Me and my partner rented a 4WD in January and drove north towards Phonsavan via the eastern route. We made an overnight stay in a small village along the way. Roads were fairly good, save for a few kilometres with gravel roads due to roadwork. But, with the road full of chicken, cats, dogs, cows, and children we could hardly drive faster than 40 km/h. After Phonsavan and looking at some of the jars, we took the western route via the banana pancake town of Vang Vieng on the return to Vientiane. Here, the road up until it joined highway 13 (Vientiane-Luang Prabang "highway") was surfaced, but it was a long and winding road. We stopped in a small town about 54 km north of Vang Vieng, and spent the night in a local hotel. No English spoken in neither of the small towns. Road 13 is in a dismal state (picture below), and the heavy truck traffic made it worse. I believe this is the main transport route from Vientiane into China. We did it in three days,, two nights, all in all a lovely trip.

I just downloaded the Grab app to ease travel in the Big Mango. This morning I wanted to travel from my condo in Ploenchit to Shangri-la for some nice dim sum. The app quoted 293 baht. Instead I went down to the street and literally grabbed a metered taxi. Even with a little detour down Silom it only came to 79 baht.

That's what I do. I have a second phone which I use when travelling, buying local sim cards wherever I go. In some countries this is as cheap as a few dollars, in others a bit more. Good for local calls, and even international in some places.

My MacBook is one year old and so is my iPhone 8. My Sony Xperia is brand new. 9 out of 10 times they're not able to connect, and when I do connect it falls out after one or two minutes. I'm in an AirBnb condo, advertised with WiFi. There is WiFi, but it's useless. So a complaint will be filed. The public WiFi at Terminal 21 works wonders, so that's where I spend a couple of hours every day doing my work. Not exactly what I had in mind. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Personally I've stopped using Agoda too. Had a couple of incidents, and their customer service wasn't up to standard.

For that very reason, and — if any trouble with the ticket, I deal with the airline and not some crappy agent with a lousy customer service. Also: when booking hotels I only use Booking.com or Hotels.com, unless it’s a hotel I’ve stayed in many times (like Malaysia in Bangkok). Any disputes are easier to deal with, and believe me, in some countries one can end up in an argument — like if I’m given a room without window, room is half the size as what is advertised, or there is no room at all despite a booking half year earlier. All this has happened to me. And I stopped using Agoda. Their customer service sucks.
