It's an amazing thing. The latest Economist poll shows Trump 44/Biden 42. That two point spread is the same as the RCP average. Of Trump's supporters, 73 % say they are voting FOR Donald Trump, and 25 % say they are voting AGAINST Joe Biden. Of Biden's supporters, 52 % say they are voting FOR Joe Biden, and 47 % say they are voting AGAINST Donald Trump. Since most Biden supporters voted for him in 2020, the percentage of 2020 Biden voters is the same. Almost half of people who voted for Biden in 2020 and plan to in 2024 are voting against Trump, not for Joe Biden. It's possible this will hurt Biden. Because support for him in lackluster, whereas Trump's base is strong. More likely, it will be like 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023. Because Trump and his base are viewed as extreme and anti-democratic, a lot of people who aren't really fans of Biden will vote for him. Just like in 2020. The fact that so many are willing to vote for Biden because they don't want Trump is an asset to Biden. At least it has been so far. Trump's never been able to get over 47 % of the vote. Right now 3 % of voters are in the Stein or West column. Most of them say they are open to changing their minds. So it's a good bet that many, maybe most, of them will vote AGAINST Trump in November by voting Biden, even if they are not FOR Biden. There's obviously a bunch of undecided voters who weren't crazy about Biden in 2020 and are less crazy about him now. But, when push came to shove, they did vote for Biden in 2020. That's likely more votes the end up going against Trump, even though they are not for Biden. I take it as great news for Biden that the economy is now #3 on the list for Independents. If inflation were 20 %, I'm pretty sure the economy would be all Republicans talked about. And they probably won't blame Biden for the stock market being at an all time high. So they have to make it about criminal migrant hordes. Just like they did in 2020. I mean, it worked for Trump in 2020. Why not run the play again? 😉

So that huge difference in death rates is because in California deaths slowed down, thanks to vaccines.. And in Florida they sped up thanks to people - Trump supporters - not taking them. In California there were huge differences in counties, based on vaccinations rates. The most liberal pro-Biden counties had death rates that were a fraction of the most most pro-Trump conservatives counties. And it was all about vaccinations rates. The same thing happened all over the world. Sweden championed letting COVID run rampant. They ended up with 2,677 deaths per million, or over double the 1,204 deaths per million suffered by their neighbor Norway. The Swedish government ended up repudiating their own policy. There are examples like that all over the world. Australia to this day has 933 dead per million, or about one quarter of the US death rate. And Australia's rate was a fraction of what it is now during their lockdown. It skyrocketed AFTER they opened up, and the vaccines came out. Because the vaccines could not protect very old vaccinated seniors, who were most of the people who died in Australia. Meanwhile, in the US, lots and lots of middle aged Trump supporters, and even young men with kids, died because they wouldn't get vaccinated. So what Australia proved is that more thoughtful policies, and especially use of vaccines, could perhaps have kept most of the Americans who died alive. But these are people who refused to get vaccinated. Why are you for death? What is it about death you like? The trend since Summer 2022 is that fewer and fewer people say thing are getting worse. The AWOL recession has not appeared, inflation is 3 %, the stock market keeps hitting all time highs, middle class average net worth is up 30 % in the last four years, and rising. Any reason to think the trend won't continue through November? 2. If the trend continues, the Trump-Biden match in 2020 suggests Biden will win handily. It is a fact that for 20 years, in every Presidential race, people who say they are better off than four years ago vote about 3 to 1 to keep the party in power. People who says they are worse off vote about 3 to 1 to throw out the party in power. This of course makes common sense. The strange thing about 2020 is that people who say they're just as well off usually split their vote 50/50. In 2020 they did not. The people who were no better or worse off than in 2016 voted 2 to 1 against Trump. That suggests that there was something about Trump they really didn't like. Could it be? 3. In 2016, 41 % of voters said their financial situation was "about the same" as four year ago. They voted 47 % Clinton, 45 % Trump. So even in a year when Trump was the new guy, and the change candidate, he could only get 45 % of that vote. In 2020 Trump got 34 % of the "about the same" as four years ago vote. If he gets 34 % of that vote again in 2024, he is toast. If he gets 45 %, like in 2016 when he was the change candidate, it will be a very close race. Which is more likely? These are the questions that I think will determine who wins. But I agree with wise Lichtman. The poll above shows the economic trends are on Biden's side now.
