Colombian Election

By a razor-thin margin, the right-wing, zero experience, Trump backed, “law and order” candidate won the presidential election. Colombian presidents are limited to four-year terms, so there is not a big chance that he can do too much damage. Colombia, and especially Medellín have turned around due to focusing on the root causes of crime and violence, not “law and order”. This guy wants to reduce taxes, cut social programs and build mega prisons in the jungle. Fortunately, he will be faced with many guardrails that will make it difficult. Here’s what Gemini had to say.

Preliminary results show that far-right candidate **Abelardo de la Espriella** has won the runoff election by a razor-thin margin. With over 99.9% of the ballots counted, De la Espriella secured **49.65%** of the vote (12.95 million votes), narrowly defeating progressive senator Iván Cepeda, who captured **48.70%** (12.7 million votes).
The margin is incredibly close—separated by just under 248,000 votes. Because of this tight gap, Cepeda’s campaign has announced it will challenge the initial results from roughly 33,000 ballot boxes and await the final, legally required ballot-by-ballot verification by judges and notaries.
Assuming the victory is certified, De la Espriella’s capability to successfully deliver on his major campaign promises faces several steep structural hurdles.
### 1. Addressing Crime and Security
De la Espriella won largely on a platform promising an "iron fist" (*mano dura*) approach to security, vowing to end Gustavo Petro’s "Total Peace" strategy of negotiating with armed groups.
 * **The Strategy:** He intends to rely on a heavy, military-led strategy to crack down on criminal organizations and narco-trafficking networks.
 * **Likelihood of Success (Moderate to Low):** While a militarized approach may yield short-term security boosts in specific urban centers or targeted zones, total military suppression across Colombia’s complex geography is historically difficult. Ending all peace talks risks pushing various factions (like the ELN or dissident FARC groups) back into full-scale offensive operations, potentially leading to a sharp escalation in rural violence before any stabilization occurs.
### 2. Resolving Economic Problems
To boost the economy, De la Espriella plans to cut taxes, reduce the size of the state by up to 40%, slash regulations, and aggressively expand oil, gas, and mining projects. He has also stated he will keep some popular social measures, such as recent minimum wage increases.
 * **The Strategy:** Attract foreign investment through deregulation and aggressive fossil fuel and natural resource exploitation.
 * **Likelihood of Success (Mixed):** Reopening the oil and gas sectors will likely attract foreign capital and provide a boost to state revenues. However, cutting the state apparatus by up to 40% while attempting to fund a massive military expansion is a difficult fiscal balancing act. Rapidly shrinking public sector jobs and cutting regulations could also trigger intense social unrest and nationwide labor strikes.
### 3. The Political Governance Reality
The greatest obstacle to his success is **governance**.
> Colombia’s electorate is profoundly polarized down the middle, and the legislative branch reflects this division.

Because De la Espriella won by less than one percentage point, he lacks a sweeping popular mandate. The left-wing coalition and independent centrist blocks retain substantial power in the Colombian Congress. Without a clear legislative majority, his most radical proposals—such as restructuring state ministries or passing major tax overhauls—will likely face severe gridlock, forcing him to compromise heavily or rely on executive decrees that will face immediate challenges in the constitutional courts.
