I am in Cairo now.  There are plenty of guys asking for money on Grindr.  None of them is really to Brazilian standard in terms of appearance, so I haven't tried any.  Plus, I am a coward, not sure about the law, culture and safety.  I guess I am just gonna be a good sexless tourist.

What do you mean by 'Brazilian standard' in terms of appearance?  It is a muslim country so I don't think guys are going to be walking around with speedo's like Ipanema lol.. I found the Egyptians hot but that is me, I prefer younger and skinny - twinkish looks and there are plenty of cute Egyptian eye candy for me. As for hooking up there - homosexuality is obviously frowned upon in a majority muslim country.  It isn't technically illegal but the authorities have been known to arrest gays for engaging immoral acts using vague 'indecency' laws.  A western tourist being cornered in this way is probably extremely rare, but I guess not impossible.

I wouldn't rule out hooking up with someone but be very cautious.  Meet in a public place first and get a good sense of the person before doing anything.  Might be difficult to bring one to your hotel though. I have a friend who had no issues staying in the western 5 star hotels in Cairo.  I have no experiences with Air bnb in Cairo but if there is a doorman/security to the building - could be problematic.

They probably are. About the concern for the local laws shared by some friends, you are correct. Be super careful in public, but you will be safe in private, specially if your date is in the privacy of your European hotel. 

My experience in Saharian Africa es limited to two weeks in Morocco, 30 years ago. If that experience is transferrable, the secret for your safety and the gate to experience the local culture is hiring one boy to be your local guide. In Spanish, we call them the "espantamoros", something like "scaremores". Not only they keep other hustlers away from you, but also bargain best prices (remember bargaining is the standard) in markets, keep you away from dangerous areas, give you the best possible tips on local life, and provide you any goods you may need, including themselves or of you do not want them, other male or female companions. They work for a vey low daily fee, and may even invite you to their homes to share a meal. 

I went on a group tour to Egypt a decade ago. The full trip from Aswan, the Nile on a felucca, Cairo, Luxor and the Sinai. In Luxor while taking a  walk with my tour mate-who was a guy-was approached by locals asking if we were interested in men. My tour mate was straight and I was nervous-being in a group tour and all.  Was surprised they were so open about it. Someday will go again by myself.

 

I have since read online accounts of the felucca "trade" where you can service for extra. I don't how true it is or how current the information. But the men I saw were stunning.
