The fate of parents' awards?

My step-mother, now in her mid 90s and essentially wheelchair-bound, can no longer take good care of herself, and has moved to a luxurious assisted-living facility over 500 km from myself and my brother. My brother and I barely communicate, not because of any fallout, but mostly due to his fairly extreme right-wing ideology, and since he has a daughter in her mid 30s, who's married but mentally disturbed. Her children are being home-schooled to "protect" them from any "liberal" or "mainstream" ideas. In fact, my brother and his daughter live in the same gated community. My father passed away over a decade ago. My sister lives mostly in Portugal, because she can't stand to live in Trump's America. She's about to become a Portuguese citizen, and I don't know her plans after Trump leaves office. She's happy in Portugal.

I've felt very proud of my father's accomplishments, He was a distinguished professor of engineering at a renown university. I've had three LTR's in my life, 13.5 years with a former Soviet/Russian citizen, 2.5 years with a Paraguayan citizen (whom I broke up with when I discovered he was lying to me), and my husband (who was born in the same hospital as I was in the US). When they visited my father and step-mother's house the first time, I told them of the awards. I felt the most pride for an international engineering award he won, which was essentially the engineering equivalent of a Nobel Prize. My step-mother is clearing out their condominium, and I asked about his awards. While my brother has asked for our father's doctoral diploma, surprisingly, he doesn't seem interested in the international engineering award (my father has won other prestigious awards, but this award is by far the most prestigious). My husband and I don't like children, and we certainly won't have any. This seems like a family heirloom, but I feel confident that neither my brother's nor my sister's daughters would be interested.

It breaks my heart to think that this award certificate might eventually end up in a trash heap. Have any of you had to consider what to do with your parents' awards? Are there plans to survive future generations?
