Al Gore to Meet Surayud in Bangkok Next Month

Former US vice president Al Gore will discuss global warming issues with Prime Minister General Surayud Chulanont during his trip to Bangkok next month.

Vachara Phanchet, vice president of the Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC), said Gore's visit to Thailand has already been confirmed by his staff agency.

He will arrive on August 8 by a private plane.

Gore will meet Surayud and the energy minister to encourage the Thai government to become more concerned about the problem of global warming.

The meeting will be held at Government House at 4pm. After the executive meeting with the prime minister, Gore will deliver a talk at the Oriental Hotel at around 7pm and then spend an hour in discussion with the 300 participants. Gore will leave Bangkok on August 9.

"We hope Mr Gore's speech will be of benefit to PBEC's members and Thai society. We also would like to encourage people to adopt a business policy which shows more concern about environmental issues," said Vachara.

The dinner talk will focus on global warming and its impact on Thai society. The event is open to PBEC members and specially invited guests. Most of the participants will be govern?ment officials, scientists involved in environmental issues and representatives of the business sector.

Vachara said Bangkok will be the first place in Asia where Gore will be speaking on global warming issues.

The organiser hopes Gore's speech will have a positive impact on the people in Thailand and Southeast Asia.

The event is sponsored by PTT, DNM Strategies, Siam Commercial Bank, Thai Beverage, IBM, the Government Savings Bank, Green Spot, the British Dispensary (LP) Co, and the Nation Multimedia Group.

Surong Bulakul, executive vice president of international trading at PTT, said Gore had decided to visit Bangkok because the Thai government has implemented sound environmental policies such as the use of natural gas in cars and in public transport vehicles.

Moreover, Gore's speech will enhance Thai government policy.

PTT has started an environ?mental campaign to use unleaded petrol and a reforestation project, launched 10 years ago, to honour His Majesty the King.

After Gore's speech, PBEC will publish a brochure to dis?seminate his comments along with information about global warming.

Anond Snidvongs , a climate-change expert at Chulalongkorn University, who has been invited to join the event, said it was an opportunity to ask Gore about his support for global warming projects conducted by Chulalongkorn University and his support for Asean countries in improving their capacity to monitor the global warming impact in this region.

"I would like to know what Gore will propose for Thailand and what support he will give to Asean. I think his visit will be a hot topic in the short term but I urge the government to be concerned about longterm policies that will provide sustainable solutions to global warming," he said.

Don't now overmuch about Gore - just the usual - but I do know that anyone who goes jetting around the world spouting off about global warming is a hypocrite.

In fact of all the people I've seen on TV telling me I've got to change my ways to save the world I reckon my carbon footprint is smaller than any of theirs.

So there.

So Gore's meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss what Thailand can do about global warming? Serious subject but, in reality, rather funny underlying premises (that the Prime Minister or the Thai Government would actually ever do something about anything....).

While I would guess the Thais will do nothing, perhaps they could simply legislate a decree that Thailand's carbon imprint shall be reduced by 50% (or whatever) in 2 years. Much like the pronouncements that all illegal drugs and poverty would be totally eradicated in 2-3 years.

Just this past year, there was a serious (worse than the lousy normal) air pollution problem in Chiangmai largely caused by burning of the fields....and the government in October forbid further burning. Of course, last November and then again this April, I travelled the main highway between Chiangmai and Chiangrai and saw many burning fields (you could only see the smoke a few kilometers from the burn sites so it probably went "unnoticed").

Al Gore is a socialist and accepted money from the Chinese COMMUNIST army to help him and x-rated President Clinton get re-elected. Also, if man is causing global warming, then why is it getting warmer on the planet Mars? Is President Bush driving SUVs on Mars? The reason Al Gore is saying man is causing global warming so he and his socialist buddies can enlarge governement and invade our everyday lives.

Thailand, please do America a favor, and keep Al Gore in Thailand. More about global warming: if the earth did not go through cycles of warm and cooling, we would still be in the ice-age. Also, if the world is warming like Al Gore is lying about, then more land would be freed up to farm and feed the encreasing population on this planet. So global warming is a good thing. Can you tell I do not like Al Gore?

Can you tell I do not like Al Gore?

It was certainly difficult to figure out . . .

I suppose if we do start entering into another ice age, then all we have to do to prevent it is to drive our cars and keep the factories going. I could also simply talk. According to some, that would provide all the hot air the planet needs.

"Al Gore snubs Thailand visit -

(BangkokPost.com) – Al Gore has canceled a scheduled appearance in Bangkok to give a talk on global warming scheduled for next month due to workload. The former US Vice President was originally scheduled to arrive in the capital on August 8 but his representatives have now confirmed that the event will not be taking place due to Gore’s heavy workload.

Gore had earlier accepted an invitation from the Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC), an independent business association that links economies of the Asia-Pacific region to come to Thailand to talk about global warming.

Ever since the 2000 election which he lost to President George W Bush, Gore has been channeling his energy on saving the planet from irrevocable change through global warming. His documentary on this topic, “An Inconvenient Truth”, gained worldwide popularity and won an Oscar for Best Documentary in February this year."

Possible he read this trail and got upset?

Clarification on Al Gore's Thai visit sought - Bangkok Post

APINYA WIPATAYOTIN SARITDET MARUKATAT

Vachara Phanchen, vice-chairman of the Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC), is seeking clarification from organisers in Hong Kong about a planned visit to Thailand by former US vice-president Al Gore, which now looks to be in jeopardy. Mr Vachara left yesterday for a business trip to Macau and will use the opportunity to confirm with the PBEC and DNM Strategies, both based in Hong Kong, details of Mr Gore's trip to Bangkok, his aide said yesterday. ''He is concerned after reports citing the US embassy said that Al Gore will not come to Thailand,'' the aide said, adding the fate of the trip would be clear next week.

DNM Strategies is responsible for organising the trip to Thailand by Mr Gore. It is working with PBEC, an independent forum on business interests for countries in Asia and the Pacific.

Mr Gore has become a prominent figure in the fight against global warming after his documentary film An Inconvenient Truth won a prestigious Oscar award in February.

PBEC, DNM Strategies, PTT Plc and other business alliances earlier announced that his trip, to talk about his campaign against global warming and environmental problems with environmentalists, business and government leaders, had been set for Aug 8.

A source close to the issue was surprised by the organisers' announcement, saying Mr Gore had never put Thailand on his schedule.

''His decision not to come here has nothing to do with the military coup,'' the source said.

The former US vice-president had informed the US embassy that he had no plans to visit Thailand, according to the source.

Sounds like he doesn't know whether he's cumming or going. Maybe he found out that Number 23 at Tawan has already been taken "off."

Something about they turned him down because he wasn't a big tipper.

Oh man! That one is as bad as most of mine! Well, I've heard another rumor, that in order to keep Thailand from being overly disappointed another even greater hero is coming in his place.

I've posted his picture . . .

And, here is some sage wisdom from him on the environment: "It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it." Now, don't you think listening to more of his remarks would be even more worthwhile than listening to the sainted Mr. Gore?

Why? You don't like him? You think he is wrong on Global Warning? Tell me more please.

The earth may be warming, but not because of humans. The earth goes through warm and cold cycles with or without man's help. If man is causing global warming, then how come it is not getting warm on Mars? The claim man is causing global warming only advances the goals of socialism where government takes over more and more of our freedoms.

The earth has experienced warming and cooling periods (most recent manifestation known as the "ice age"). But even if these events will occur regardless of how much fossil fuel we burn, what about the adverse health effects of polluted air? Bangkok has some of the world's worst pollution. Freedom doesn't simply bestow on the individual the right to poison the atmosphere around largest population areas at will.

Hmmm......maybe because people aren't on Mars? Just a hunch.

While I'm no expert on global warming (the notion that our carbon emissions are causing more problems for the earth than what the normal warming and cooling cycles do), the vast bulk of the respected scientific community of the world say it is happening. Until I know more than they do, I'll defer to their expertise. Plus, when Rush Limbaugh calls them "eco-nazis", then I want to believe them.

I'm not an American, so maybe I should say nothing, but I am a huge fan of Al Gore, and pray every day he will run for President.

Hope some of you guys are inviting him down to Jomtien ;)
