I report on crime and mishaps in Pattaya but I’m always on lookout for a feel good story. I was lucky to find one today thanks to Bangkok Post. Two 14-year-old boys received public praise for returning a wallet containing cash and identification documents to police after finding it in an ice bucket outside a shopping mall in Pattaya on Thursday night. Noppadol Phuphiphat and Phattraraphol Ngao-ngam, both in Matthayom 2 (Grade 7) at Bannernplubwan and Watsuttawas schools respectively, were walking with a friend's older brother when they discovered the wallet outside CentralFestival Pattaya Beach in Bang Lamung district, Chon Buri. The two teens immedia…

From CNN CNN — Warning: This report contains graphic descriptions of sexual violence. It was the early hours of the morning when a guard entered Sohrab’s cell – a small, dark room with a barred window and a blanket on the floor – in Kabul’s sprawling Pul-e-Charkhi prison last August. The 19-year-old was escorted to another room in the complex, where he heard a Taliban member order the prison guards to leave and stop anyone else from entering. Panic set in, for Sohrab knew what these words often preceded. He had experienced physical violence at the hands of the Taliban before. “He grabbed me from behind, tore my clothes apart and raped me,” S…

From CNN Travel It’s slim, it’s sleek, it has a third fuel tank, and it’s ready to open up unexplored long-haul routes. It’s the new Airbus A321XLR — the XLR is for “Xtra Long Range” — and it just made its inaugural flight with Spain’s Iberia airline on Thursday, with a hop from Madrid to Boston. Iberia’s 182-seat plane is the world’s longest-range single-aisle commercial aircraft, with a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles (a little over 5,400 miles). For comparison, New York to Istanbul is about 5,000 miles. Airbus also says it burns 30% less fuel per seat than previous-generation aircraft. What this kind of range on a single-aisle plane m…

I believe most of us have long thought of Amsterdam as one of the world’s most liberal locations. Think again. From CNN AmsterdamCNN — Anger, fear and anxiety are still simmering in Amsterdam. Last week, Israeli soccer fans were attacked in the streets, Palestinian flags ripped off walls and antisemitic slurs yelled during riots. While the Dutch capital now feels calm, residents and legislators fear that tensions still haven’t peaked.“It’s not only antisemitism, it’s also about anti-Muslim racism. It’s also about xenophobia. We’re seeing a rise of all these types of discrimination and racism,” city councilor Sheher Khan, the leader of a loca…

From Pattaya Mail By Barry Kenyon British pensioners abroad, including Thailand, will soon lose UK banking confidentiality if suspected of cheating on their state pension. The Data Protection and Digital Information Bill, presently at committee stage in the House of Lords, is expected to come into force early in 2025. It requires British banks and building societies to share with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) the accounts of British citizens, both at home or abroad, where fraud looks likely. The main abuse amongst a small minority of British expats is hiding the fact that they live in countries not eligible to receive annual increases in …

I have been using Airbnb for my travels, and I am very happy with their service so far. However, it is always good to have an alternative. I heard about Expedia, which I thought it was a site to book flights, hotels, and car rentals. However, they also offer now homes for short term renting. Comparing it against Airbnb, one con I see is that Expedia only allows you to rent up to 29 days, and I am currently also planning for longer stayings. On 29 days or shorter rents, their prices seem competitive against Airbnb, and a major advantage is that you do not have to pay until you arrive. I am not looking for hotels. Does anyone have any experiences renting homes for…

In a matter of days since the election, the dollar has gained in excess of a full baht. As of this posting, it had climbed to 34.87. When I last changed currency day before election, I got 33.54. This is the result of the increase in the interest rate on the US 10-year bond (4.429% as of this posting). The pricing action reflects the sentiment among bond traders that Trump’s policies will increase inflation as the prospect of tariffs on imported goods will become reality and tax cuts will add to the national debt. Even the Fed’s recent quarter-point reduction wasn’t enough to persuade bond traders otherwise,

The King and Queen of Spain went to flood-stricken areas of their kingdom to show support. They ended up being pelted with mud by the locals. Maybe they're as dumb as Trump supporters, believing the royals control the weather? https://apnews.com/article/spain-floods-king-protest-mud-a8525bd82cf4cc3fc6273d535cbb9d66 "...Queen Letizia broke into tears sympathetically after speaking to several people, including one woman who wept in her arms. Later, one of the queen’s bodyguards had a bloody wound on his forehead and there was a hole in the back window of the prime minister’s official car.
