So sorry to hear this happened to you. I know the stats are high for someone that visits so much but it still sucks and I hope you are OK soon! I was robbed in Sao Paulo 2 times many years back at ATM's. The hotel told me not to go there alone. I did and paid for it. I was robbed once in Rio by police when coming to hotel from Samba Gay about 4AM and they told part of my money in my wallet when they could find no drugs in the hotel car. Shit happens and I got over it very fast and have returned many times since. But, I am a bit more careful where I go and what I do every time.

If it is just for one trip, use your ATM from your home country and get cash out. I'd take 30k baht which is less than 1K. That will last days. If you are going over and over, open a Thai bank account and transfer money there. It is easy to do and cheap. It doesn't pay high interest but worth it. I have always used ATM with no issues there.

Thanks guys. I'll have to think about it but I don't see safety issues as I am slow and careful but you are right that motorcycles do make a difference. Years back there was talk of changing the location of the steering wheel in Thailand and the side of the road. I guess nothing will ever come of this.

Lets calm down. I have been to both places. I enjoy both. But, I also understand the police situation. I was stopped one year at Carnival by the police and money was stolen from me in Rio. Yes, Rio. I have been in Thailand WHEN raids happen and not once ever asked for ID or anything and just left the place and went to another bar. Shit happens and you either get over it and move on or you live in fear. I prefer to continue traveling to both places and enjoying life. The last several posts in this thread are a bit too aggressive for me. I like an aggressive guy in bed but not in the forums. Relax.

I think corruption is abound everywhere including in the USA. So, don't avoid Thailand based on that. The bars on Soi Twilight have nude shows which are totally illegal in Thailand. The crack downs often occur because someone forgot to pay or didn't pay. These things happen and often it is just the police need some good press and then things return back to normal. I have seen the raids happen in Bangkok and Pattaya and they come and they go but they never harass foreigners. They are there to get the boys and fine the establishments. If boys have drugs in their system, they pay or go to jail.. It is that simple. Without the drugs, most of this would be avoided. But, in every gay community I have been in, drugs are rampant including New York and LA. But, there they don't pee test workers. They have to catch you in the act. In Thailand, a pee test is proof of drugs and thus illegal and thus arrests are made. Often the bars know the police are coming and dress down, stop the nudity and clear out all the illegal workers from Cambodia, Laos, etc. When things die down, they all return. I have seen this a lot. Now, this new government is more conservative than the last and it would not surprise me if things change a bit there. But, I don't see any drastic changes coming.

I have an old and very sentimental automobile in the USA and I was thinking of bringing it over to Thailand when I retire there. As the steering wheel is on the wrong side for Thailand, are there any legal issues or other issues in importing the vehicle?

Maybe. But, I think this project may have lots of implications to Thailand as for me, when I get one, I'll be using it to call the Thai boyfriend for free instead of using Skype. To me, saving money to call LOS is relevant to things about Thailand and why I started it here instead of the beer bar. I don't call too many other countries but I would love a phone which I don't need to shut off when I go to Thailand as the data roaming on this phone package works in Thailand at the same rate as the data rates in the USA. To me, this is a big step for those of us that are from USA and travel to Thailand.

I do wonder how this will affect data and plans around the world. They are saying that calls will be based on data used and that 10 USD for 1G is paid and even if the sim in used in Thailand. I have always hated the rates for International calls and calling. This may (or may not) be the solution. Has anyone used this? Signed up for it? I'd love some detail when someone actually gets on the system and tries it.
