle things that actually reduce demand so they can cut taxes and regulations for Elon Musk. What losers!

Just on a symbolic level, it makes no sense to start a war against fentanyl by hiring the guy who let fentanyl run loose in the first place. And I don't mind him strong arming poor Justin as part of a serious plan to stop fentanyl trafficking. It's actually great news.
