I thought I'd add my experience about sauna Thermas as I've been going there for a few years now. I remember being very nervous the first time! 
You pay the entree fee, get a key with a locker number and go change. Once you are changed you go down the stairs where the working boys will be waiting or wandering around, and on the bottom most level there's a pool and bar. Some providers will approach you, some won't. If you see someone you like just say "Hey" to them and they will most likely lead the conversation.

You can also pay for a room. This is always by the hour and they come at various prices, depending on the size. All rooms have a full bed in them with linen and towels so the more expensive ones are simply larger. The comfort remains the same. The price list for the rooms is visible at the entry. 
After you are done with the session some providers will take a shower with you, some won't. Then you both go the top floor (street level) where the lockers are. You then get the money from your locker. The provider will be waiting for you in the bathroom next to the entrance (you can't miss it, it will be very clear where it is) and you give them the money there. I don't know why that is the spot but it's been that spot for as long as I've gone there. 
The providers don't mind it if you have your phone with you (I use it for Google translate).

I just got back from BCN last week and I went to the Thermas 3 times. Thought I'd share my experience. The best advice I can give is if you don't like the hustle and you're not street smart - don't go. I later talked to a guy in Barcelona who used to work there and he gave me the full low down.

They were walking/ looking away. I had no idea how I'd offended them. It turned out that Christian has warned all the other guys off me. I was his customer now. From what I could gather later, he's a pretty bad guy - runs with some bad people so once you're his customer you get no other offers. To be fair, this gave me the oppertunity to have a proper look around.
One more thing you should know - mobile phones are allowed throught the place - this is fine with me - however, make sure you don't allow a hustler to take your picture and whatsapp details - apparently it's common for the guys to try to extort you when they have a photo with you. That said - this didn't happen to me. Aside from that the club that night smelled horrendous, the pools had that smell of chloramines where the pool cleaner is reacting with urine. weather-wise, October is great for both cities as the rain season will have been well over
beach-wise, I like Recife more with its long wide beach which you can walk to from your hotel by simply crossing the road. The only downside you can't really swim as it's shark-infested (and it's serious).
sights-wise, Salvador has an upper hand as it has an incredible history and an amazingly beautiful old town. Recife has pretty and colonial Olinda in its suburbs too, though - a nice half-day trip. Recife's airport is much closer to the city than Salvador's. The other important consideration is security and safety - Salvador is defo more dangerous and you need to know where you go. Even in the old town, local folks were screaming at us on the street on several occasions: "don't turn right here, perigoso, turn left" 
GP-wise, Salvador is a bigger city and is considered the capital of the black Brazil - so there goes the prevailing type. A couple of saunas are good. Recife is more diverse but a bit more next-door'ish, but a couple of excellent saunas and I always had good time there.
It's a matter of personal preferences - despite Salvador being more historically rich, if I needed to make a choice for myself, I'd choose Recife, but YMMV.
If you are talking specifically mid-week rather than mid-October, then Salvador may have an edge as Tuesday night is an incredible night in Salvador with the old town coming alive for a great street fiesta. In Recife, mid-week would be certainly much quieter, with the best sauna nights being Thurs, Fri and Sat - I was shocked to find out that Sunday is a dead day in Recife, even though it's one of the best days elsewhere in Northeast like Fortaleza and Sao Luis
