A graffiti artist, also now known as a "tagger" is being mourned in Los Angeles after he was killed at 4 am yesterday after having successfully "tagged" a freeway median with two other young men. As they fled the scene of their art, one of them, a 20 year old, was hit by a car that had just merged into the lane he was running in. The police detained the other two taggers, but apparently the car driver got away. No mention of a search was made in the news report: (NewsCore) - A 20-year-old graffiti tagger in Los Angeles was killed early Saturday morning when he was hit by two cars, the Los Angeles Times reported. Raul Garcia Jr. and two other men were tagging the center divider of the 710 Freeway near Compton at the time of the incident, according to the California Highway Patrol. About 4:17am, they ran across the freeway with Garcia's two companions making it safely. However, Garcia was hit by a Nissan Maxima and was thrown into the next adjacent lane, where he was hit by a second car, which drove away. Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other two men were detained by police. The incident shut down all four lanes on a stretch of the 710 Freeway for two hours.

Hackers hit websites owned by Gawker media today, shutting them down. The hackers also discovered the names of users at the site who used the word "password" as their password! If kids can shut down Gawker media, can they shut down MER? http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/13/business/media/13gawker.html?_r=1&hp Gawker responds: Our user databases appear to have been compromised. The passwords were encrypted. But simple ones may be vulnerable to a brute-force attack. You should change your Gawker password and on any other sites on which you've used the same passwords. We're deeply embarrassed by this breach. We should not be in the position of relying on the goodwill of the hackers who identified the weakness in our systems. And, yes, the irony is not lost on us. For tips on creating strong passwords, see this post on Lifehacker. Which is: http://lifehacker.com/184773/geek-to-live--choose-and-remember-great-passwords

If Lucky's Place is not the ideal spot for this announcement, I don't know where else it would go. The dates are finally settled and we expect a good crowd this year. ALL MER POSTERS ARE INVITED.

We are not communicating here. I see the charges as a red herring, or an alternative way to trash this guy for leaking the documents he did. The sex charges would be of no concern to us if he was just another Swede. It's the document leaking that is the issue. Those who think he did something awful in leaking them are using the alleged rapes as a further attempt to dirty him up. I think the leaking is something that stands apart and should be judged separately.

I wondered if anyone would notice. Thanks!

KYTOP and I agree! If people are serious about the deficit then just let the tax rates expire for everyone and go back to what they were 10 years ago. No need for a class warfare to result for it.

Surprising all of her boyfriends, teen starlet Taylor Momsen has revealed that she is "a promoter of masturbation." The Gossip Girl star's touching story is reported in today's Daily News: http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2010/12/10/2010-12-10_gossip_girl_star_taylor_momsen_17_im_a_promoter_of_masturbation.html

"Or else NYC & its denizens have me so mesmerized that I can no longer focus on anything else!" Could be why we don't see so much of you these days?
-
This so-called rape is a side issue drummed up to smear the guy for leaking documents. Why not respond to what he actually did that we can prove? He leaked troves of classified documents, and threatens to release more. Here's a thorough look at the so called rape charges: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/abraham/detail?entry_id=78430

You assume that this was the only way to get those benefits to the unemployed, so we should all sit down and shut up. I disagree.

We are all paragons of sexual virtue here, so we don't brush it aside. We just give it the credibility it deserves! The government is having a devil of a time making those charges stick, so doesn't it occur to you that perhaps the man is innocent? That would stop me from using the allegations against him. It's so easy to make an accusation of sexual impropriety, so much harder to prove it. We here can all throw the first stone, but even so, just think how easy it is for an underage guy to tell you* that he's 20, then go to the authorities on you and reveal that he is only 16. It's your word against the minor's that he told you he was 20, and even if he did, the fact that he was underage sticks with you for life. People will not brush it aside when it's your picture on the front page! Nor will they presume that you are innocent. Is that the kind of society we want? (*The "you" here is generic, not specific to the original poster!)

How vulnerable are smaller websites such as this one if anyone can download a program off the internet which then attacks the site with multiple requests for information? How many people would need to do this before the average small website is overwhelmed? A dangerous can of worms may have been opened here when the average Joe sees how easy it is to bring down a website. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2010/12/10/international/i065847S70.DTL&tsp=1

KY, I wish I could agree with you. This isn't bi-partisanship, it is capitulation. Obama gave the Republicans their deficit building tax cuts for millionaires, and then cut Social Security using the same "temporary" idea that the Bush tax cuts used. In two years, when the rates return to normal, it will be called a tax hike, and the Repubs will fight it. Thus no funding for future Social Security recipients, and the Republicans have what they want- the end of Social Security. Obama made a huge mistake here.
-
Millionaires are rejoicing at the Obama tax cuts, and workers who pay Social Security are also probably happy about that rate cut. Another temporary cut, right? Read this, and you'll see how the Republicans win again! Will the Democrats ever learn? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/08/tax-cut-deal-a-hidden-thr_n_793983.html

4-3 is fine with me. No doubt One Finger set an excellent example for the Council, and they decided to go gay!

When I first heard of this, I thought it seemed a silly invention. Isn't 3-D only for the movies? Well, today I got to try it at Costco and my mind changed. It's pretty cool. I think once you get used to it it might not be so cool, and then there is the question of which shows would benefit from it, but then... BTW- The TV brand that seems to be the one most returned is the Vizio brand. Every time I go to Costco someone is returning one.

Glad that you liked it, eeyore. I know it is not the traditional movie, but it sure had enough to please me.

Today we are being told that we no longer need Vitamin D supplements, and calcium supplements could lead to a slight increase in risk for heart attack. So two more remedies join the list of supplements once thought helpful only to be dethroned later. http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-vitamin-d-20101206,0,1367919.story http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-calcium-heart-20101206,0,7800951.story Finally, could a high carbohydrate diet work for you?: http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-fitness-twinkie-diet-20101206,0,5075086.story

hehehe...Aces, you pose a tough question. If someone objects, do they object to the use of Lucky's name, or do they object because they just want a generic name? If the reason is the first one, they might feel uncomfortable saying so, which they shouldn't. I am glad to have had the honor for the last 4 months, I understood all along that it was a temporary honor, and the choice for the future is not mine. If TY and Oz want to go in a different direction, or if they want to put the name up to a vote, I am happy with that. As is often said- it's their website!
