https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/aug/23/protests-as-newborn-removed-from-greenlandic-mother-after-parenting-competence-tests

"A Greenlandic mother’s one-hour-old baby was removed from her by Danish authorities after she underwent “parenting competence” tests – despite a new law banning the use of the controversial psychometric assessments on people with Greenlandic backgrounds. Ivana Nikoline Brønlund, who was born in Nuuk to Greenlandic parents and has played for the Greenlandic handball team, gave birth to her daughter, Aviaja-Luuna, on 11 August in a hospital in Hvidovre, near Copenhagen, where she lives with her family. An hour later, the local municipality took the infant into foster care. Brønlund, 18, says she has since only seen her daughter once, for an hour, when she was not allowed to comfort the baby or change her nappy.

The “parenting competence” tests, known as FKU (forældrekompetenceundersøgelse), were banned on people with Greenlandic backgrounds earlier this year after years of criticism by campaigners and human rights bodies, who argued successfully that the tests were racist because they were culturally unsuitable for people from Inuit backgrounds. As the law came into force in May, campaigners are asking why Brønlund was still subjected to a test...Brønlund was told that her baby was removed because of the trauma she had suffered at the hands of her adoptive father, who is in prison for sexually abusing her. The municipality told her she was “not Greenlandic enough” for the new law banning the tests to apply, despite her being born in Greenland of Greenlandic parents...".

Do you think mothers should be subjected to "parental competency tests" in order to keep their children? And should mothers be punished because their fathers raped them? It seems like quite an over-reach to me.

I fully agree with you. Political correctness running amok. I thought Danish are more level headed

I am also in agreement with you.  Such a terrible thing to do.  I have never heard of such thing as a parental competency test.  My goodness would the world be in trouble if all the parents were given a competency test.  What percentage would fail?!?  Don't know anything about Danish law, but I would be looking for a good lawyer and fighting it.  Certainly does seem like over-reach to me as well.

Just read in the news this morning where an appeals panel in Denmark reverse the decision and return the infant girl to her mother.  The article also mentioned that for years the government of Denmark had doctors implant IUD's in Greenlandic women to prevent pregnancy and control the Greenlandic population.  The women and their families were not aware of these implanted IUD's, and a number of them recently filed a lawsuit against the government.  The current prime minister of Denmark was quoted in the article as agreeing in principle to the establishment of a fund to compensate the victims of this horrible practice.  Discussions regarding such a fund are to take place when she (prime minister) visits Greenland on Wednesday.

Not to doubt the story, but how can one not be aware one is having an IUD inserted into one's uterus? Were they knocked unconscious? I can understand not being aware one is getting an injection of a long-term contraceptive such as Depo-Provera--for example if one is lied to and told the injection is a vitamin, immunization, or something else. However, I can only think of two ways to get a foreign body into one's uterus. Either the woman has to cooperate, or she has to be rendered unconscious.

They could have been told that the device was something harmless,  or beneficial,  and the women may not have realised. Odder things have happened.
