I have followed Li Ming Shun's career since I first saw some of his paintings about 13 years ago. I'd have bought one or two if the prices had been more reasonable! He had a small exhibition at Dick's Cafe in Bangkok about 9 years ago, but the works were far from his best.

 

Here are a few more from his website. There are others which I think readers would find interesting, but I am not sure if they fit in to the Message Centre Policies . They are all on his website listed above, though.

Maybe this would be a good opportunity to air this topic. For example, following the video link at the bottom of the page you will find things not permitted on this forum. Does that make sense? Whether in the opinion of others it does or doesn't, I for one am concerned. What would I like to see on the forum? As already alluded to, 'tasteful' pichers or photos. If some show the flaccid male organ, so-called full frontal, so what? The photo or pic can be just as tasteful with or without. If you want an erection on GT you have to pay for it!

With a much larger volume of posts than usual, it’s not surprising that it gets difficult to keep in touch with all the various threads. In Post #108 on the Gay Thailand Board's “This is a suck ass site”, I made a similar point -

My concern about hypocrisy remains, however.
 . . If you open the two vdo sites, there are dozens of hard core porn photos there for all to see. And absolutly anyone clicking on gaythailand,com can open these. They do not even have to register as a member! Yet the Message Board, for which registration is required, is quite severely restricted in terms of topics and visual elements. Indeed, one of the items on the Code of Conduct specifically states –

Absolutely agree - although my definition of "tasteful" may be a bit broader than what you intended. Some very handsome and fit dudes.

Ultimately, if we're banning nudity just on parts of the site, it would be good to understand the reasons & also where the limits lie.

Very tastefully done, those two Venus's.

 

I have always imagined nude male sculpture didn't faithfully represent his genitalia. It has not seemed in proportion to the rest of his body. Some of the slim young men look ok, whereas a big hefty bloke like Posidon looks ridiculous.

 

It would be interesting to post some photos of classical male nudes, but I'm not sure if showing them on this message board is permitted. Hopefully a mod will tell us they are.

On another thread I already posted a photo of Michelangelo's David in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence - and I'm still here!! I can't see why a classical nude sculpture or painting in a non-erect state would violate the rules, especially if it is already displayed in a public place. No doubt z909 will guide us.

The breasts look bigger on the "slim" version or is it just my own eyeballs playing tricks on me via some optical illusion? If it isn't, I would like to see how that works out on male genitalia. If life imitated art, I think I would like to slim down to about 44 kilos so i could start buying XXL condoms.

Another great David sculpture is the Donatello one, quite controversial in its time but now secure in the Bargello museum in Florence.

 

Here is David again, this time in a painting. Taken from the 'net so sorry, cannot attribute it.

Like the Michelangelo statue, Donatello's David has a minute appendage. The same is true with Celllini's Perseus which is also in the Piazza della Signoria. As I asked in the other thread, I do wonder why, the more so when men seemed always to boast about their amorous conquests at that time. Mind you, with the equipment in these photos, perhaps penetrative sex was not their forte And since all three artists/sculptors are assumed to have been gay, need I say more?

If anyone reading this hasn't been to Florence, I would urge you to rectify that omission! The Piazza della Signoria mentioned by FH is absolutely fabulous. Bear in mind the David on display there is a copy. The original is in the Uffizi. Here is what I wrote in my journal after visiting Florence a few years ago.

 

For a first time visitor, only a short stroll from the cathedral, to suddenly find yourself in the Piazza Della Signoria has to be one of the highlights of a visit to Florence. In this square, just outside the Palazzo Vecchio, once stood David, he still does but only as a replica; still pretty impressive though. There are many other glorious statues to marvel at:- Perseus in bronze by Cellini dates from 1554, Giambologna’s Hercules and the Centaur and his Rape of the Sabine Women, the latter in the loggia since 1583. They span an enormous period in history from Roman copies of Greek originals up to ‘modern’ times, represented by Pio Fedi’s The Rape of Polyxena, in the loggia since 1865. Menelaus holding the body of Patroclus is a heavily-restored Roman copy based on a Greek original (240 BC).

 

Sadly I was unable to tour the Bargello where the Donatello David is housed. I had simply run out of time and had overlooked the fact that museum is sometimes closed in the afternoons.

Although not nude, this is one my favorite paintings which hangs in the Louvre in Paris. I first saw it in 1978. This evokes so much emotion. They are both posed in a passionate embrace highlighted by a subtle diagonal line that seems to run from the lower left to the upper right of the painting. Truly a work of art in every sense.

 

The artist is Jean-Honore Fragonard. It is entitled The Bolt, (c. 1784) oil on canvas.

 

Bear in mind the David on display there is a copy. The original is in the Uffizi

 

The Uffizi is a stunning Gallery and worth visiting if only to see the restored Botticellis. But in the interest of accuracy, the original David is in the Accademia.

 

Anyone visiting Florence should definitely book visits to both Galleries on-line at least a week in advance. The queues can last for two hours for those who have not booked.

Have you been to the Frick Collection in New York? It's one of my favourite museums. You'll be blown over by the Fragonard Room which has several large paintings including four of his major works.

Indeed they can. Another excerpt from my journal:

 

. . . I'd been urged to book my ticket for the illustrious Uffizi art gallery to save me queuing but it is shut on Mondays and when I went to investigate the next morning the earliest date for booking was the Friday, so I had missed my chance! Later I was to rue this failure as I had to queue for 2 ½ hours on Thursday morning. Still, by then I was getting used to it, having spent nearly 3 hours the previous day queuing for the Galleria Dell’Accademia; the home since the 1870’s of Michelangelo’s David, an enormously popular statue – he’s Florence personified. In fact there are three versions of him! The original, very well restored version in the Galleria, and two copies elsewhere.

 

You can appreciate Florence to best advantage by seeing it from above, an easy task as the tallest buildings are the churches, so by climbing either the famous dome or the campanile (tower) of the duomo (cathedral) you are blessed with a marvellous 360^o view. You can also see the swarms of people down below, many of whom are queuing! Yes, tourists are everywhere and you just have to put up with it. Everybody is good-natured however and I never saw any bad incidents. Mind you, you’d be hard-pressed to be in a bad mood in Florence, it’s all there to be savoured.
