  1. Taiwan is a separate country and will never be part of Mainland China again.

Germany was split into two countries and till about two year before the re-unification, nobody could imagine that they would become one country, let alone that quickly. Therefore, nobody can predict if China and Taiwan or North and South Corea will be unified.

Maybe the China (Mainland), Taiwan, Hongkong, Macau issue can be solved by writing "countries where Chinese (Mandarin or Kantonese) is the main language".

I remember there was an international student's day in my university in England, and the Taiwanese were not allowed to have their own booth as Taiwan is not recognized by the United Nations.

  2. Can you not enquire of your friend's reason for having it on his page? Or perhaps there is no particular reason other than that he likes the design . . .

I did (long time ago), I don't remember what he wrote, but the reply didn't answer my question (his writing in English is often difficult to understand). So it's safe to assume he just liked the design and that he doesn't know what swastika and star of david symbolize in Europe. He is friends with some people from India, which had some similar pictures in their albums or even on their profiles.

  3. However, if you talk to the driver about where you want to go, he will assume you want to hire him as a taxi and then you will have to negotiate the price.

Simply asking where he goes increases the price as well.

I still don't know how to find out where a bus is going (without asking the driver and thereby hiring him and having to pay more). Baht busses in Pattaya have been the subject of many threads over the years. I found the attached document somewhere on the internet, the best documentation I know.

I prefer to stay in Howard's guesthouse so much that I don't consider staying somewhere else unless it's full. The funny thing is that there are moneyboys hanging out in Howards, whereas Sansuk sauna has a no moneyboys policy, but both have the same owner.

  4. My vote would be

I am not from the US or Britain and I don't care about the accent

(as long as it is easy to understand and correctly pronounced and there are no mistakes regarding choice of words and grammar).

What worries me is how English spreads around the world (at least in educated circles). There will come a time when scientific journals and books are published only in English and not translated any more. Meetings in Germany or France? If one person doesn't speak German or French, the meeting will be held in English. In Germany, advertising contains a lot of English and normal people often don't understand it (or understand it wrong).

    I found this:

"America and England are two nations divided by a common language." -Somebody, either Oscar Wilde or George Bernard Shaw. Or maybe both.
  5. I recently read that "Swastika" and "Sawatdee" have the same root. But imagine my surprise when I saw this picture on a Thai friend's facebook page, and I found some more similar pictures on facebook.

  6. For me, the limiting factor is holiday allotment. I go once in summer for about 20 days and once in winter for about 20 days (always trying to include as much weekends and public holidays as possible). I would like to go three times a year, but then with shorter stays airfares would have an unreasonable part of the total cost of the holiday. Airfares is the major single cost. I always fly economy, often with a stopover. I spend on average 1000 Baht per night for hotel. Since I first came in August 2009, nothing has changed.

  7. VW or the end of the Iron Curtain? Both directly linked to the National Socialism and Hitler. I would go as far as to say that every political event after 1933 can be linked to these.

  8. I agree with most of what HeyGay/LMTU said.

However Jupiter 2002 (not 2003) has it's boys on stage in shirts (shirtless during the show, but without numbers as far as I remember). Not what I am looking for in a gogo bar.

And the Royal Palace / Saran Rom are is not suitable for first time visitors. From my few visits there (and what I read on the net), boys speak very little English, so it's advisable to speak Thai. And even worse, the number of boys can vary significantly, every time I was there it was hardly worth the time to get there and back.

  9. I go to Chakran on every holiday in Thailand (which is twice per year), and I always enjoy it, even though I don't get laid most of the visits.

These daily themes have been going on for a while, and they force me to come on specific days (I love underwear, naked is ok, masks are a complete turn off for me). Furthermore I found out on my recent visit that on weekends every guest receives two small towels (they have about 3/4 of my waist circumference, to it takes some skill to use both towels to wrap around my waist and constant re-arranging), whereas on weekdays large towels are available (you can get them on weekends for a fee?) - well, I think some Farang I see would have problems to wrap the one large towel around their waist as well. LOL So I have to remember to bring my own large towel when I go to Chakran after Chatuchak weekend market (which fits well regarding time and location).

I wondered what the Group Masturbation Show is (the Thai text simply translates as "Group Show").

  10. I wonder that nothing relating to Hitler and the Second World War or Soviet Russia is in the list.

    6. Che Guevara

    7. Napalmed and Naked (this is the famous Vietnam War photo of the naked little girl fleeing a napalm attack)

are minor incidents compared to Hitler and the Second World War or Soviet Russia. Just look at the recent outrage about the students in Chiang Mai in Nazi uniforms. But I can't think of any iconic picture of this time (maybe the Red Army rising their flag on the Reichstag - comparable to the picture from Iwo Jima, but the event was of much greater importance - Berlin versus a minor island in the Pacific).

Now after reading the "Most read threads" let me add the picture of a man in a circle with four arms and legs by Leonardo da Vince and the Apple logo (apple with bite), if I remember correcly Apple was recently valued the most valuable brand?

  11. I have the € sign on my keyboard, but I prefer E or EUR (and USD, GBP, THB).

Getting up at 4 am (and back to sleep 15 min later) is no problem, for 20 EUR I would do it every day!

The other trap I sometimes fall into is spending more time considering a short hotel booking than evaluating an investment decision many times greater in magnitude.

The same is true for me. However you have an active influence on the hotel price (by searching a cheaper hotel), whereas my investment decisions (e.g. bying stocks or precious metals) are subject to arbitrary fluctuations in the market, buying or selling in the morning can make a difference of 1% compared to bying or selling in the afternoon, but I have no influence on it, so it's not worth thinking about it.

  12. I do all my booking online. I read somewhere that the website records your request and if you come back, it increases the price.

I used opodo for most bookings, because I like the +-1 day flexibility. However, I am flexible over up to two weeks, and finally I found a website that gives prices for a seven-day range: bravofly.com

And then I found that a flight that costs 854E on opodo costs only 832E on govoyages.com plus a booking fee that depends on the time of the day you book and is up to 20E. However, this booking fee is 0E between 4am and 6am (time in France), so I set my alarm clock and got up at 4am to book the flight!

Booking flights always takes time, check prices over weeks, optimize price and times of departure and return (I prefer to fly over night, from Paris to Bangkok and back as well), optimizing stop overs (because these flights are usually cheaper than direct flights). Now the booking for my next holiday is done, so I can sleep in peace!

  13. I know a boy from a host bar in Sunee who not long ago moved to Bangkok because he has 20000 Baht dept with someone in Sunee and can't pay it back (he borrowed the money for the funeral of a relative). So he simply fled Pattaya and stays with friends in Bangkok.

I met him in Bangkok, we did some sightseeing and as he was broke, I gave him 1000 Baht. He didn't know how to use buses in Bangkok, so I showed him my Bangkok bus map and told him which bus will dirctly take him to the area where he stays. But he prefered to go by taxi! A week later, he called and wanted to meet me again (because he had just 20 Baht left). Sorry, but he doesn't take my advice, I won't help him again (at least not until my next holiday in Thailand).

  14. I have always wanted to enjoy drinking wine but I don't like the taste.

I don't understand this. Why do you want to enjoy something you don't like? You wouldn't start smoking and try to enjoy it as a non-smoker or get a tattoo and try to like it.

I drink no alcohol. No beer. No wine. No hard liquor. Nothing. I just can't seem to enjoy the taste.

Same for me. When in Thailand, I sometimes drink up to one bottle of beer (because it costs the same as any other drink in bars), but then I need something different.

I have never been drunk. I would like to try it one day. :)

I have been drunk once, and that's enough for my life. As I don't like the taste of most alcoholic drinks I tried, I figured out that it's better to drink a small amount of something with a high contents of alcohol than a lot of something with a low contents. I overdid it, ending in coordination problems and vomiting. However the effects of feeling happy as described by others failed to appear, I just had problems keeping my balance, but my mind was completely clear.

I like grapes, but I don't like wine or raisins. Making wine or raisins is turning something good (grapes) into something bad.

  15. There is also the "Moonhouse" (restaurant and guesthouse) if I remember correctly adjacend to "The Full". Last winter, on one occasion I noticed the following: "Moonhouse" was full and "The Full" was empty. LOL.

And not to forget Lido Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria! I like Italian food and if after some days of Thai food only I want to eat Farang food, this is the place to go for me (if I'm in the area).

  16. Definitely! When I go to gogo bars, I note down numbers of boys which are my type, but which I don't want to take now for various reasons, in order to come back later the same holiday or to know for my next holiday which bar has the highest number of cute boys. Unfortunately, by then many of then work somewhere else.

Many other areas of life where I find it difficult to come to a decision, usually I'm overwhelmed by choice. For example buying toilet paper. There is an entire aile in the supermarked with dozens of different brands of toilet paper. The only way out is to buy the cheapest.

Recently I bought a WLan card (10 EUR, about 420 THB) for my laptop on ebay, it took me weeks to come to a decision and I sped probably two hours spread over many days until I finally settled for a model because there is an overwhelming choice and I have no previous experience with WLan.

Fortunately, I have no problems what to wear for the day or ight. I just grab into my cupboard and take what's on top. This seems to be a favorite problem for women: cupboards full of clothes and yet nothing to wear.

  17. I had a look inside, even sat down and made a choice of massage and masseur. But then the manager told me that expected minimum tip for 1,5h massage (my choice) is 1500 THB and for 2h massage 2000 THB, in addition to 700 THB for 1,5h massage (don't remember which kind of massage I wanted) I quickly calculated that this will be fare more expensive than I had thought and excused myself.

The major problem was rather that none of the masseurs was really my type, otherwise I would have stayed and paid. So I can't say anything about their rooms or quality of massage.

  18. I do prefer Pattaya more and more. On each holiday, I stop in Bangkok (as this is where my holidays begin end end) for some days and go to Pattaya for some days.

Pattaya has a higher density of available boys than Bangkok, the prices (hotel, drinks) are cheaper, there is less felt air pollution (I have no numbers and no health problems, but the sheer number of cars, people and cooking with open fire in Bangkok must create air pollution). Bangkok has a larger choice of day time activities, but there is enough to see around Pattaya as well.

Samui (visited once) and Chiang Mai (visited once) dont't have enough choice of boys in bar (I'm very picky), but with a boyfriend it would be fine.
