Hi. I’ve been in Bogota for 4 days with 2 more days here before heading to Medellin.
a few thoughts as it’s my first time here:
Museums: Museos del Banco de la República is a charming and beautiful little museum. It wasn’t too crowded. I appreciate Botero, he’s never been at the tops of who I love, but the pieces and sculpture they had were top notch and the layout and curation was excellent. Better than expected. Also, it was pretty cruisy. I chatted in my shitty Spanish with two guys visiting from Cartagena, a couple, they invited me over but I had lunch reservation. We traded numbers, but didn’t meet up. They left today. Que lastima b/c they were sexy. A couple other guys made some eyes also. Museo del Oro was another surprise. I’m much more of an art museum fan than history or artifacts. But it was well laid out. Super informational and interesting and the lighting was so good.
Food: I did the fancy stuff. Leo and El Chato which are yeh two highest rated Colombian restaunts at #54 and #72 on the 100 best restaurants of the world list. They were fine. I’ll chalk it up to I’m not the biggest fan of Colombian food in general 😳.  Harry Sasson was a standout tho. It’s an OG of the dining scene I’m told and it’s worth going for the beautiful room and the tortilla española and heart of palm salad alone. It’s very old Colombia… waiters in jackets, white tablecloths, excellent service, beautiful traditional room. But it wasn’t fussy. The other standout was La Puerta Falsa Restaurant. It’s tiny, 200+ years old and worth the hype. Yes it’s in all the guidebooks and yes you have to wait in line but the anjiaco and hot chocolate were soooooo good. I wanted a tamal too so I ordered one but it was way too much food. I couldn’t finish it and felt really guilty like a wasteful gringo. Just know that portions are huge if you go.
Shopping: there has been one store that blew me away, it’s called St Dom. It only carries high end Colombian designers and they are both cutting edge and really high quality. I was super impressed. My experience with Colombian design is the quality is a little missing and the design is pretty basic. St Dom changed my mind. It’s in a beautiful space. The staff are helpful, flirty and charming. One guy who was managing particularly so. I said I’d go back and he gave his number. He had a great personality that won me over so that’ll happen (maybe tonight!)
Guys: I’m not an apps guy. I’m now in my 40s and idea of staying out for Teatron isn’t my thing anymore. But I have followed you all and the tips. Met a guy at the gym who was really hot. And got a 4 hands from two twinks from here. We are 250 Colombian Pesos clearly on whatsapp. I even asked him in whatsapp 250.000 Colombian Pesos and he agreed.
Once he arrived he started giving me a massage. He then said that his partner is downstairs and if it’s OK to bring him to, he’ll only charge 100000 Colombian Pesos. To which I agreed.

They did end up leaving and I noticed they stole my perfume which I’m not sad about because it was a cheap perfume anyways. 
 
Now I know you guys will say that there were red flags  to begin with, and I should’ve noticed that, but this topic is for learning purposes and I hope none of us get into trouble like this.
Now I’m honestly so reluctant to hire anyone from milerotico.

This post is not meant to scare anyone or discourage you from visiting Colombia. But it is a reminder that Colombia is still a third world country. With great people, and a few bad apples. You should take certain precautions when visiting Colombia.
I still think Colombia is a great country, with friendly people, beautiful nature and handsome men, but you should never let your guard down. TinT, this is not Thailand.
A few months ago I was visiting Medellin. On Wednesday night I was having drinks at the Chiquita bar in Parque Lleras with a paisa friend. I met an American gentleman, let’s call him James (not his real name). James is a solo traveler in his late forties. It was his first trip to Colombia. He was accompanied by a handsome Colombian hunk he picked up on Grindr. We started talking, mostly in English, since James only spoke a few words of Spanish. Later that night we went to a nearby nightclub called Premium. At the end of the party we exchanged WhatsApp. It is customary (at least among my paisa and veneco friends) to create a WhatsApp group and everyone sends a message when they get home safely. Everyone got home safely, a normal night in Medellin.
I had no contact with James for the next days. Fast forward to the following Monday. Early in the morning I received a phone call. James. He sounded in distress. English is not my native language and it was difficult to understand what he was saying. Since he stayed only a few blocks from my house in Laureles, I told him I would meet him at his place. When I arrived, I could tell right away that he was not doing well. His face was swollen, he had a black eye, and he looked completely miserable.
This is what he told me about what happened: 
On Saturday around noon, he was contacted on Grindr by a guy named Alejandro. It was a empty new profile, but Alejandro shared his details and photos in a private chat. Alejandro was a 28-year-old handsome university student. He said he was into older men, but that he also needed some money to pay the rent. They moved the conversation to WhatsApp, discussed the price and agreed to meet at a shopping mall that same day at 6pm. He went to the mall and they had a drink at one of the bars. He had a good feeling about the guy. He looked exactly like in the photos, he even wore the same clothes. He was polite, smiled a lot and seemed at ease. This whole conversation was done via google translate. He did mention that he didn’t have a cedula (identity card) and asked if that was a problem. He had lost it the day before, but he had some paper that was supposed to prove his identity. James didn't make a big deal about it because it was obvious that he wasn't underage. James called an Uber and they drove to his airBnB. His airBnB didn’t have security, which James wanted for privacy. During the ride to the airBnB, Alejandro was nervous and texting on his phone.
Once at the Airbnb, they chatted and had a beer. Alejandro still seemed very nervous and kept texting. He said a friend was writing to him about something that happened at the university. James didn't think much of it and went to the bathroom. That was the last time he saw Alejandro.
When he came back from the bathroom, Alejandro was gone and there were two rough guys with guns pointed at him. They beat him up, gave him drugs and made him give them everything. His money, his phone, his credit and debit cards. He obeyed. He gave them everything hoping they would leave. They didn’t. Instead, they put him in a car and drove him to a location in a neighbourhood called "12 de Octubre" (this was reconstructed from his Google timeline). Once at that location, more guys arrived, beat him up even worse, threatened to cut off his dick and fingers if he didn’t tell the truth. It was a complete nightmare. He had to give them the codes to his cards. He had to show them everything he had on his phone, including his banking apps. The kidnappers were snorting drugs the whole time and were very tense. For at least the next 24 hours, the kidnappers plundered his bank account and credit cards, withdrawing cash and buying expensive items. They forced him to take more drugs, and his memories of that day are blurry.
He woke up, lying on the sidewalk in a street in the Robledo neighbourhood, with his passport and Airbnb keys in his pocket. He had no idea how long he had been lying there. Still dizzy and confused, he took a taxi to the Airbnb. Once inside the Airbnb, he remembered that he had hidden his laptop in the oven (since there was no safe) and forgot to tell the kidnappers. He had WhatsApp on the laptop and contacted the only English-speaking person he knew in Medellin, who happened to be me.
When I arrived, he didn’t want to go to the hospital. We checked his banking apps on the computer (and blocked his cards) and when he saw what had happened to his savings, he was devastated. I didn’t feel confident enough in Spanish to explain his story to the police, so I contacted a bilingual friend and the three of us went to the police to file a report. To be honest, the police were cooperative and compassionate. We filed a ‘denuncia’ and gave them as much information as we could. I thought it was strange that they gave his passport back, but according to the police, it’s a well-known tactic: the kidnappers hope that the victim will be ashamed and/or terrified and leave the country as soon as possible without reporting it. The police also told me that this is not specifically aimed at the LGBT community, but that it happens on all dating apps. 
For obvious reasons, James didn’t want to stay at that airBnB any longer. I loaned him some money to buy a phone and pay for his hotel and living expenses (which he later paid back in full). We saw each other regularly over the next few days. He was still in shock and wouldn’t leave his hotel room. I eventually accompanied him to the airport to catch his flight home.
James was able to get some of the money back, but he lost thousands of dollars (he asked me not to reveal the full amount). He is now feeling better, although he is still in therapy to recover from PTSD. He hasn't heard anything from the Colombian police yet.

Just come back from a trip from Mexico City so I thought I'd give an update.
Arriving at the airport there are self service passport checks at the border. As you come into arrivals - turn right and you'll find the official taxi payment processors DO NOT go outside and get your own taxi. It's about 300 pesos to the city.  I stayed at the Sheraton for 9 nights. I had no problems bringing guests back. This is a decent hotel and I was upgraded from a Corner Suite to a Malmaison Penthouse Suite.
 
Bars are relatively conservative I went to the following:
In the gay area:
Blow Bar - 150 pesos cover charge. This is 70% women to 30% men. GoGos are hot but they keep their shorts on the whole time. The women here tend to be a bit screetchy and scream when the guys dance.
Marikoteca - Unsure of the cover charge because it was 250 pesos on NYE. This used to be kinky bar - 50% to 50% men and women. The women here are different, chill, don't scream etc. Again GoGos are hot but stay in shorts. Drag show is maximum effort - one bitch was waltzing round in a ball gown.
Workshop/ El Taller - 100 pesos cover charge. Drag show; no GoGos but the staff are really the nicest in the city. Chilled out.
Macho and King/ Papi Fun bar* - No cover charge, no menus and no show; these are scam bars. Do not go to them. You will pay prices similar to Los Angeles.
Sauna Olympio* - 250 cover charge, decent enough gay sauna and bathhouse.
Outside the gay area:
Tom's Leather Bar - 250 pesos cover charge inc. five drinks. Guys dance with hard ons in the two bar areas. They do this every half hour from 10:30 for 15 minutes. The crowd and the staff are good fun here. Worth the Uber with one caveat - I'm a smoker when on a night out so I didn't mind but the guys here smoke in the main bar which wouldn't be ideal for someone with respiratory problems.
Near the historic center:
Funny Love Cabinas - 100 pesos cover charge inc. one drink. This is cabins in a sex shop. You go in and take the elevator to the 2nd floor. The guys stand around the Cabins. There is a show here (full sex) but they don't give out the details. It just happens.
Sexto Piso - 150 pesos cover charge. Most difficult place to find. In the same street as Funny Love you go into a building and it's on the 6th floor. Staff very nice. Cruise club with light room and dark room. Guys fucking all over.
Cine Savoy - 60 pesos entry. Old fashion sex cinema. Anyone can get it here. It's packed with about 100 men.
Things to be aware of:
Gringo prices - You will pay gringo prices in a load of bars. I've put * next to the ones I paid extra in. This can be anywhere from an extra 100 pesos in the sauna to an extra 100$ in Macho and King bars. If they won't give you a price list, just walk out. HOWEVER, if you chose to be taken to a table by a waiter and they run around after you and look after you all night expect to pay about 20% for drinks. I didn't mind at all because I took it as a service charge but if you're on a tight budget go to the bar yourself.
Uber - Uber is 99% safe however, do not come off the main drag or the busy areas to make it easier for your driver. This leaves you vulnerable. The concierge told me that occasionally an Uber driver accepts and if the area is remote, they send friend to rob the gringo waiting for them.
The metro - If you want to get flashed at, or see someone suck off a random guy - use the last carriage of the metro from Cuauhtémoc to Hidalgo.
The street scene - Not my thing but there are a few guys who look too vulnerable to me but they offer sex for less than 10$. These are not in much evidence but they are occasionally available and always on Hamburgo Street between C.Ambrese and C.Varsovia.
Closed bars - old favourites BoyBar and BotasBar are perminantly closed. 
Honestly - I'll be back to Rio for my next adventure. CDMX isn't a lovely place but fun. 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Quick update 3 Jan 2025. Went with a friend tonight and they were closed up tight, despite there being the usual advertised programming for Friday, Dunno, they did announce that they would be closed Dec 24 and 31 — both typically busy club nights. And the WhatsApp number is no longer listed. Stay tuned.

@Riobard is absolutely correct. The leaf is marijuana and the parrot ("perico") is a slang term for coke. The parrot or lomo emoji is commonly used in Colombia instead of the snowflake. You willalso  see people it the large nightclubs with a parrot on one shoulder --I will give you three guesses as to what they are selling.

I think I walked from Teatron to my cheap hotel in Chapinero, but I'm like that. Chapinero seems pretty quiet and safe. Parts north of Chapinero get ever more affluent and chic, so you should be okay.
There are some excellent Michelin-style froo-froo restaurants that would be $300 a person in the US but less than half the price in Colombia. Leo is very well-regarded. But other than these bargain high-end restaurants (whose chefs and staff trained and worked in Europe), my favorite Colombian eateries are the chicharron chains. You get a cup of deep-fried tasty, salty pig pieces with a twist of lime and a beer. Life can't get any better than that!.
Aand the folks on this board can't possibly be worried about the dietary effects of what they put in their mouth.

I have never had an issue with a yellow cab in Bogotá, but I have heard stories about other's experiences. Since this will be your first trip, I would suggest you rely on Uber -- they are reliable and cheap in the capitol and you have the added security of their tracking system. The taxis at the airport are also dependable and cheap, a trip to central Bogotá during the day should be around 40.000COP, even cheaper early in the day.

This coming Friday, Premier is advertising a men's only "BIG HUNK" event. Do you know if its any different than the blackout events - or is it just a superficial name change? I have a proclivity for twinks so the "hunk" moniker makes me wary.
