Indeed, quite typical. I recall some time ago, that it was said that the Thai authorities often announce some new policy, just to gauge reaction, and wait and see what reaction they get. If reaction poor, policy is withdrawn or delayed.

Meridien is classified as a 5 star hotel, and i find it very comfortable. Not mad about bedroom decor, but really good quality sheets, great bathrooms, lots of towels!, excellent breakfasts, and food in executive lounge first class. Service very good. I think its good value, especially compared to the 4 star hotel I have booked in Santa Barbara!
