  1. That's very nice. I am impressed.
  2. so you photographed them at the gym? I am a little confused
  3. yeah, we'll see re: Travis. The new version is supposed to have improved greatly. They say they use several different translation engines and choose the best one for the language at hand. For sure Google translate is useless for more than a couple of words. Let's just say I don't have high expectations.
  4. My attempt to learn some Thai was limited to a couple of sessions at our local adult education department which offered Thai a decade ago or so. It was enough for me to learn some useful words and phrases, but there's no way I could carry on a real conversation. Each session met once a week for 10 weeks so certainly not ideal. She would make me repeat the word until I managed to get the tones close to correct somehow but I could never really tell what I was doing correctly or wrong. I am glad I learned as much as I did and once I get on the ground there it is interesting how much comes back to me. But since I don't use it all the time it's rusty. But knowing numbers, days, directions and some basic phrase structures does help. I recently purchased the Travis translator device. Thai is among the languages it has onboard but I'll need to test that out with some one who actually speaks Thai.
  5. "the Chinese forum"????

    Retirement

I've been saving diligently and should have a very decent pension when I retire. I will be 51 soon and plan to retire at 62. I like Thailand but think I would go insane if I retired there. It's a nice place to visit though. As someone else up-thread mentioned, my ear doesn't really hear the Thai tones which made my attempts to learn the language a failure. But I suppose if you are immersed full time maybe that makes a difference. While you can get by without it, it seems like life would be better with at least a rudimentary amount of the language. Given the road to hell the US is on I've been thinking about an escape plan though.
  7. I guess if it's always full it makes sense to raise prices
  8. Sorry, I didn't mean to derail this thread. SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) was organized by the countries of the region who put the term South Asian in the name of their organization. I don't think you can blame that on Westerners' misunderstanding or projecting. https://www.nti.org/learn/treaties-and-regimes/south-asian-association-regional-cooperation-saarc/
  9. I don't know who "we" is, but the accepted definition seems to be India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives and sometimes Afghanistan. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Asian_ethnic_groups https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Asia
  10. I said South Asian, not South Indian
  11. I am sure there are many thieves in Pattaya. But thanks for the warning. The cigarette would cross him off my list. I often find young South Asian men very hot. The older I get the broader my type. But there are still some dealbreakers.
  12. 5 star for $100/night will likely be a bit of a challenge. The Crowne Plaza Lumpini is a nice place and you can't get a whole lot closer to the gay area. They offer babysitting service. It's not 5 star, but it's a perfectly nice, upscal-ish place. https://www.ihg.com/crowneplaza/hotels/us/en/bangkok/bkkcp/hoteldetail/hotel-overview# I have not been to the Sofitel, but have stayed at other Sofitel properties and they are always very nice. Maybe see if the Sukhothai has a good deal? BKK is probably a quicker drive and easier to navigate. I read stories all the time about overcrowded and long waits at DMK. You might want to try these questions (or some of them anyway) at Flyertalk.com which has great travel forums. https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thailand-624/ You're going to put a 2 yo in her own room????????
  13. My TDbank account also rebates all ATM fees.
  14. that boy Milo is all legs. I had never heard of him until this week
  15. Maybe the "big" refers to something else?
  16. Thailand too...at least those sad sort of mustaches anyway. It's been going on for a couple of years now
  17. how about "muscle twinks"
  18. in my case, my US bank rebates ATM fees (including the 150 baht fee) charged by the ATM owner. I'm not sure the rate difference is all that big, but the interbank rate is better than what you pay at an exchange booth however on the relatively small amounts I am dealing with it probably doesn't amount to much.
  19. atms everywhere? credit cards
  20. I am a planner by nature as well, so usually have some list of things I'd like to do. In BKK it's much easier for me to find stuff to do. I also appreciate the public transit system for getting around. I don't visit Pattaya very often - maybe every 3rd trip or so. I do find it easier to get bored there. I am not a beach person so I don't go there. I do like shopping so I will spend some time at the big mall wandering around. I agree also that late afternoon is a good time for massage.
  21. who knows is right. It's possible that the job negatively affected him in a way it did not do to his brother. Not everyone is cut out for doing sex work. And I'd imagine that for a young straight man it could really fuck you up and lead to things like self-esteem issues, substance abuse problems to medicate, etc.
  22. wow. good for both of you.
  23. Phnom Kulen is a great day out. Lots of local people enjoying the waterfall. On my latest visit I did Koh Ker and Beng Mealea and then overnighted near Preah Vihear so we could head up first thing in the morning. It is quite impressive.
  24. hope you made it to Bayon...it's my favorite
  25. it's my understanding that the Phare Circus is a huge benefit to the kids in the program. In addition to the performers you do see, there are a lot of trainees - mainly in Battambang I think. And spots in the circus are very sought-after. I think you also offer tips at the end that the performers share. I am sure there is plenty of info out there on the web about the circus. For sure September is not high season. Given the rains it is still green/rainy season. High season is the same as Thailand when the weather is better - Nov to Jan or so. I was there in mid-December a couple of years ago and it was busy but I didn't feel like it was over crowded. The so-called National Museum is a bit of a scam. They do have some decent exhibits, but the artifacts are mainly reproductions with the real things at the actual National Museum in PP. I really had a great time on my most-recent visit to SR. I enjoy the temples. And I agree the people are very nice. I sort of fell in love with the employees at my hotel, especially one of the guys who was a sort of assistant manager/front desk guy. It was funny that the rest of the staff knew what was up, but he seemed a little bit clueless. Very, very sweet boy. They took great care of me - Shinta Mani Club.
