Fire Damages Gay Bar in Pattayaland Soi 2.

Just after midnight on Monday evening police and the fire brigade were called to Pattayaland Soi 2 to douse a fire which had begun in an advertising sign on the side of the Wild West Boys go-go bar building.

A large crowd of onlookers gathered to watch the blaze, giving Pattayaland Soi 2 its largest crowd seen on the street for many a long year.

The fire brigade took almost half an hour to put out the blaze which is thought to have been caused by an electrical fault. Police investigators are in the process of checking the actual cause of the fire.

"FIRE AT WILD WEST BOYS A-GO-GO BAR IN SOI PATTAYALAND TWO

A-Go-Go boys and customers ran for their lives from the Wild West Boys go-go bar. A neon sign short circuited and caused flames to erupt on the fourth floor. There were no injuries.

On 12 June 2007, at 2 AM, Pol.Lt . Chanathat Nawakunransri, Pattaya, was notified that the neon sign on the fourth floor of Wild West Boys, located at 325/85, Soi PattayaLand 13/4, Pattaya Second Road, Nongprue, Banglamung, Chonnuri. Pol.Col.Suthin Sabphueng, Superintendent, along with a team of police officers with 4 fire engines rushed to investigate.

At the scene, amidst a large number of beer bars and A-Go-Go bars located on the soi, foreign tourists and Thais were panicking and running through the smoke filled soi. Officials learned that the fire was on the fourth floor of the building. The first floor contains a go-go bar and a beer bar. Above the bar are rooms for staff to stay. The neon sign burst into flames on the fourth floor of the building.

The fire had not spread to other parts of the building. Staff members used chemical extinguisher, unsuccessfully, in an attempt to put out the fire. Officials immediately coordinated with the electric department to cut off the current before using water to douse the fire. It took about ten minutes to extinguish the fire. Fortunately, nobody was injured.

Mrs. Nisachol Gerdmee (30), who resides at 403/117, Moo 12, Nongprue, Banglamung, Chonburi, the owner of the bar and Mr. Steve, her Australian husband, told the officials that while the A-Go-Go boys were dancing in the bar, they heard an explosion followed by the lights going out. Smoke and flames spewed from the neon sign above the fourth floor.

Staff and foreign customers ran out of the building to avoid getting burned. Some of the staff attempted to use a chemical fire-extinguisher to extinguish the fire but to no avail. The fire department was called and they were able to put out the fire, avoiding any injuries. There was about 10,000 baht in damages. Officials took a report and will try to determine the cause of fire."

Most venues have only the one entrance, which is also the only exit. While fires in these venues are an extremely rare event, I wouldn't want to be too far from the door if one breaks out, especially if the venue happens to be crowded. It's certainly something to think about.
