President Dwight D. Eisenhower employed a gay man as his personal secretary during some of the most troubling battles against gays in the 50's. A witch hunt like Trump has never seen aimed to ferret gays out of the government, but right next to the president was a gay man, troubled, closeted, and not always fair to other gays.

Ike’s Mystery Man is the perfect title for Peter Shinkle’s fine biography, from which the big headline is about Cutler’s shepherding of a disastrous 1953 executive order under which the lives of thousands of federal employees were destroyed just because they were gay," the Post says.

The new book should be a fascinating read.

I finished reading this biography and although it is extremely well-written, the subject is a closet case who watched others suffer, lose their jobs, commit suicide, and did nothing to alleviate it despite the high degree of influence he had with Eisenhower. He fell in love with a younger man and acted like a teenage girl with his lovenotes. Yet he was involved in the highest levels of discussions and planning for things like nuclear war.
