First to make clear , on day 6 my tip was 4000 not 4000 on top of 3000 agreed originally and 1000 was fair extension price for 3 hrs more. Way I look at the issue is that in order to economize I'm offing too many "also run" boys. I don't whore in my country , stopped it when discovered Thailand and can't care what salary in LOS is. If boys present reasonable request I pay it, if they seem to be too demanding I try to bargain it down in one stroke, as you suggest, either he accepts my offer or me his counteroffer if any. Other farangs problem is not mine , as you noticed there's plenty fish in the sea and they , like me, have option of economize or paying what boys are attempting to suck out of them. Sure I can stand firm by 2000-2500 offer with take or leave approach but I don't fly through half the world to make even. I also find that taking private tour and guide is worth an expense due to liberty of devoting as much or as little time to a site as you want. With group one is restricted by the program and often inevitably more time is spent on lunch and obligatory visit in commission paying stores than on the site itself. Advantage is that at times some doors are open to groups only, group tours are often much cheaper. So I'd say each option must be weighted on it's own merit. Day 6 If one bothers to read these reports from rainy season trip may notice that it is actually very little mention of rain. There’s good reason for that, other than first day storm and occasional short drizzle so far there’s no rain. Skies are sunny and only reminder about wet season so far is humid in the air. nothing new as many glob trotting backpackers would agree, theft from locals is less a problem that theft from other travellers specially in dorms at hostels. Or traveller you recognize from your hotel spots you on the market or in restaurant , claims to forget money and asks for small loan to be repaid immediately when back in the hotel never to be seen there again. Had this twice in span of 7 years , hotels we were staying were very small to easy to find me and shockingly perhaps in both cases culprits were Swiss, not nation exactly famous for dishonesty.

Day 5 That was morning when I finally figured out what is wrong with my tablet ( having it plugged when reinstating power in the room ). We are supposed to be in the middle of rainy season but weather so far is hot , humid and sunny. I took motorsai taxi to Bali Hai pier to see that new Pattaya’s toy – ferry to Hua Hin. There’s only one sailing a day and ferry already departed but two other identical vessels were still moored at the pier, costly back up I thought. I got that bright idea that if I decide to extend my stay in Pattaya I will make day trip to Hua Hin and back just to see how it is. Then meandering through walking Street and adjacent alleys I came to 2nd Rd to catch baht bus to Jomtien as another option I’m entertaining in case of extension is to move to 2 nights there. I went for a walk along the beach , now partially demolished due to all that construction and walking along concessions for a first time this trip I realized that it is low season as chairs were empty everywhere. Perhaps timing was partial culprit, it was between 1-2 so lunch time but quite empty it was. Going back toward Jomtien complex I was tempted to stop in Bamboo bar since it seemed to be well staffed and patronized for time of day but decided to keep walking. Jomtien complex was deserted at that time with one exception when I was passing by – Fah massage was sporting more than half dozen guys lingering at front and all of them quite attractive so after surveying realm of complex it was no way I could resist temptation. Problem of which boy to choose I solved easily simply by grabbing nearest one. Lao boy named Chai, left me to take a shower , returned shortly after and started massage with fast and long stokes I like . Jet lags are killing me at either end and usually 2nd and 3rd days are worse than 1st. I don't take any chemical stuff in order to fight it , like reader above i try to fight it by listening to my body. What helps is that I generally don't sleep long hours and even on Sunday wake up at 6-6.30. What I noticed it that with age lag suffering becomes worse and worse but there's benefit too - long haul flights become more and more bearable.

I'm also frequent user of motorbike taxis and never neither in BKK nor in PTT had any impression I'm in dangerous situation. In Saigon once I took motorbike taxi all the way from airport downtown to my hotel and as one can see, survived to tell the tale.
