PeterRS Posted September 25 Posted September 25 Bangkok's creaky infrastructure showed itself again yesterday when a huge sinkhole opened up near Vajira Hospital in the Dusit area. Officials blame recent heavy rain and subway construction, but Bangkok is used to both and these rarely result in large sinkholes opening up. It makes one wonder where the next one will occur! TMax Posted September 25 Posted September 25 An update and it's not looking good, I believe the purple line extension runs under this road and this one is just short of the Thai Parliament. Mightn't mean anything but I would be very worried about that stretch of road at the moment. Quote New Road Bulging Found 2km from Bangkok Sinkhole Site Authorities discovered water seepage and road swelling in front of Boon Rawd Brewery on Samsen Road this morning, approximately 2 kilometers from yesterday's massive sinkhole near Vajira Hospital. They quickly cordoned off the area with traffic cones at 8:30 AM on September 25th, fearing another road collapse. The pavement shows signs of bulging with water seeping through the surface. The discovery raises concerns about underground infrastructure stability along Samsen Road following yesterday's dramatic sinkhole that opened near Vajira Hospital and Samsen Police Station. TMax Posted September 25 Posted September 25 A quick stabilisation effort and that is one hell of a lot of concrete. From The Nation Bangkok authorities have abandoned an effort to winch debris out of a 50-metre deep sinkhole on Samsen Road, choosing instead to rapidly pour 500 cubic metres of concrete into the cavern to stabilise the ground before anticipated heavy rainfall. The sinkhole, which opened near the entrance to Vajira Hospital during construction of the MRT Purple Line extension, poses a significant threat to the adjacent Samsen Police Station. Suriyachai Rawiwan, Director of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s (BMA) Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, confirmed the urgent change in strategy on Thursday. The original plan, devised by Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, failed after a crane could not lift the debris and concrete sections. "The pieces were jammed against the earth and other fragments inside the hole," Suriyachai explained. "This necessitated an urgent plan change: pouring concrete directly into the sinkhole to rapidly restore the road surface and minimise impact on the public." BL8gPt 1 Quote

jimmie50 Posted September 25 Posted September 25 Pretty devastating and scary. I would be worried about the stability of some of those nearby buildings, including the hospital...not just the police station. I know you periodically hear about sink holes in Florida, but never actually seen or experienced one up close and personal. Watching that video gave me chills...and not in a good way.
