I think it depends on what is the main issue for the person. When it comes to social issues (Gay rights, DADT, Gay marriage, HIV funding, etc...) I think most gays go Democratic. At the same time many gays think the Democrats are good at giving us lip service and not much else, so why be loyal. Sort of like a blow job thats not good enough to get you to cum. But right now, social issues are not many gays primary concern. They are unemployed like so many in this country is right now and want a decent job. They are concerned about their pocketbooks, a lack of jobs, the fear of higher taxes, and a record national debt. Issues that are considered conservative issues right now. Another thing I think is with more acceptance of gays, more gays are now becoming a part of Corporate America. Obama and the Democrats are getting a reputation of being anti-business. An anti-business climate will not help businesses to start hiring again. I may be off base but that is my view on it. I have often said I do not vote for a straight party label and this year I voted for both Democrats and Republicans. NO ONE should take my vote for granted. I voted for a Republican against my Democratic Congressman this year. (BTW the Democrat got re-elected in my district without my vote).

As a state that many associate with the Tea Party, it may come to a surprise to many that Kentucky's second largest city elected an openly gay man as mayor. Kentucky's largest city also has had a gay rights ordinance for several years. http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2010/11/02/Gay_Mayor_for_Lexington_Ky/

I found this most interesting. Almost 1/3 of self identified gays voted Republican in Tuesday's Election. Maybe the Democrats shouldn't take the gay vote so much for granted anymore. Note the story from Politico: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1110/44743.html

I think Independent Sen Lieberman and Democrat Sen Ben Nelson will both swing with the Republicans in close votes.
-
NO!, I saw this story today also and said WHATTTTT!!!!!

My predictions: 58 House seats gained for the GOP and 8 gained in the Senate for the GOP. If by chance they can get either West Virginia, California,or Washington State it will be bigger.

I remember that 2 years ago there was much talk about the Republcan party being dead. Well if that is so, this election will definitely be the raising of the dead. Even with some of the borderline candidates the Republicans are putting up, I think it will be a landslide for them. It would probably be even worse if they had a few better candidates. In my area I thought people were pissed off 2 years ago, but it is nothing compared to this year.

Arrrrrgh, now I must rethink my vote for the Democrat even if I don't like the Republican tea party guy. Today the state's largest newspaper, which is very liberal and almost always endorses Democrats, printed a story they've been investigating for some time. It seems our Democrat Attorney General that is running for the Senate, tipped his brother off that he was under investigation for possibly dealing drugs. Then told his brother to seek an attorney and then met with the brother and the attorney at the AG's home a few days later. The story might seem suspect coming out so soon to the election but it seems the paper was afraid that it would appear they were covering for the Democrat if they waited until after the election since they support him. This is actually the second time the brother had been tipped off about an investigation of him for drugs. The first time was by a narcotics detective that was a friend of his. Giving a 2 day notice before they searched his house. Of course they found nothing. Geesh, time to hold my nose but still vote. Well there is one debate left Monday night, that should be interesting plus can't wait to see the new TV ads next week by the Republican on this with one week left before the election.

NPR Fires Political Analyst Juan Williams Over Muslim Comments
KYTOP replied to TampaYankee's topic in The Beer Bar
I agree epigigonos but think she should fire herself for saying the following about Juan Williams after firing him: "whatever feelings Williams has about Muslims should be between him and his psychiatrist or his publicist take your pick." She did later apologized for the remark. It is also very appropriate for Lucky to reference a NYTimes piece on the subject since Ms Schiller left the NYTimes in 2008 to head up NPR. -
For all of you in the US... Do you plan to vote in the mid-term elections? I have voted in every election and primary since I turned 18, except once when I got called out of town at the last minute. There has been much talk about the enthusiasm gap this year this year between Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, whites and minorities. Commentators seem to think the enthusiasm gap will favor the Republicans. I plan to vote as I always have because I feel it is my duty as a citizen. Most people I know say they plan to vote but I must say I am surprised by some of their comments. The most surprising was from my best friend. He is gay, a Democrat, and Catholic and has always voted Democrat to my knowledge from our past conversations, unlike me who has a tendency to vote for people in both parties. Over dinner the other night we were talking about the US Senate race here in our state, between the young moderate Democrat State Attorney General and a physican Republican that is a big Tea Party candidate with libertarian views. I have been leaning toward the Democrat all year and my Democrat friend shocked the crap out of me when he said he was going to vote for the Tea Party Republican. He said he was tired of all the crap in Washington and feels things need to be shaken up. He said he felt there was no better way for things to be shaken up than by voting for the Republican. He looks at it as sort of his protest vote. My mother also surprised me. She is a life long Republcan back from the Eisenhower days and she had told me she thought she might actually vote for the Democrat this year. I'm really scratching my head here. Then last week the Democrat starting running a negative ad questioning the Republican's religion from something that may or may not have happened 30 years ago. Pissed my mom off so bad she now is also going to vote for the Republcan as is my oldest sister who had been a strong supporter of the Democrat. She thought he was cute, lol , known worse reasons why people had voted for a person. Looks like the Democrat's ad back fired at least with my family. As for me, and there is still time to change my mind, I plan to vote for the Democrat for Senate (even if he is cute, lol), the Republican running against my Democrat Congressman (I never liked the guy and I've met him twice), plus a Republican for Mayor. Our local government has been contolled by Democrats since the 60's and it is time for a change there. So again I will split my vote. So do you plan to vote or sit this one out?
-
I think the jury is still out and Obama has at least 2 more years. But honestly so far I'm not inpressed and am starting to regret my vote.
-
Hummm, let's see here..... Money and Politics connected. Nothing new with that idea.
-
But you'll find that the majority of our tax code was actually written by the Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee.

NPR Fires Political Analyst Juan Williams Over Muslim Comments
KYTOP replied to TampaYankee's topic in The Beer Bar
A couple of years ago I was waiting in the airport in Montreal Canada to return to the US. A man of obvious Arab or Muslim descent was also waiting across from me for the same flight. Two uniformed Canadian officers approached him, asked for his passport, and then escorted him away from the waiting area. After awhile they returned with him and allowed him to board the flight. You will also see some of this in Europe. I think it is not just a US thing. Right or wrong it is part of the world we live in and I don't know why it is so taboo to at least have a discussion about how people feel about this. I always enjoyed Juan William's on NPR and Fox News. He is definitely no conservative. I watch Fox News' Sunday morning talk show with Chris Wallace and Juan always adds a balance to that show. It is also reported that some other NPR reporters have stated negative opinions about Christians and the Tea Party and yet they were not fired. Double standard???? -
Here's a link to a great op-ed Friday in the Rutgers University newspaper: http://www.dailytargum.com/opinions/stand-up-to-homophobes-1.2350492

For any political junkies out there, I think this is the best political website to keep track of what is going on nationally: Realclearpolitics http://www.realclearpolitics.com/ They have articles linked from many points of view from several news media. Plus they have the lastest polls on races from across the country and do averages of many polls to score each race. (Just click the poll tab near the top of the main page) It's a good place to keep track of what is happening in races not in your area that will still affect us all. As a political junkie I find myself on this site almost everyday as the mid-term elections get closer. When I was active in a trade organization, before I retired, I attended several lobbying conferences and classes. Everytime they mentioned this site as the one that most of the political leaders from both parties watched closely each day.

Looks like Williams got the last laugh.

It is called ratings (Advertisement Dollars), that is why any TV show exist. Your watching her, even if it is out of hate, enough said. Why is she a "Pudgy slut"? Just because she got pregnant in High school by her high school sweetheart? Give me a break!!! Why do Gay people who are bashed so much by people that don't like us, so quick to bash others? Sometimes I think gays are the worlds biggest hypocrites. If you don't like her mom, big deal, don't vote for her if she runs for something, I won't vote for her either. But give the kid a break!!! At least the girl is making money to support her kid, doing much better than that high school dropout ex-bf of hers that left her high and dry more than once.
-
I agree, plus he won in a fair election. I also had seen this story on a cable news show. It is a shame when the schools teaching our kids are more homophobic than the kids they are supposed to help guide in life. Looks like the school needs to learn from the kids.

I always enjoyed things or words with double meanings, Therefore KY.... It stands for the State in which I was born and very proud of (Kentucky) and also for a very known brand of lube. The last part because I am a TOP. Thus KY_TOP.

Margaret Cho, now that ought to be a blast to see.

I'm not having any problems at all with the site.

At the same time he can do so much now that he is out. Do you think only Republicans are in the closet? I know more gay Democrats in the closet than Republicans. Yes some are involved in politics. I think this, added to Bush's former lawyer arguing for gay marriage can only help gays to further advance in society. One of the last real bastions of people staying in the closet is Professional and College sports. Thats were I'd like to see some big name finally come out while he is still playing. I know it would be hard. Seems several out themselves after leaving a sport.
-
Thanks alot, now I can't get that song out of my head But maybe I'll dream about the cute guy tonight.
-
Just because he was involved in politics should not make this a Political subject. I think you should move it back to "Lucky's Place". The battle he went thru with himself, because he is gay, is something most gays also go thru in their life. Some come out when they are in High School (almost unheard of when I was in High School), College, maybe after marrying and realize that doesn't make them straight, some later in life, some never in their life. It is a comflict that all gay people go through and we should discuss it as such, maybe it would help someone. I am very glad he was able to take this step at this point in his life. I know nothing about his life and what things affected his decision. He states he realizes he could have done more if he had outed himself earlier. I think many people think the same thing sometimes. I know some that regret being out after how it effects their family. A battle and decision we each must face based upon our own individual lives. I wish him well with his decision and hope it may help others. Here is the link to the article were he talks about being gay. Read the whole story I think it is a great story: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2010/08/bush-campaign-chief-and-former-rnc-chair-ken-mehlman-im-gay/62065/
