For a country that looks like it is literally getting fucked by Gambia, they shouldn't be bothering gays 🙄

It looks like Gambia is Senegal's mouth!

Very sad. It's odd, I've often wondered why some Muslim and Christian nations have never banned homosexual sex and others do.  I looked it up a few days ago and sure enough it was the fucking Europeans. The response I got said while sodomy was banned in the Muslim religion homosexuality wasn't. But as Europeans began colonizing the world they brought their laws. So while homosexuality has never been illegal in Turkey, the British banned it in India during their rule there. It was banned in progressive Canada until 1969 with the law enthusiastically enforced in some cities and by the RCMP. In the 60s a Canadian man on getting a second conviction was sentenced to an "indefinite" period in prison which could have meant life. That spurred efforts to get the ban lifted. The Calgary police continued to harass gays well into the 90s. And the Vancouver police would label gay hate crimes as something else like road rage. In recent years they refused to charge two rednecks with assaulting a gay guy downtown despite lots of witness evidence. The victiim called his local member of the BC legislature who called the mayor who called the police chief. The police said it was all a misunderstanding, the officers were planning to turn it over to the hate crimes unit. The rednecks pled guilty and had to do some community service I think. It's disappointing that can still happen in one of the most an progressive neightbourhoods in one of the most progressive cities in Canada.

The british. Not the europeans. Sénégal was a French colony and even after the indépendance it was a tolerant country. But Islam and anti-occidental movements have killed this tolerance. The goor jegeen (man woman in Wolof) was the figure of this tolerance.

I'm sure it's easy to blame the English but other former European colonies had similar restrictions.

These type of laws are rarely enforced as they require actual proof along with the police/judiciary being simply not interested.

Many of these former colonies either left old laws in place (they could easily repeal) or simply use vague public order laws to the same effect.

Thats really stupid - sorry to say that! Homosexuality is not illegal in US, in Canada, in Brasil, in Argentina, in Chile,... were all european colonies. And in some countries in africa they start RIGHT now to b prohibit and persecute homosexuality. g.e. it Egypt was a more or less liberal country mentioned Homosexuality... but after the short reign of muslim brothes it was over...and it does not recover because the president now does not want to jeopardize the current peace and quiet. The only liberal african countries in that case are christian countries like South Africa. Name any "christian" country which kill gays. I think ALL country they prohibit homosexuality are muslim countries and not only in africa. And the african leader and societies themself justify there policies against homosexuality with their tradition. I am living as a european in an african country and the people here are LAUGH at left-wing woke theories that blame everything on the colonial era, because the turn to Islam and the fight against homosexuality are in reality a fight against Western woke influence. Just as we are currently seeing in the USA, Russia, and Hungary: the conservative-religious turnaround is a reaction to Western woke influence and NOT a consequence of colonial policies.

ok. my argumentation was more like "conservative" countries with a traditional strong religion tradition vs. more liberal countries with a less strong religion tradition.

so we see in Poland and Hungary and also in evangelistic states in US homophobia not only in islamic states.

But at the end: its not "the europeans" they are responsible for homophobia in africa.

Yet..... give them time if they stay in power.

yes, also not in Hungary and Russia. But in Hungary and Russia its a lot of pressure on the LGBTQ+ community...and also in the "bible-belt" in US, i think...

It is correct to say that the British adopted an anti-sodomy law for sex between men in 1861 calling it the "Offences Against The Persons Law." Not surprisingly it was then applied to virtually all Britain's then overseas Colonies. And it still remains in some. But other colonial countries - eg Portuguese colonies - had the same laws. The French colonies never had the law since it was abolished in 1791.

I am not sure of the difference between homosexuality and sodomy for not all homosexuals practice sodomy. I recall a television interview with Stephen Fry interviewing a government Minister from an African country where the death penalty could be administered for homosexual behaviour. The Minister said he found sodomy abhorrent. Fry claimed he was homosexual and had never practiced sodomy.

I believe the distinction came into practice when a general homosexual law was passed by the British parliament and sent to Queen Victoria for signature. She refulsed, on the basis that it was impossible for one woman to have sex with another! The Bill was returned to parliament for amendment with sodomy replacing homosexuality.

As of last September there are still 65 countries where an anti-sodomy law is on the statute books.
