July 29, 201016 yr Active Members For some time now this site has allowed us to bitch about things that bother us elsewhere on the internet, but bitching can only get you so far. We have heard the criticism that some of us only drop in now and then, when it suits our purposes. And it's true, we often come and go. One criticism of MER is that threads die too soon, and that it is hard to get and keep a conversation going. So, my August Challenge is for a group to commit to sticking with the site all through August, trying to keep those conversations going, but of course also to start some. You may not be able to stop in everyday, but the commitment will be to the best you can to do that, and don't just drop in, but drop a post to keep the ball rolling. Now, I wouldn't have issued this challenge if I didn't think some folks would accept it, so don't leave me with my balls hanging, okay? Take the challenge and have some fun. Remember, no bitching!

Which conjures up a slightly skewed take on The August Challenge, and one not entirely out of place in Lucky's lordly thread. July 29, 201016 yr Active Members I think you raise a good question, TampaYankee, and it's one I've been giving some thought to. We all know the old saw about a picture being worth a thousand words. Not only does a picture cover the same ground as a thousand words, but it does so in a fraction of a second and makes the point almost instantly. In years past though, it wasn't easy to find a copy of a picture that did the job, and it wasn't easy to insert a picture in, say, a typed memo or handwritten letter. Today, with billions of pictures available on the internet, as well as electronic communication that makes inserting a picture almost as easy as inserting an exclamation point, pictures are nearly as available as words are. And I think the way we communicate will continue to move in the direction of using more pictures and fewer words. It's always been a challenge to find the right words to say what I want to say, and now it's a challenge to find the right pictures to say what I want to say, and then to find the right balance between words and pictures. An electronic forum like this one is a perfect place to practice, and I appreciate the indulgence of others while trying.

In conversation, I more and more find myself repeating what I have already said to the same person a dozen times before. Theme and, hopefully, variations. But I will do my best to do better here than I can in face-to-face interactions.
