I stayed at the Rose on my first Bangkok trip in 1988, the rooms were very basic but the restaurant downstairs served up some very nice food and the staff were very good and helpful. For me, I like the Raya but every time I go online to check on booking them it either says no rooms available (unless I book at least 6 months in advance) or the price is up a bit too high. I liked the Tarntawan of old but my last stay there the aircon was all screwed up, literally water coming out of it and all the maintenance staff did was to keep mopping it up plus the thermostat was stuffed and it was freezing cold as there was no way to adjust the temperature on it. I don't mind the Ibis at all, yes the rooms may be a bit small but then I'm not there to dance around a big room, it has a very basic gym which is OK and the pool is a positive for me and add to that the food and staff were good too. Location wise I also liked the Ibis, next trip (most likely second half of 2026) will either be Ibis or Tarntawan.

So I had this plan to return to Bangkok this November but unfortunately that plan is now out the window as upcoming surgery and a lengthy recovery will rule that out until at least mid 2026 or even later. On the bright side, if all goes well I get to ponder on next year's trip and will become a massage parlour junkie once again, there will still be a restriction on the massage due to the area of surgery but to be honest the massage will only be a warm up for the extras fun. I have never used nor will I use any of those booking sites, I always prefer to deal either directly with the airlines and hotels or as with my last trip used my local Flight Centre travel agent (yes I was in a lazy mood and had them book the flights and hotel). At present Trivago is flooding our TV channels with what I call bullshit adverts, they compare prices with a website hotelleap.com, I searched for that website and it seems to not exist as a hotel booking site. Back in 2022 Trivago was found guilty of making misleading representations about hotel room rates on its website and television advertising (link below) so there's no chance I would use them. A couple of my old photos taken a while back in Ayutthaya, I do love old ruins and reading about the history of them.

I've been there twice now, both day trips. The first was just a road trip and was quite good but I was glad to get back to Bangkok as the seating in the van wasn't as comfortable as I would have liked. The second trip was much better, I booked it at the small travel agent that used to be at the Surawong end of Soi Thaniya (such a pity she's not there anymore) and was run through Tourism Authority of Thailand. The journey down was quite good and was via Bang Pa In but the journey back was even better, we left Ayutthaya to a pier by bus and then had a pleasant river boat trip back to Bangkok (including a delightful lunch on board). Now that was before covid but I felt just a day trip was sufficient for me, I can't say whether the TAT still has that trip going or not.
