One other nice thing about a few Ezra Klein pieces is he reminds us how totally in the dark lots of voters are. They basically do rely on Tik Tok for news. So I wouldn't underestimate how much of this is just based on vibe and, basically, almost total ignorance. Especially among young voters. I don't really understand it, and I don't like it. But it is what it is. So, to put a fine point on it, am I the White guy saying young Black and Hispanic men are racist because they voted for a racist like Trump? That kind of sounds foolish. The part of it that I literally brag about to my rich Romneyesque nephew, who I adore, is that these days the Republicans actually runs Black men for Senator in South Carolina, and Guv in Florida. That is NOT the Republican Party of my youth, or even his youth. (He lives in Tennessee, the birthplace of the Klan. But his neighbors include affluent Blacks who are in and out of his house all the time, in part because he has a Black nephew.) So when I am talking to him I make a point of saying that this is a Republican Party that is at least trying to be inclusive. That's the plus side. In the sense that I'm a liberal who agrees with elements of the "progressive" vision that turn a lot of median voters off. This is where Ruy Teixeira and his endless and somewhat angry rants are useful. He wrote the book The Emerging Democratic Majority. On a personal note, I bought that book while at my alma mater in Minnesota shortly after Paul Wellstone died in a plane crash, and Carleton had a symposium on his legacy. This was in the run up to the Iraq War. So the very idea "The Emerging Democratic Majority" seemed like a cruel joke in that moment. But Teixeira and Judis were right. The democratic majority did start to emerge under Obama, for at least a few years. Teixeira has a laundry list of issues where Democrats are out of touch with the median voter. The median voter likes an "all of the above" energy strategy. Lefties want a Green New Deal. The median voter wants immigration enforcement, which they got under Obama, aka Deporter In Chief. Leftists and immigration groups seemingly wanted open borders. Then there is crime. I'm not sure how much these fringey issues like transgender actually matter. At the very least, we know from 2024 that you could use it as a symbol against Kamala Harris to say "these Democrats are not like us." All that said, I actually think it's more basic than that. I think Obama promised real change, but he did not deliver. Most young people in my family, Millennials and Zoomers, basically feel they live in a system where they are screwed. And politics is not meant to work for them. I don't quite buy that. By every statistic I have seen, younger generations have higher incomes and net worth at the same age than Boomers did. In large part because they are college educated. But perception is reality. I actually buy it more from Trump's working class supporters, many of whom used to be Democrats and voted for Obama. We lost 6 million factory jobs, mostly under W. People's lives and communities were decimated. Obamacare is a good thing, and most people like it. But it was like a Band Aid. I think this is the challenge of the Democratic Party. Somehow it has to be inclusive, including of very progressive people, without turning off the median voter. In practice, there is a two letter solution: NO. I think Obama was just better than Biden at saying no. This is what drove Teixeira crazy. All these progressive college-educated partisans said he was too moderate or racist or whatever. He clearly grew to despise the very people trying to build the democratic majority he wanted, and still wants. Some Democrat is going to have to come along, like FDR or like Reagan was for the conservatives, and put the pieces of a new deal together. Trump has clearly failed to do that, after two tries. Biden failed too. But, again, if you look at Mexico it is quite possible to put together a working class New Deal that is overwhelmingly popular. This is what 2028 will be all about. Happily, I think Trump just flung the door wide open for Democrats. Oil is going through the roof. The stock market looks like it is about to collapse. We now have monthly job losses. We have a war Trump can't explain that most Americans don't want. I think he is toast. I used to say at least he is not as bad as W. Now that he is doing his thing with no restraints, he is far far worse. He is a fucking disgrace.

Everything Trump is doing is by choice. He did not have to cut health care. Or start a war. Speaking of which, a second three letter answer: OIL. It has now spiked to $120 a barrel. Trump is fucked. This is on the girl killing girl raping war mongering felon. He is a threat to economic growth, and a threat to civilization. And now on to Ezra: Ezra Klein: This Is How Democrats Win I think that's a great piece. There are three things that struck me the most. 1. The fact that Ezra Klein is saying this is part of the problem. It confirms that college educated liberals who read the New York Times are not who we need to worry about. He quotes books with lovely phrases that people in Montana who did not go to college didn't read and don't care about. Ruben Gallego does better when he talks about young Hispanic men who want to buy big ass trucks. 2. Elitist or not, Klein understands people won't vote for a party that does not respect them. Or that they feel does not respect them. And this is hard. Newsom, who has pretty good approval ratings, goes to red parts of California all the time. And he knows that there is nothing he can say or do that will change the minds of people who have an aversion to him for who he is. 3. That said, build the biggest fucking tent we can. It is not either/or. This is exactly what makes good politicians good. Biden was very good at this, in his day. Were he younger, and had there been no COVID + inflation, things might have been different. We need a leader that can unify different ends of the party. This is why I like Newsom. Whatever his flaws, he has demonstrated he can do that in the fourth biggest economy in the world, get re-elected, and maintain decent approval ratings. I'll add one more. Be Paul Wellstone. He is now revered in Minnesota politics. When I knew him, because I consider him my mentor, he was a left wing Jew college professor who people saw as an unelectable gadfly. Democrats had not been elected Senators for over a decade. Paul convinced farmers and union people that his opponent was a rich fat cat and he would fight like hell for them. And he did. Minnesota went from a red state to a blue state on his watch. And as a US Senator he had a lot to do with it. AMLO did the same in Mexico, which was a decades long labor of passion and love. These are two examples that show it can be done. Si se puede.

What is favorable to Trump is not necessarily good for the US, or the world, of course. But in this case my own very strong opinion is that it is in the interest of the US, and Iran, and the world to make this a short war. And let both sides declare victory and end it. For Iran the victory is survival. The US tooks its best shot, and could not achieve the stated goal of defeating the theocratic/military regime. Wiles is the kind of person who may be able to nudge Trump in that direction. Hegseth is not, in my opinion. He must be loving his star turn, as disastrous as it will be in the long run. Hegseth may be assassinated. The Iranian regime does not play games. They will happily kill their own people. It would be a logical thing to do, just like it was logical before now for Trump to kill Soleimani. In the end, Pete is expendable, too. Do you approve or disapprove of the U.S. attacks on Iran on Saturday? Something funny happened on the way to the 2024 election. It was broadly assumed that young voters would put the final nail in Trump's coffin, and lift up Democrats. Just like they had in 2020 and 2022. If Democrat David Shor's polling is right, Trump for sure won 18 year old White men and women in 2024. And he may have barely won 18 year old non-White men as well. The only group of 18 year olds Harris won were women of color, if Shor is right. This is of course horror to Democrats like Shor and me. And an existential threat to The Emerging Democratic Majority. Shor has a pretty KISS explanation for what went wrong. Inflation. High rent and mortgage rates. Gas prices. Food prices. Excessive lockdowns. It's not exactly a fact. But we know most incumbent parties across the globe that presided over COVID + inflation got their asses kicked. To me the telling exception was Mexico, where AMLO waged a war FOR the working class during COVID. And his successor, a Jewish woman in a supposedly macho Catholic culture, won in a landslide. She is still wildly popular today. And Mexicans disapprove of Trump more than any other nation in the world. So the verdict is out. But I think Trump is fucking his party over big time with young men. They wanted lower rent, affordable homes, and the ability to buy a big ass truck. They got war instead. That poll was taken just as the war started. But I think there is value in knowing what people's first gut reaction was. It does not surprise me that the younger the voter, the less likely they were to express support for starting a war of choice. The interesting question now is, what would turn this around and make young men support Trump or Vance more? Higher gas prices? A big stock market correction, so the one way they can increase their net worth suffers? A war-driven recession that, along with AI, will make finding a good paying job even harder? Boots on the ground? Maybe young men just want a war to go fight and die in. Or not. Everything Trump touches dies. Including his shot at a Republican majority he has never once won. In election after election young men are now turning strongly against him.

The debate will be about whether we needed to start a war with Iran. Most Americans simply don't believe we needed to. This is why Trumo keeps lying and saying we did not kill Iranian school girls, and we just had to re-obliterate the nukes we already obliterated. At least Maher is not a stupid bloodthirsty dog. He can make rational arguments. So in that sense Maher is doing some good. We for sure need a debate right now. What's also sad about this moment is that this is as good as it gets,. This is America's "Mission Accomplished" moment. Khamenei is dead. Just like when Saddam Hussein was killed. There is no reason to think it somehow gets better from here. Or that the majority of Americans who think this was the wrong decision will change their minds. I think those polls tell us everything we need to know. Unless you are a stupid dog. I'm guessing both Trump and the Iranian regime that will now try very hard to assassinate Trump, perhaps successfully, know how this works. I hope they leave Melania and Trump's kids alone. About half of Americans in that poll think this war will last months or years. The longer it goes on, the higher gas prices and inflation will get, and the less popular Trump's War of The Week will be. I am hoping Trump is at least smart enough to have that figured out.

That is the question. And here is a rant. We better all pray that some Democrat running for President can answer that question in 2028 in a way that 50.1 % or more of voters like. Assuming we get to 2028, with this reckless maniac Trump in control. I think the handwriting is on the wall that the reckless warmonger will get his ass kicked at the polls in 2026. And Democrats will do well just because they are not Republicans. The question is whether Democrats can do well because they are Democrats. That's on us, not Trump. Democrats Need to Face Why Trump Won That's a very long and data-filled (aka boring) interview from about a year ago I stumbled on last night and watched. David Shor is the wunderkind who ran afoul of some woke Democrats by saying things they didn't want to hear. I guess the good news is after Trump winning again many more Democrats are willing to look at who WE are. And why Trump looked better to so many Americans. The fact that you have two very smart and liberal college educated men, one of whom works for the New York Times, discussing this problem is actually part of the problem. Young men watching Tik Tok have no clue who Ezra Klein or David Shor are. And they could care less. They do care about inflation. And they do not want to die in a war. Many of them regret voting for Trump. That is a start. The single most stunning fact Shor has is that if everyone had voted in 2024, Trump would have won the popular vote by 5 % or so. Four years earlier, if everyone had voted, Biden would have won in 2020 by a bigger margin. So it was not about blind loyalty to Trump. It was about high prices, and endless wars, and feeling like the system is broken. In 2024 Trump won 18 year old men. He even won 18 year old men OF COLOR, Shor says. So it is hard to argue non-White young men wanted a racist President. Something else was going on. They were pissed, and they didn't like higher prices. They want good paying jobs and affordable rent or mortgages. And call me old. But it is a problem that they get their news from Tik Tok. Trump knew that and played to it. Selling a brand and being a carnival barker - and liar - is in his skill set. This is why I am watching Gavin Newsom and hoping he, among others, can figure it out. Newsom has a podcast. He invites Charlie Kirk and Scott Galloway on and tries to figure out: what are these guys saying to young men that they find appealing? How can Democrats speak to young men, so they don't line up behind JD Vance in 2028? That is a start, and a vert smart thing to do. Democrats and Independents who don't like Trump should be asking ourselves: who are we? What do we stand for that people care deeply about?
