TOURIST ARRIVALS IN THAILAND BY COUNTRY IN 2017

Featured Replies

I imagine the statistics might be based on who ticks the tourist box on the immigration form.

As there is no box for "working as gogo bar boy" & ticking such a box could be a bad idea even if it did exist, I guess the number of tourists from Laos might include the same bar boy crossing the border 12 times a year.

Or people going shopping or otherwise trading from Laos.

I'm also slightly surprised to see the UK at the top of the list of EU countries, when Germany clearly has a larger population & the Germans like their holidays too.

Or the ever returning Malaysian sex tourist crossing the border to Hat Yai twelve times a year.

Still counts as tourist right? Z909 is questioning the number from laos as the number might be significantly less due to the reason some of those counted as tourist are not really tourist but comes as workers (sex or non-sex workers) but claims that they are tourist because no visa is required for that.

sex tourist as as good as any other, perhaps even leaving more money in hands of local population  than those on package tours staying in chain hotels, munching  lunches in McDonalds and raising blood pressure by drinking Starbucks coffee.

Even environmental impact of sex tourists may be limited other than slightly higher use of water perhaps providing they dispose their condoms properly

Yes & helping out disadvantaged people on the way too.

A tourist is a tourist & is entitled to be counted as one.

However, anyone entering Thailand to work or trade isn't really a tourist.

Unless they are on a working holiday.
