  1. You may be right but Uncle Wally didn't think so. Best regards, RA1
  2. Just like BO "won" the Nobel Peace Prize? Best regards, RA1
  3. Once again the Republicans do not get their act together. I don't know if I am more reminded of the boy crying wolf or the boy with his finger in the dike. PRP. Politics are pitiful. Best regards, RA1
  4. I have always thought the journey more important than the destination so I have flown over a lot more countries than I have visited. But to add my little list: Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, USVI, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, St. Martin, Denmark, Greenland (part of Denmark but unique), Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England (all part of the UK but also unique each), Iceland, France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Crete, Corsica, Egypt, Bahrain, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Kuala Lumpur, Brunei, China, New Zealand, and Australia. I would have stopped in Saudi Arabia and a few other countries but they would not give me landing permission. As you can see, South America and Central America are mostly or entirely left out. Some day.... Best regards, RA1
  5. John Glenn is/was a personal favorite of mine. However, remember two things about pilots (and especially test pilots); one, even though they are "full" of the "right stuff", very likely they could not make a living doing anything else; two, the US astronauts, to include John Glenn, had to fight very hard to not be "humans in a monkey capsule" on top of a rocket. RIP John Glenn. Best regards, RA1
  6. Many of my liberal friends were not happy with the choice between Trump and Hillary. No doubt they voted for Hillary. But, perhaps surprisingly, now that Trump has won, they are basically willing to wait and see what happens. One thing that surprised me was the number of "older" folks who liked Bernie. I was not surprised at the young folks who did/do. Best regards, RA1
  7. Mike Pence said he did not know if this was a proper venue for those comments but they did not bother him. He recommended the play as being worth seeing. Talk is cheap but at least it was a reasonable response. Best regards, RA1

    Slip Sliding Away

What happened to Garfunkel? Did he slip slide away? Probably sort of, yes. Everyone would like to think that "early" polls have "special" meaning. But, they likely do not. As always, the ultimate poll is the national day of voting for (in this case) the president. Speculate all you wish but neither your opinion nor mine will meet the ultimate test or so I think. Best regards, RA1
  9. To state the obvious: My pipes are definitely clogged. Best regards, RA1
  10. Is there a difference between not doing what one promises and not being able to do what one promises? Of course, technically there is but I am referring to the result. Trump definitely has too much blow but maybe not the kind you mean. I don't think he drinks or does drugs. His EGO is enough. Best regards, RA1
  11. Two comments: Those who didn't like Trump before, still don't like him. Those who didn't like Clinton before, still don't like her. Two things scared me about the debate: One, Clinton might be able to do what she promises. Two, Trump might not be able to do what he promises. Best regards, RA1
  12. Hang gliding seems a bit like parachuting for fun. Why leave a perfectly good airplane? Best regards, RA1
  13. True, the movie revolved around this question but it did not correctly describe the actual incident. From many sources, it is more than likely that Sully could have made it back to LGA, but, not with the human factors (and airline training) involved. Most agree this was the logical conclusion. The movie was not factual in many regards to include a dispute with the NTSB. I do not often attend movies. I thought this a good movie. I did not think it was based on fact. Best regards, RA1
  14. I find it amazing how different political viewpoints evaluate the various media stories. Conservatives view the media as being mostly liberal and in a protective mode for Hillary. Apparently, Liberals view the media as giving Trump a free ride. Likely neither is completely correct. Politicians are currently viewed at the bottom of the heap with both Hillary and Trump being roundly distrusted. True as far as I can tell. However, this nation needs to do SOMETHING different. Is Trump that someone different? Only time will tell. Best regards, RA1

    Sully, the movie

155 alive passengers can't all be wrong. Best regards, RA1
  16. I suppose a movie has to have a human conflict, which is what this movie turned into. I am sure a really technical movie would be boring to a non-aviation audience. This movie has two conflicts. One being the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) making the assertion that the aircraft could have returned to LGA or diverted to TEB. The second being Sully's anal fixation on not wishing to be a hero and being concerned beyond professionalism in his passengers. The latter are honorable intentions but when one has nightmares over reliving the circumstances, it could become a certifiable mental issue. Of course, I would think and re-think what happened (were I the one flying). I do that after every flight, good or bad. But, I do not lose sleep over it. Maybe I would if the media were hounding me. The resolution of the NTSB conflict turned on Sully and Skiles (the First Officer) being persuasive about the board neglecting the human factor. There is no training for this accident. New aircraft, when certified, are brand new with the crew being aware of what will happen. The FAA includes a specified delay before the crew can react to the emergency or problem. That is the human factor. Once the simulations included, "reaction time", the simulations failed to return to LGA or make TEB. I have little argument with the technical aspects other than many were not included. Most of the ones that were included were fairly accurate. Of the technical things I observed, 3 stand out. One, I do not know if the flaps can be extended without engine power or the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) running. Sully started the APU (which takes time in and of itself to do), so his flaps likely worked (as depicted). The simulations did not start the APU. Yet, they still had flaps. Two, the simulation pilots consistently reduced the power levers to idle when they landed on the runway. Why, if there is no engine power? Long standing habit? Three, I think it is difficult to cease the rotation of a modern fan jet engine, birds or no birds. My non-aviation friends who saw the movie with me seemed to enjoy it. I am glad that I went. The NTSB did not harass Sully about this as depicted but did thoroughly investigate the accident. Best regards, RA1
  17. Cheap counts in more ways than simply being frugal. My sister gave me for my birthday last year an S6, apparently not wanting to wait a few days or spend the money for an S7. So far it has not over heated, started a fire or exploded. And, it brought me slowly into the 20th century. No rush to get to the 21st. Best regards, RA1
  18. I was getting a car window replaced that had been ruined by a rock thrown by a lawnmower. As soon as I heard about the first attack, I went to my office and watched a TV in the lobby and saw the second attack then and there. All that was sad and bad enough but it was doubly brought home to me several days later when I went to EWR to retrieve and aircraft. While preparing to land at Newark I could see smoke still rising in the distance where the towers were formerly. Sometimes TV tends to take some of the reality out of an event. Seeing some of the results in person brings it all back. Best regards, RA1
  19. Not a joke. Do not travel with Tom Hanks. I do not go to the movies very often. The last time 2010 or so. However, I intend to see this one on Monday with friends. I already have some preconceived notions about this saga but the movie likely is somewhat different. Various pilots have suggested that Sully could have turned back to LGA and have attempted to prove this with simulator profiles. A sim is always easier than real life. In real life, one cannot just "freeze" the action and discuss/start over. Personally, if I had been flying, I might have tried for TEB. I have been there many times. I know what it looks like and where it is in relation to LGA, the Hudson, etc. However, a miss would have been tragic, not only for the pax but folks on the ground. Not a good expectation. At this moment, I have no argument with the decision to take the river. I will let you know if I change my mind. Best regards, RA1
  20. I had a house fire some years ago. Various friends and experts opined that all "technical" products would never work correctly in the future. They were correct. Water may be the ultimate solvent and it is also the ultimate "destroyer". TV's did not work, after a time. Sound devices, ditto. In other words, all electronics were throw-away. Best regards, RA1
  21. You are probably correct that these guys got drunk and spent all their money on hookers, but, how this defames an entire nation escapes me. Brazil has plenty of problems without these two chiming in. I only wish the best for Brazil but until and unless they get rid of some of their (all seems impossible) crooked pols, things likely will not improve by very much. I am reminded of a fairly recent accident where Brazil air traffic control ran a corporate jet and an airliner together over the jungle. The airliner went down but the corporate jet continued to a safe landing. A Brazilian judge tried to keep the pilots in Brazil which was silly and unconscionable. All this is similar to winning a war. Whoever wins gets to write the history. In whichever country one happens to be, the country gets to write the rules. Up to a point. Best regards, RA1
  22. I agree that "other" diseases pose more risk. OTOH, it only takes one "bite" from a mosquito to produce whatever it happens to be carrying. Best regards, RA1
  23. Everything seems to be sexually transmitted, especially lust. It is insane to think that "controlling" mosquitoes will have any noticeable effect on this virus. Likewise suggesting the wearing of long sleeve shirts, long pants, etc. i.e. enough clothes to have no exposed skin. Maybe the gals of the 1920's had the right idea. This might work in Alaska, Greenland or other far north or far south venues but don't try it with 110 degree heat index. As seems to be well known, abstinence and condom use is not very effective. A vaccine seems to be the best hope. It might be interesting to see if more US resources are spent on a Zika vaccine than on a useful HIV vaccine. Best regards, RA1
  24. Thanks for your kind words. Best regards, RA1
