I am with Telstra in Australia.
When I travel overseas I pay a $10 fee / day for their global roaming service.
This allows me to access everything I can in Australia, including YouTube, Facebook, etc in China.
I've been told that this possible because all internet traffic first goes through Sydney, whereas the hotel wifi goes through the local internet provider.

    I'm exactly the same.
Drinking was never an option for me, as my profession had strict rules regarding alcohol consumption. It wasn't completely banned, but you had to carefully time your last drink before you turned up for work, and if you had any trace of alcohol, you'd be fired. So it was easier to just not drink at all.
I don't care if other people drink; that's their business. Most of my friends love a drink, some more than others!
All my regular guys in Pattaya never touch alcohol, whereas my Bangkok guy used to have the odd whisky when he worked in the bar. Otherwise, it was soft drink.
I prefer my bed mates sober.

As a guy who was strictly a top, I thought the same thing.
I couldn't imagine a cock up my arse, either, but I was aware of the pleasure the bottoms got, so decided to try it.
I'm now kicking myself that I left it so long!

I always found juggling guys exhausting.
I solved the problem by searching for a guy I could spend all my time with on every holiday.
For me, it makes everything really easy. No more hopping from bar to bar every night trying to find a suitable guy - difficult I'd you are not a drinker-, sex on tap anytime, getting to know each other's preferences in bed and best of all, no surprises.
But a lot of punters enjoy the chase and are 'not committed to one grocery store'.
Oh, and fuck the chest - bring on the bulge!!!

I find this thread strangely interesting, like hearing about how straight guys get aroused by this or that part of a female's anatomy, haha. In other words, nothing of the above resonates with me, yet it is somehow intellectually fascinating.
I have never found any pleasure from being even tipsy, let along drunk - maybe it's just the control freak in me, wanting to retain full control of my senses at all times - and I'm no fan of alcohol. Yet, I am seeing here a desire to make oneself inebriated (at least partly) and to make the bar boys inebriated too; all the while counting the monetary costs.
I guess Bangkok is safe enough for such adventures, but over the years, I've heard of two misadventures from friends of friends. In both instances they were straight. The story from the guy who went to the Philippines (can't remember if it was Manila or Subic) was particularly dreadful. Apparently, or so he believed - I have to allow for the fact that he didn't really remember events well - he was pickpocketed while sitting with several women in a bar, and then when it was time to pay the tab, he was assaulted for having no money. After several hours, some toughies accompanied him back to his hotel and they ransacked his room to find more money.
Another story was from someone who went to Greece. Can't remember the details now but it too had something to do with being partially intoxicated amidst bargirls.
Over at the Latin American forum, we come across reports from time to time about friends of friends being robbed after a night out, and some of these reports admit that they had been drinking.
Sorry, if I sound like a wet blanket....

Well, he posted on social media to clear up any rumors....

Why I Left Silom Soi 4?
I didn't initially plan to make a public post about this, but given the amount of gossip, rumors, and direct messages I've been receiving, I feel it’s time to set the record straight regarding my departure from the venues in Silom Soi 4.
During the pandemic, while working in Thailand and running a back-office operation for my Australian software company, I stepped in to financially back some Thai friends. The goal was to help them take over two iconic locations that were at risk of closing. My intention was simple: provide the capital for them to run their own business downstairs, while I ran my separate software company upstairs.
I want to make one thing absolutely clear: I was strictly an investor and a shareholder. I was never the owner, director, or manager of these businesses. I had no control over the bank accounts, the accounting, or the hiring and firing of staff. My industry is software, not hospitality, and I made that boundary clear from day one.
While I provided the funding and tried to offer business guidance, the daily operations were entirely up to the Thai management. Unfortunately, internal infighting, severe accounting issues, and management disputes eventually made the situation unmanageable. When key managers resigned, the remaining staff were ill-equipped to run the business or get the finances in order for a potential sale.
Despite my best efforts to help them resolve these issues, my advice was repeatedly ignored. It became impossible to encourage the management to simply show up on time and take their own business seriously. I realized I was stuck trying to fix a conflict that was not of my doing.
Beyond the internal politics, the reality of the area is also changing. Much like the old Soi Twilight, it is highly likely that Soi 4 will face closure or major redevelopment soon. Operating businesses on strict, year-to-year leases with zero long-term security makes it a highly unstable environment. You never know if you will even have a lease the following year.
To answer the question people keep asking me—"Did you sell and how much did you make?"—the answer is no. They were not my businesses to sell. I wasn't a director, I had no right to control the final decisions, and my advice was no longer being heard.
I made the conscious decision to remove myself from an unmanageable situation. Unfortunately, I lost my entire investment in the process and received nothing back.
While I take pride in the financial support and mentorship I offered to help save those locations during a difficult time, that chapter is now completely finished and I have moved on with my life.

I don't think anybody in the industry is.
I remember when the talk was all about how Soi Twilight was about to close for redevelopment.
The bar owners all denied it and even erected a sign at the entrance claiming the Soi would be open for another 7 years.
It closed a few weeks after I had returned home!
Thais love to gossip - about us, each other, bars opening and closing, etc. I tend to take their 'information' with a grain of salt.
I'll believe it when I see it.

I spoke to Reader and he texted me this the other day:

Saphan Kwai indeed going strong as @macaroni21 says. I'm up there about five times weekly when I'm in town. Here's a capsule report:
It's about a 25-minute trip from Sala Deang (47 baht each way with change of train at Siam). Lots of ice candy both ways.
My most frequent stop is LoveBoy (formerly Phetboy) Massage. Large roster of Lao, Myanmar, Thai and occasional Vietnam guys.
Second favorite is 15M Masssage with somewhat smaller but well curated selection.
Third is Star Masssage with not dissimilar crew.
All of the above are no more than 5 minute walk from BTS stop. Loveboy and 15M shop fee is 400 for one-hour oil. Minimum tip is 1,000 baht with a handful a boy higher. Fee to the shop is 400 baht.
Star shop fee starts at 500 and escalates with type of room. Minimum tip also 1,000.
Loveboy is open 24/7 and other two I believe close at midnight.
It's been my experience that Loveboy and 15M are most likely to have guys hanging around shop during evening hours. Star not so much.
You can reserve guy you see on websites on same day without paying deposit.
Other shops I've visited include One Spa (15 minute walk), KMan Spa (5 minute walk), 27M, Home Spa and Phoenix (all about 25 minute walk). Shop fees range from 450-500) with minimum tips in1000 to 1200 range.
There's another small shop, BT House, about a 20 minute walk, on same road (Sutthisan).
I encourage visitors to sample the shops in Saphan Kwai.
And for the record, my favorite shop in Silom is Sun Massage on Silom soi 6.
    Hope that helps!
Thanks to Floridarob for passing it along.

My ex Cambodian guy wears one (not given by me). A plain gold ring like a male wedding band as you said, but on his middle finger. Cambodians love gold accessories as much as Thais do, though the obsession doesn’t run as deep since many can’t afford gold. Rings in Cambodia have the usual partnership and commitment implications as anywhere else, but they can also be given by a special older friend to a younger one. And while there can be some suggestion of romantic partnership it is not as symbolically specific as the Western giving of rings. In my guy’s case he was gifted the ring by an overseas older Cambodian sponsor who bought another ring for another boy at the same time.
Generally the baseline message is “there is someone in my life who loves and cares enough about me to buy me an expensive ring” and also a bit of a flex that you are wearing the equivalent of 10-15000 baht on your finger, when everyone is on minimum wage. And a suggestion that you are “spoken for” but not necessarily as I know as my guy continues to wear his ring even after he and his sponsor parted ways. As does a Cambodian girl i know who still wears a diamond-looking ring from a past engagement.
TLDR looks nice, is a flex
one important thing to note @jimmie50 is that Cam’s wearing of a ring reflects well on you as it does him in front of friends and family

AI images of anything - but especially guys - are a total turn-off for me.
It's the real thing or nothing!
Speaking of short guys, they are normally not my choice, as the assumption is that they have small appendages.
Years ago I invited a small guy in Dreamboys to come and sit with me. He had flashed me a gorgeous smile from the stage, was super cute and his bulge seemed impressive.
As he sat down I noticed the outline of his cock. It reminded me of a python! It actually reached over and rested on his thigh!
Back in the room he undressed to take a shower. Omg! 😮 😮 This guy is all cock!
I presumed he was a show-er, not a grow-er, but as he came out of the shower, I could see he was definitely both. It was my first ever 10 incher!
He was top only, as was I at the time. I wouldn't have dared to bottom for him, even if I could. But as a size queen I had the most wonderful time playing with it.
After an hour or so of suck and 'chuck' he finally sat on my stomach and came all over my face and sheets.
We lay there, chatting for a while. He then stood beside the bed, still hard as a rock, and did a few poses. We both laughed at how disproportionate he looked - a 10 incher on a guy barely 5 foot 5 inches tall.
What do they say? Never judge a book.....

So many things to report about…where to begin.  First of all, today is Cam’s birthday.  Birthday boy turned 29 today.  Fast approaching the big 30. lol.  I tease him a little and tell him once he hits 30 it is all downhill from there.  He always claims that birthdays and anniversaries are no big deal in his family and nothing is really done to celebrate.  Either he wasn’t being completely honest about that, or his family made an exception this year because all of his siblings sent him birthday messages, and we even did video chat with his parents and the youngest sister.  He also heard from a couple of his childhood friends.  I knew his birthday was coming up and have repeatedly asked if there was anything he would like, want or need…always adding the phrase within reason.  Of course, his idea of within reason and mine could be very far apart.  I knew I was potentially opening a can of worms with that one.  His reply was always that he didn’t want anything…or his standard response of ‘I don’t know’.  For several days now I have been telling him to be thinking about it because after we finished the temple tours today and returned to the Airbnb we would go shopping.  Last evening he actually showed me photos of several items he was interested in…he had obviously been thinking about this and done some research.  Surprising to me, though, all of the items were pieces of jewelry.  This kind of threw me a curve ball, because I have never seen him wear any type of jewelry before.  Not prayer beads, not any type of necklace or chain, he doesn’t eve wear a watch.  I know he has this piece of wood he keeps in a velvet type bag that one day he hopes to have carved into a Buddhist symbol to wear around his neck.  It is a special type of wood found in Cambodia that has special significance in the Buddhist faith.  He has showed that to me before.  To make a long story short, we went to several different shops in the central market that sell jewelry.  We had passed by this place yesterday. I am always skeptical of these places and have always doubted both the quality and the authenticity of their jewelry.  Not a place I would go to buy such an item, but seems to be very common place in Asian countries.  Saw many similar places in Taiwan and Thailand.  After looking at several items, Cam selected a ring…not just any ring, though, but what I would consider to be a wedding band.  This would be the case in the US, at least, but not sure about Cambodia.  No idea if men wear wedding bands, and no idea if there is any special significance in Cam’s mind.  I did comment to him when we were looking at the rings that they are just like male wedding bands in the US.  And we did not purchase matching bands.  That was not suggested by either of us to the other…not that I wouldn’t be open to that.  This entire process just caught me completely off guard.  So, I ended up spending $316 USD…initially I was prepared to spend around $200 on his gift, so I didn’t really mind going a little over.  He doesn’t ask for any money, nor has his family.  The first time he ever asked was to see if I wanted to participate in the family gift to his parents.  It was about including me versus expecting me to contribute.  We will go out somewhere for a nice dinner this evening.  Would appreciate any comments or thoughts you wise forum members have regarding the ring purchase.  Still unsure what to think about it.
While doing video chat with his parents and sister, it was decided (not that a vote was taken that included me…lol) that his parents will travel to Battambang with us on Tuesday or Wednesday to visit relatives.  As I said previously, I am learning to just go with the flow.  Plans are constantly changing…if there are even plans made in advance…especially when family gets involved.  I guess a big lunch is being planned for tomorrow when we arrive.  I had told Cam we should buy food already prepared so his mother isn’t cooking for everyone, but that idea was quickly shot down.  Evidently his mother has already started preparing…with the help of his youngest sister.  That is why she was there on the video chat.  No idea if the parents will stay with the relatives, or are planning on staying with us in the Airbnb.  I doubt I will find out in advance.  The Airbnb is only one bedroom, so this could be very interesting if they are staying with us.  Parents may be in the bedroom while me and Cam are on the floor.
Visited three temples today…very remote and travel time between them was quite long.  Very isolated and rural areas we have not been to before today.  Cam had no idea where he was.  Temples today were a lot smaller than some of the previous ones, so they were not crowded and not as much walking.  No climbing involved, either.  I cannot say much for the quality of the roads getting there, though.  We passed two different work crews out filling potholes after all of the torrential rains.  It was interesting to watch, as they basically had a small pick up filled with gravel.  There were four or five workers.  One was the driver, two had baskets shaped like the head of a shovel they would use to scoop the gravel out of the back of the truck and place it into the pothole.  The other two had some sort of device they would tamp the gravel down.  No tar, no asphalt, no rollers…everything done by hand, basically.  Passed by many roadside stands selling some sort of cake I would like to go back and try…steamed, I believe, with some type of cream inside.  Also saw lots of pork being roasted…also want to try that.  Unfortunately, there is no time now to go back on our own.  Cam said we can find similar things in his hometown.  I do need to ‘take back’ something I said in an earlier post that the sales people are not that aggressive.  That was true in the market areas of Siem Reap, but not so much at the stalls located at many of the temples.  The vendors at the temples were quite pushy indeed…so much so I was tempted to have a t-shirt made that said ‘no money’ in Khmer hoping that would fend them off.  lol.  This seems to me a contradiction of the Code of Conduct posted at all of the temple sites we visited to have these shopping stalls on the site as well.  Most had several stalls, but they all have the same exact merchandise for sale.
Probably my last post until we get to Battambang.

    Great report @Thefiloboy

I am currently in Egypt, and have just finished three lovely days in Cairo, so I hope it’s ok that I add my observations here instead of starting a new thread. My other destination in Egypt is the Siwa Oasis and with a population of just 25K, I don’t expect much to happen here in terms of gaying around.
Due to a delay, I arrived in Cairo well after midnight. Getting an Uber from the airport is easy and cheap so save yourself the hassle of haggling with any of the drivers that will approach you as you wait at the luggage belt and exit the terminal.
Based on previous posts here about Cairo, I had chosen to book the Marriott in Zamalek as it seems members have found it easy to have guests. I also received a helpful message from a forum member suggesting it could be quite cruisy at the hotel. I had no problems having guests and I actually did score a cruising related hook-up.
Grindr lit up as a Christmas tree as soon as I opened the app. I think as a foreigner I had several things working in my favor. Facepic and distance and to a lesser extent age visible on your settings set you out from most of the other profiles. But in particular, it is the probability that you may host that makes you popular with the local talent.
I received a lot of expiring pics of mostly cocks, bodies and sometimes faces, and it was a bit of a challenge keeping track of so many messages. My solution was to not engage with more than two or three at a time and delete messages or block profiles that I was not interested in pursuing and to only open the app when I had time to engage.
My efforts resulted in 4 hook ups. First was a late twenties semi-chubby young professional. We met for a bite to eat before getting an Uber back to the Marriott. He instructed me what to say in case his presence was questioned by security, but no-one batted an eye lid. Nice sex and pleasant pillow talk.
Second was a late thirties or early forties slim guy who, as it turned out, had actually come all the way from somewhere half way between Alexandria and Cairo just to see me. Before he came and before I knew how far he had come, I had declined his proposal of him spending the whole night, but I still felt a little bad sending him on his way in the middle of the night. The sex was not very interesting to me, neither was the conversation. I met him outside the main gate and he walked in with me.
Third was an early thirties guy who had a business somewhere in the neighborhood and was familiar enough with the Marriott to suggest we meet inside the hotel in the Garden Promenade Cafe. I think that is the least conspicuous way of meeting someone at the Marriott but guys unfamiliar with the place or 5 star hotels in general will probably prefer to walk in with you. Sex and conversation were both good.
Fourth was an early twenties slim guy. I was a little worried that someone so young would seem out of place to security, but again no issues. I met him outside the main gate. He didn’t speak much English, but the sex was very passionate. He was definitely the most memorable experience of the four.
The Marriott has two gates, so if you feel embarrassed walking in with a guy more than once a day, you can switch between gates, but really no one seems to mind. It seems the hotel exists outside the norms that govern Egyptian society. Besides my own escapades, I helped a couple of working ladies in the elevator accessing their desired floor with my key card and I also noticed a similar lady in the Lobby trying to make eye contact with me as I was killing time after check out.
Speaking of killing time after check out. That is when the successful cruising hook up took place. After spending time at the pool I used the spa facilities to freshen up. There is a jacuzzi, a sauna and a steam room besides the showers and the gym. I met a muscular guy a few years older than me. He looked at me and chatted with me, so I was pretty sure something would transpire if I followed him into the steam room. So that's what I did and we had some side fun.
None of the hook ups were transactional. I did ask the youngest if he needed money for a taxi, but he declined. They were all tops as were probably 9 out of ten of guys I communicated with on Grindr.
I may have a little extra to report from Cairo when I return there after Siwa.
Btw, hook ups or no hook ups, the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum are well worth a visit and I have also enjoyed the city in general.

I remember seeing people ask about Cairo here, and i’ve finally experienced it for the first time last week. So i thought i’d share my own experience.
For context, i was there for a few days (Saturday night until Wednesday morning) for work. I only had a few nights to explore outside of my scheduled meetings.
I saw somewhere a recommendation of a hammam where some guys were offered hand jobs or more. Since this place was only 20 minutes from my hotel, I went there twice (it also helps that massages are quite cheap in Cairo).
Wary that this is a sensitive topic in Egypt, i’m not going to post here the name of the place, but feel free to DM me if you are visiting soon.
The first time (Sunday night), i was assigned a hot masseur (bald but with facial hair, which i loved, and he looked super masculine), he was wearing a tshirt but i could tell he had a toned bidy, but not that tall (maybe 164cm). He massaged me quite well, and gave special attention to my glutes. I knew he was onto something because he would always ask, ‘Good massage??’ whenever he’d glide his hands through my butt crack. And every time, i’d let out a moan-ish ‘Yeah…’ so he knows i’m also up for it lol. When it was time to turn around, i noticed he kept looking at the print of my hard dick under the towel. When he would massage my upper thighs, he would lift the towel a bit more and glance at it, and would find a way for his arms (not his hands) to very teasingly brush against it. He moved above my head and started massaging my torso and, to my surprise, played with my nipples! At this point i had been giving soft moans to signal i was enjoying and that was more than willing to go wherr he wanted to take the massage lol. It was at this moment, when i was sooo turned on and bricked up, that he said ‘Give me good tip?’, to which i replied ‘For sure!’. He then reached for my dick (which was at this point already had so much pre cum lol), and jerked me off. He moved to my side to get closer to my dick, and jerked my off with one hand while the other played with my nipple. I kept looking at him and was letting out moans, but he took my hand and put it on my dick, kind of telling me to jerk off myself. I didn’t mind since i’m into nipple play and both his hands were playing with my nipples, while i jerked myself off until i came. He then made me take a shower in the en suite bathroom. I gave him a 400EGP tip in the end, and seemed happy to receive it. In total (including that tip), i spent 1200EGP which is like 20€ (talk about bang for your buck!).
The next night (Monday), i went to the same place and tried also getting a Turkish bath to see if there was anything happening in that area. Long story short — nothing happened. But still, it was quite hot to see locals in the steam bath, sauna, and pool. Some of them chatted me up, but i don’t think that kind of thing happens in that place. A twinky guy (who looked 17yo 😭) bathed me and scrubbed me down, but again, nothing happened.
When it was time for my massage, i was led to the massage rooms where a super hot and manly guy was waiting for me. I got super excited because he was very buff, tall, and handsome. Dark skinned, with nice face, and a very nice chunky body. He looked young, too. Unfortunately, though, while the massage was great, he did not show any signs that he wanted to offer a happy ending. I asked him in the end if he wanted a nice tip, but he said ‘Anything you give is enough.’ I tried to push a bit more by fixing my dick under the towel, but he would just look at me and said ‘I hope to see you again, Sir.’ I didn’t push it any further, and just thought the quality of the massage was still worth it. I gave him a 200EGP tip and he seemed happy too.
Also, funnily, i met the owner while waiting for my uber (lol) outside.
On my last night (Tuesday), i had contemplated if i wanted to go for a third time (in a row lol), but in the afternoon, a super hot 27yo athletic local hit me up on Grindr and wanted to meet at night. We ended up spending more than 3 hours together, so i wasn’t able to go anymore. Let me know if you want a rundown of what happened there.
Overall, despite pretty harsh laws and horror stories online, i still found my fair share of gay fun in Cairo. Everything is quite cheap, and the men are just hot. 100% would recommend and would come back.

Yes, I obsessed over a guy.  I had some life challenges growing up in the 1950s/60s.  My Dad died when I’d just turned 5.  My Mother, a single parent, worked 1 or 2 jobs daily, depending on day of the week; 6 days a week. We were ‘latch key kids’. I didn’t understand what was happening to me sexually. I was attracted to guys when I was pre-teen, and, more so, kids/guys my own age were coming on to me with some regularity.  It was all so confusing.
By graduation end, I’d attended 4 different high schools; city and suburban.  We moved around a lot.  Evictions were the norm.  In elementary school alone, we lived in 5 or 6 different apartments.  The second of four high schools I attended was situated in an upper-middle-class suburban Chicago community (we were from the ‘other side of the tracks’).
One of my classmates at the second high school was CJ, whose father owned multiple sod farms in the area; a wealthy family.  CJ was physically stunning.  The kind of guy that caused me to spring a hard-on the moment I saw him. He was on the freshman swim team.  Lithe, smooth body who seemed to always sport a hard on – in speedo or out.  I was so infatuated with the vision of CJ of him I'd seen in the shower room I’d telephone his house after school just to hear his voice picking up the phone; then I’d quickly hang up.  Scores of telephone calls.  At night, I’d masturbate to the thought of him. As I write this, I can envision him in my mind.
We moved to a different community at the end of my freshman year, to the third high school.  The calls stopped, and my fascinations were redirected! Oh, that's another story.

    Day 1 Arrival
It was very easy to get through immigration. We arrived around 1 PM. We did have access to the priority line. We got through and out with our bags within about 20 minutes. I used my EU passport so that I could get a stamp in that for future use with the E Gates.
We worked our way out to the Grab area and waited another 15 minutes for our car. There wasn’t that much traffic going into Bangkok and we got to Quarter Silom without any problems.
I went to Senso. I was treated by Tong. He was thinner than my ideal pick but he ended up being a really good choice. He does have a massage certificate. He also managed to keep the full 90 minutes very interesting. when I came downstairs, there were at least two guys there were much more my type. I don’t regret Tong, but if they were there, when I first came in, I probably would have picked one of them.
In the evening got another massage. I’m right next the Prime so I got a scrub and massage. I don’t remember his name. He did use rubber scrubbing gloves during this scrub and it was probably the best scrub I’ve ever had. I’m more used to Korean style, and this was combination of the enzyme scrub as well as using the actual gloves so really enjoyable and quite adventurous in scrubbing me fully exposed with me erect. I sort of thought it was deliberate on his part.
Later at one point on my back during the massage portion and my erection was falling in the way of where he was working on my left thigh. He kept moving it. I got the impression that he might be getting a little annoyed So I held it out of the way myself for him. Ha ha ha. In retrospect, I may have been better off letting him deal with it
It’s rainy season and it is hot and humid with rain off and on.

Didn’t post anything yesterday.  We had a full day of temple tours and I was exhausted by the time we got back to the Airbnb.  Six temples in one day was just a bit too much for me.  @vinapu is correct that the 7 day pass does not need to be within 7 consecutive days or even within one week.  You have 30 days in which to use the pass.  However, we have the time constraint of going back to his hometown for Pchum Ben and then on to Battambang after the holiday.  Not sure if we will return to Siem Reap before my departure date. I thought I was in reasonably decent shape for a 75 year old.  I go to exercise class at the senior center where I live and also walk regularly on the days there is no class.  However, there is way more walking and climbing than I anticipated with these temples.  There are so many layers to the temples and they go on forever.  After number six, I told Cam that I was finished for the day.  No more temples.  I was ‘templed out’.  lol.
We were both tired last night and neither one of us felt like cooking.  We went to the Space restaurant/bar in Pub Street area.  It was a Monday evening, which traditionally in the US is the slowest day of the week for restaurants.  Everyone goes out over the weekend, so nobody goes out Mondays.  This was around 7:30pm and the ground floor was completely empty.  We requested a table upstairs since they had live music and we thought there might be a few more people.  We were the only customers on the top floor.  After we had placed our order and were waiting on our food, two older caucasian gentlemen came in, followed by a party of four Asians (two couples).  This is a huge restaurant, so this was very surprising to me…even though it is the end of low season and also still raining.
We have one more tour scheduled tomorrow and then will leave Thursday morning for his parents.  The plan is to stay there through the holiday and head to Battambang probably sometime Tuesday.  Not holding my breath, as things are always subject to change…especially when family gets involved.  The plan didn’t even form until he spoke with two of his sisters at some point yesterday.  Trying to coordinate such a large family gets complicated.  Speaking of Pchum Ben, we collectively contributed $400 USD to the money pool for his parents.  $250 was from Cam and $150 was from me.  That way I wasn’t this crazy American coming in and flashing around a lot of cash outdoing the other family members.  I think it allows everyone to ‘save face’ as the expression goes.  This afternoon we will go shopping at Angkor Supermarket for some toys to give the nieces and nephews.  Cam didn’t like the idea of giving money to the children.
I am surprised there are not many chain restaurants in Siem Reap, especially with so many tourists passing through this area.  I have seen one Burger King, one KFC, one Dairy Queen and two Starbucks.  There seems to be many places called Pasta Corner, but I am not familiar with that chain.  Perhaps Phnom Penh has more of a selection.  We have tried both of the Starbucks for an iced drink, and the one near Pub Street is noticeably different (in a good way) with service and quality of drinks.  Cam and I both agreed on that and both noticed the difference.  The other location is in Heritage Walk Mall, as previously reported.  I try very hard not to compare Cambodia to Thailand or Siem Reap to Bangkok.  It is interesting to me that Cam does not think very highly of Thailand or Thai people in general.  Yet, he has traveled there to work in numerous jobs with other family members and alone at times since he was 18.  He would always make comments when we were together in Thailand about how they always copy everything from Cambodia.  Nothing is original.  As a result, I try very hard not to make comments where I am comparing something between the two cities or the two countries.  On the flip side, he doesn’t mind me making comparisons to things I am accustomed to in America versus here.  Just one of those quirky things I have learned to work around.
Visa update…passport arrived back in Siem Reap yesterday and we picked it up today.  Not a huge problem, but unfortunately they only approved the six month ER visa rather than one year.  That will suffice for my return trip in February/March, but I will need to apply for the one year extension at that time with a new US passport.  While my current US passport has approximately one year left before it expires, if they gave me the one year visa now the passport would expire before the visa would expire.  Department of General Immigration said I needed to apply for the new US passport once I return home and then submit the application for one year ER visa with the new passport when I return in early 2027.  Surprisingly, that makes sense. Otherwise, the entire process was easy and painless.  The visa service I used, Cam Smile Visa Service, was highly recommended by the Expat group on Facebook as well as several travel sites and Youtube videos.  I will definitely use them again when I return in February/March.  They are well respected and can be trusted with your documents.  They are also very cheap.  I originally paid $293…which is $290 to the government for the visa extension and just $3 to Cam Smile.  They gave me a refund since I only received the six month ER visa, so it ended up costing me just $163…again, $160 to Immigration and $3 to Cam Smile.  Address is: Taphul Road, Group 11, Svaydangkum District, Siem Reap City, Cambodia.  Phone is: +855 99 313 093 Email is: camsmile168@gmail.com.  They have a Facebook page but no website.  They use WhatsApp and Telegram for communication.  Telegram seems to be more popular in Cambodia than Line.  Anyway…5 stars from my experience.
