I have kind of flipped on a big thing. For all the reasons you state, I mostly think of Trump as unrelenting bad news.

But, the action is always in the reaction. So I'm starting to think some good things could come out of this nightmare. Based on a degree of optimism that could be called wildly unrealistic.

Two things not related are happening at once.

First, Trump is turning Americans against stupid wars, just like W. did. And he is turning the entire world against Americans.

Second, Bill Gates is saying earlier this year we crossed AI thresholds creating massive cybersecurity and bioterror vulnerabilities .............. NOW. While AI job loss or AI Terminator-type extinction may be threats for next year or next decade, Gates is saying millions could be taken out by bioterror NOW, based on open source AI models that are available NOW.

If Gates is right, it probably means at some point something very bad will happen. Way worse than some nobody every heard of going on X to warn about fantastic AI threats.

So all of this is basically several massive piles of shit.

The optimism is that these two things may wake enough people up to seek some other path. Neither China nor the US want massive bioterror or cybersecurity crises. America's stockpiles and will to wage war are depleted ................... except for Testosterone Pete, of course. I personally believe things will get worse before they get better. But kind of like in 2006 or so, as W. crashed, I can see a path for how things could eventually get better.
