Tokyo - kind of a trip report - 24 Kaikan on a Friday afternoon

I just realized it’s Pride weekend in Tokyo, so that may have contributed to the crowds yesterday. Not sure what Pride is like here in Tokyo. I went back in the 90s and it was a very small little procession under a freeway with people covering their faces. I’m assuming things have changed. Anyway, now I’ll have to go back again on another Friday just so I can make a fair comparison.

Just realised my hotel is really close by. Wish to try it out just unsure of the steps..and a little shy. Haha

You go up the stairs from the street, enter and take off your shoes (there are very big signs). Put your shoes in a shoe locker. You’ll need a 10 yen coin. Take your key to the counter and give it to the guy at the desk. He will give you a locker key with the same number (pay attention to the shoe lockers - some of them are for private rooms only). They will point to a sign to ask you what you want. I have been there many times but only just realized there are several options - a private room (not necessary), a towel set + robe, or just a towel set. I never wear the robe, so the last time I got just the towel set - small towel (which you carry in the bath area) and bath towel (which you can wear in more public areas). You can pay with cash or credit card. Just the towel set is about 2,900 yen, towel + robe is about 3,300 yen.

They ask you your name.

I think they all speak some English at the desk. Don’t expect a friendly greeting. LOL. Don’t take it personally.

Grab your stuff and go straight to the back on the same floor to find your locker. Strip and wrap your bath towel around your waist, take the small towel with you and go up to the third floor (you are entering on floor 2).

Again, head towards the rear (pun intended) and you’ll find some cubicles (some with little doors) to store your bath towel. I always choose one of the covered ones near the bottom. You can put your bath towel in one of those if you want. Remember where you put it.

Enter the wet area.

There is a row of plastic stools and everything you need to wash up. Do the bathing ritual. You’ll see two baths - one is hotter the other is cooler. Soak if you want. It’s a good spot to see who is there and get your bearings.

From the bath area, if you walk to the back, there are showers and two dry saunas. Beyond that, there is a cold plunge, and two steam rooms - one of them is very wet.

Cruising and fun can often happen in the saunas or steam rooms. The steam room all the way at the back is usually where I have the most luck. You can also play in the shower stalls if you want privacy (a few of them have glory holes).

There are two toilets in the shower area that have hoses if you are planning on bottoming.

Go up to the fourth floor for “dark rooms”. There are several rooms with beds. This is not my favorite part. This is where I went last Friday with the Malaysian guy.

Beyond that, the floors are private rooms. Nothing seems to happen there. I guess guys who get rooms meet someone and take them there? Or maybe they sleep.

The very top floor is an outdoor roof deck.

During the week, there seems to be a lunchtime rush of mostly Japanese guys. Depending on what you look like, this might not be the best time to go. That rush seems to last a few hours and then it gets quiet until later afternoon when it starts to get busy again. I’d say about 3 p.m. is a good time to go. I’ve always had luck at that time.

Early on a weekend day is a nice crowd (for me). Enough people to get lucky, but not too many where it becomes overwhelming. By 5 or 6 it gets really crowded. They close the shower/sauna area around 5:50 for cleaning, so that really limits your options until they are done. If you go after 6 on a Friday/Saturday, it will probably be very busy. I have never gone that late. I’ve always gone early and always found someone to play with.

One thing I noticed on a Sunday early afternoon was that there were a lot of people sleeping in the dark room area. I’m assuming the were leftover from Saturday night. So early Saturday seemed better than early Sunday.

When you finish, go back down to your locker, get dressed and return everything to the desk. There are signs saying you’ll be charged if you don’t return all of your towels, so make sure you have everything. They will return your shoe lockers key.

Go back to the entrance and put on your shoes in the small entryway.

That’s it!

My recommendation would be to go around 3 p.m. on a weekday. It will be busy enough that you’ll be able to have fun but not so busy that you’ll be overwhelmed. Eat before you go in case you want to stay more than a few hours.

Saturday anytime seems to be good, but early is better in my opinion for reasons I’ve stated.

Sunday later in the afternoon seems better, after those who have slept over have left and a new awake crowd arrives.

One thing I like is that there are enough guys there who are attracted to older guys and guys with bellies that everyone seems to be able to find someone to play with.

This also seems like a good time because there are many tourists in town, meaning a bigger variety of guys to play with. I met the hot Malaysian this past Friday. The last two times I went, I met hot Korean guys. Japanese guys are hit or miss. Many of them only like other Japanese, but I think the ones who choose this location might like foreigners as well. I like having more options though as a 65-year-old with a bit of a belly.

Hope this helps. I understand the shyness, but everyone is there for the same reason. If nothing else, go and have a good soak/sauna and enjoy the eye candy.
