True story. Even our beloved gay Thailand would have to be boycotted. Corruption seems to be a bad thing until it works to one's advantage.

I speak some Thai but if I had no Thai at all which place would have more of a language barrier? I don't know one word of Portugese. I think it would be a bit easier to pick up survival Portugese from the looks of things.  So what do our esteemed members think, which has the greater language barrier for a complete newbie, who didn't even look at a phrase book?

 

Also I don't just mean boys but for life in general?

More English in Thailand than Brazil. Even in tourist areas.

I have been reading the Boytoy forums today and it seems to me that Rio has a steeper learning curve than Thailand to me. There are posts that go on forever with advice for beginners and many people say it is better to have a friend go with you the first time. I understand if you put in the effort it is probably fine but the amount of advice regarding various aspects of just having fun and getting a guy are somewhat lengthy. 

 

In Thailand I can pretty much limit my advice to one or two sentences and the rest takes care of itself. Bring money, go to Pattaya, have fun. That's it. 

 

I still find it intriguing I would have loved Rio in my younger days. Another observation is it seems people get bored in the day in Thailiand but the saunas in Rio seem to be closed by 9 at night. Leaving the opposite problem. 

 

One more question would be is how is the quality of the ocean over there? I am going to guess that it probably isn't better than Pattaya given the size of the city? I could be wrong. I am not at all trying to be negative and think this is a pretty legit question. Some reports about the sailing competitions lead me to believe it can be pretty gross. The reports might be sensationalism however.  

Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches are great. There open oceans. Most of what you hear about bad wate are mostly landlocked lagoons and bays.

 

The Saunas stay open till 11pm or so, but boys have usually made their money earlier in the evening and they head out earlier. Just not a lot of action as you get to closing.

 

While saunas close earlier than Thailand, there are many bars and clubs where people head that just get going at midnight.

But there is no question there are many more sex options in Thailand.

It sounds like if you can swim in the ocean that rio would be a lot funner in the day than Pattaya. 

The beaches are 100% better than Pattaya. White sandy beaches. Lots of concessions . Sidewalk restaurants.

Okay how do you think international restaurants stack up against say Bangkok? I don't think Pattaya is a fair comparison on this one. I like the local food well enough here but find the international dining scene in Thailand to be over all disappointing.

I'm the wrong person to talk about restaurants. I don't like Thai food. I eat simple western when I go out. But I cook and eat many of my meals at my condo.

 

Brazil has a very good restaurant scene. Both countries are equally good.

Alright thanks for the replies. I eat out quite a bit and almost always at western restaurants here. This can be quite expensive. 

Rio is like many places ..There are tourist restaurants that can be expensive but lots of reasonable places also.

 

Also Brazilian food is much closer to Western Food then Thai food.

 

Beaches are as good as anywhere in the world .  I don't like the Sauna scene which is why I no longer visit along with the fact that although twinks are available they are harder to find.

 

Fabulous sightseeing to do and tourist activities , far more choices then Thailand IMHO.  

 

I also believe no Visa needed for Thais so you could always bring a date.

Correct. Up to 90 days without Visa for holders of a Thai passport in Brazil. But then, wouldn't that be like taking coal to Newcastle, bringing owls to Athens or sand into a desert?

As someone who has been to Thailand and Brazil many times I believe a debate about which is better for the gay traveller is a rather pointless one. I love the Thai people and they are attractive.Unless you are totally gullible or one of those tragic middle aged/elderly queens searching for ''true love'' you will have a great time as long as you realise that foreigners are known as walking ATM's. The Thais do things with style.

Unless you are young and beautiful, a category that very few contributors to this esteemed forum would fit, in Brazil most of your activities will be confined to the rent boy saunas. As I said in my earlier post they are fabulous. You will see some of the most beautiful men on the planet at your disposal for a comparatively modest price. One important difference between the Thais and the Brazilians is that the latter have no reserve. As for what the Brazilians have between their legs all I can say is there must be something in the water. With their lack of reserve all they know is if you've got it you flaunt it. I have seen (and sampled) some spectacular specimens.

So Thailand or Brazil take your pick. I go to both on a regular basis and love them both.

It isn't really a debate but rather a discussion. I have found this thread the opposite of pointless. This is actually one of the more interesting topics running on this site lately. I am glad that it seems the mods are letting threads into the main category and not consigning them to the waste bin of obscurity of the sub forums.

 

This site is becoming a go to site for me and can easily replace going to some other sites with the growing amounts of info on it. I live in Thailand so basically comparing any place gay or not to Thailand provides a good frame of reference for me. The more content the better, I just skip threads that aren't in my interest.

I have never been to Brazil but have made a trip to Barcelona. Is there anybody out there that would care to chime in on whether or not the rent boy sauna in Barcelona is similar to those being discussed in Barzil?

There has been a detailed discussion on this very topic in the Forum Section European Escorts on the Daddysreview website. Thermas Barcelona and the Brazilian saunas operate on a similar principle in that you make your own financial arrangement with the young man but in the Brazilian saunas you pay for a room whereas in Thermas the rooms are freely available but you can pay for an ''upmarket'' suite, like the ones you pay for in Brazil.
