TopJohn5 started this thread as a sauna newbie seeking clarification on the Brazilian sauna scene. In São Paulo it’s Lagoa. Now to Rio. Although I have been there many times could someone who has been there more recently give him a clear statement on venues and opening hours? I know when I first went to Brazil I had the benefit of a very detailed post on a now defunct website by an individual known as Trilingual who was a legend on Brazil. Could we now provide the sought after assistance to TopJohn in a courteous and civil manner?

It is not unreasonable for a newbie to seek clarification on the sauna scene. I have been to Brazil 9 times although, for obvious reasons, not for a few years. The scene has changed dramatically in that time. In São Paulo Fragata moved the closed and Lagoa changed address. Information has been provided on this forum but I have sympathy for someone new absorbing it all.

Which Rio hotels do you like?

With respect that location would be convenient for 117 but very little else. -
Where do you go after the saunas close?

Go back to my hotel and sleep it off. -

I was just reading TripAdvisor reviews on the Atlantico. If you couldn’t find a sauna boy there is always the bed bugs to keep you company. -

This hotel gets very mixed reviews on TripAdvisor. -
Which Rio hotels do you like?

I defy anyone to name a city of comparable standing anywhere in the world that has such an appalling choice of hotel accommodation as Rio. At all levels the picking is very, very lean. -

Did you go to Lagoa in São Paulo? If so what’s it like at the moment? -
Can anyone report on the Tawan opening?
-
It is prime the Tawan had a large stable of fit, muscled highly attractive men. On my last visit 3 years ago it certainly had “larger boys” as you have described them. Fat, totally out shape, heavily tattooed. Nothing to compare with what we experienced 8 years ago (roughly) and earlier. I have such fond memories of the early to mid 2000’s. It will be interesting to see how it emerged from this hibernation.

I have one single solitary hope. The quality of the boys improve compared to my last visit.
-
I sincerely hope it can return to its glory days.

Are they now operating from the one premises if so which one?

Do I assume a happy ending?

Watch your phone in the Sauna!

About 10 years ago I was in the change room at old Lagoa getting dressed preparing to leave. A Brazilian guy opened his locker and in a highly agitated state ran around the locker room with his pants pointing to his empty pockets. I don’t speak Portuguese but I didn’t have to. It was clear he had been robbed. He asked everyone the number for the police (that I did understand.) I might add the guy on the front desk showed no interest. As I left the building the victim was on his phone presumably ringing the police. -
I have reported this here on a number of threads but the Tawan on my last trip was a shadow of what it once was. The “boys” on offer were only a fraction of those working there in Tawan’s heyday and were all out of shape and heavily tattooed. I remember the Tawan in its glory days when there was a smorgasbord of boys on offer, playful, handsome and many with magnificent bodies. The consensus seems to be that the Internet has changed the gay scene in Bangkok forever.
-
As I wrote on another thread, the last time I was in Bangkok the Tawan was dreadful, a tragic shadow of its former self. It it reopens I only hope it can regain some of its past glory.

Any updates on Thermas? -
I would love to agree with you but honestly on my last trip it was just dreadful. A handful of fat, out of shape heavily tattooed “boys” on offer. I recall Tawan in the early 2000’s and it was just wonderful. A smorgasbord of fit handsome men who were friendly and playful. Oh for those glory days!

The Tawan used to be my favourite Bangkok bar. I was last in Bangkok just short of 3 years ago and the Tawan was a tragic shadow of its former self. I only hope if it reopens it can reinvent itself.

I have nothing much to add except I too have very fond memories of the old Fragata and regret that I never made it to the new.😢
