Although I disagree with you on a number of aspects, I like how you enjoy the Middle East to the fullest. Many of the countries in that region have a very different societal set-up from what we are used to in Europe.
To start with, I disagree with your vision of homosexuality in 'the West'. Born in Western Europe in 1984, I am proud of the achievements this region has made in terms of including gay people in every aspect of society. Moreover, other minority groups are equally free to express their identities in the way they wish. All of this is protected by the rule of law and, importantly, accepted by the majority of society. That is a huge achievement and an enormous advantage, and it is not something I believe we should even begin to compare with the situation in the Middle East today.
Allow me to tell you a personal story from my days in Cairo, where I lived between 2015 and 2018. In that post-revolutionary, chaotic society, my Egyptian friends - gay, straight, and everything in between - would dream about the freedoms we Europeans take for granted and seem increasingly willing to sell out to the far right at every election.
In the neighbourhood where I lived, Maadi, gay parties would regularly take place in people's homes. In order not to raise suspicion, girls and 'masculine-looking guys' would be invited as well. At one of these events, the police did show up. One of the neighbours must have called them. I felt terrified. My Egyptian friends looked beyond terrified.
Many of them were detained; others were not. Of those who were detained, most were eventually released, but they spoke about the humiliation they had experienced. Two were kept in the police station for a couple of weeks. Their names and reputations were eventually damaged enormously by the authorities, their families, their friends, and their wider communities. As a foreigner, I was left alone. This is the Middle East. It is beautiful, warm and sexy, but many places are also brutal dictatorships in which you would not want to be born for a millisecond.
I often return to Egypt. In my opinion, it is an amazing yet deeply troubled society. Everyone wants to leave. Many Egyptians feel lost. Depression rates are enormous, and for many, survival is the number one priority. For them, sex can simply be fun. It is an escape. It is a great feeling. It can even be a personal revolt against cultural norms they feel unable to defeat, despite the attempts made during various recent revolutions.
When I am there, I always have great sex. No one questions whether I look masculine or feminine - whatever that might even mean. No one questions my sexuality. Who cares? Different genders? What are you talking about? People just want to have fun. They wantto be aliove, something they seem to miss out on in so many occasions. Unlike in the West, I believe are seen for who you are, regardless of your age, height or body. Perhaps this is because recognising one another, and being recognised by others, has become so important in a society where so much else feels uncertain. It may even be one of the main things people ultimately wish for on a broader, global scale - and something that is deeply embedded in their traditions and culture.

I'm in BKK now. Staying at Voco on Suriwong - excellent value btw and a good base. Flew in in Air India £2400 business return bought at the ticket desk at LHR.  I was waiting for a flight to BCN to get fucked raw in Thermas for a few days and somehow thought Bangkok might be fun after a 12 year absence. 
 
i've visited BKK over 100 times since the mid 80s. I'd consider myself comfortably well off - i sold my business years ago and live well of property and other investments. The bars used to be teeming and relatively good value. But 400b for drinks is absurd imo. Sut with three or four boys, buy a couple of rounds, choose one or two to take off (expectations of 3k ea) and tip the others 200/300 ea and you've spaffed £300 to £350 by the time you've showered the spunk off your face  
It may be cheap by UK standards but It's put me right off when there's plenty of boys on grindr for 1500-2500   
 
i've had a fun time, but raiding the atm for 20k at a time almost daily is absurd.  I have much more fun in PP or KL (just host a party) and for far less.

Apologies in advance if the info is already on the site but I think these things change a lot. I am planning a trip to Brazil in a few months. I have been a few times before and always played at the saunas, never hosted guys. I will be in Rio for around a week with a friend, do any hotels easily accept visitors or is Airbnb the best option. 
 
do the airbnbs tend to have security where the guys have to register , should I be asking before booking about the guest policy?
 
we did Colombia last year together in air bnbs and had a great time with no problems

I have been to Rio twice. One time I stayed at the hotel and another time at an Airbnb. The hotel was a complete hassel. Even though I booked a two person room. They kept trying to charge me for guest I would bring back during the day. In fact it was kind of hostile towards me. But I learned my lesson. The second time I got an Airbnb. I with the Airbnb host I explained to them like @Latbear4blk did I have friends that I want to hang out with and cook dinners for. They had no issue with me bringing anyone over. The doormen never gave me any problems. But I introduced myself to them struck up conversations with them even tipped them when they helped me with deliveries during my month stay. They never gave me any push back and funny enough. It also helped that my Airbnb host was gay. But based off of some forum members . You do have to vet the host. Cause some have said you can have people over. Only to reverse what they said. But I would also think that if you have don't have any issues as far as a renter on Airbnb and no negative reviews by hosters. Then its should be less of a problem. But definitely make it know that you will have " old firends" over.
 

I think it is a matter of preferences. I prefer Airbnb, but that is just me. In Brazil, I often have GPs hanging out with me for long hours, being in an hotel room would not offer the variety of activities we can enjoy in a full apartment.
About whether or not you can bring visitors, it depends on the hotel and on the Airbnb rules. When I find an airbnb that I want to rent, before confirming the booking I contact the host and explain that my intention is to hang out with friends during the day (I do not like overnights). So far, I've never had an issue.
Although I do not prefer overnights, many times the guys asked me to stay. I had an issue with that only in my last time in Rio. I rented an airbnb quite similar to an apart hotel, and they had a strict policy about guests leaving before 10PM. However, in my experience this has been the exception and not the rule.

El CONDE and costs $1500 pesos a night. HOTEL BELLA MAR is an hourly/overnight hotel that is very cheap, but has no wifi and no keys to the rooms. If HOTEL BELLA MAR is sold out go next door, it’s the same set up with the same prices. 
 
CRUISING: Popular cruising spot Duarte Park is under construction. The only other options are Marlowe’s, Apolo Spa (gay spa with dark room), Casa Paco’s, Esedeku (gay club with dark room), C.
