So true! I lived and was sexually active throughout those ghastly years. But I was living in Asia where there was not the same bombardment of news about AIDS and all the newspaper obituaries as in the USA. I do not know how many Asians died but the safe sex message did eventually get out and a great many gay men paid attention to it. I was based in Hong Kong and visiting Bangkok at least half a dozen times a year. The bars were all open and some packed at the week-ends. The boys in those I attended had all been instructed about condom use being vital. After a few years, I was saddened when i learned that one guy I had met years earlier had died of AIDS.
The situation in Japan was different. Japanese sauna owners, for example, considered AIDS a western disease that would not affect them, even though westerners like me were often there. There was no safe sex message that I noticed (although I could not read Japanese). Eventually the owners took note and the government finally decided in 1985 to close all the gay saunas. But it was way too late. I had three friends who all had birthdays around the same day in October. I attended their birthday party in, I think it was, 1987. Re later txt, if 3 on a bike, no insurer will pay out if there is an accident.  This is, i hope, pretty obvious.

I wouldn't count on that. Insurers will always pull cover if the Bike or driver is unlicensed, or other infractions. You need to be realistic  about an insurer,  especially  a Western insurer,  dealing with Cambodia. 

Fine, ok, understood  but it shows the risks, then what happens if you are hospitalised! The statistics  for motorbike accidents   as you probably know are horrendous.  And, as I know, the older you get, the less you bounce!

(So I have reinserted the Victor Victoria trailer.) Never seen that in this Board before!
In later life she always thanked Jack Warner for not casting her in My Fair Lady as that really opened a new door to a different career first as Mary Poppins. She is certainly a great actor. I don't know why but I have always found her a bit too saccharine. The only movie I have really loved was Victor Victoria. I have the DVD and play it sometimes for young Thai friends who also seem to love it. And that is not because of the gay element, more the comedy. I always admired Robert Preston and thought he could never be bettered than in The Music Man. But I consider his role in Victor Victoria his best.
 

It's been almost 33 years since the actor River Phoenix died from an overdose of several drugs. He was just 23 but one of the leading young actors of his generation. His coming of age drama movie Stand By Me directed by the late Rob Reiner is being re-released to mark its 40th anniversary.
Most may recall My Private idaho where he plays a gay street hustler for which he received several accolades. For one so relatively young, I had no idea he was in 16 mostly major movies. These are discussed in an article in Thursday's Guardian newspaper.
Three decades ago, queer parts for straight-identifying actors were still thought of largely as awards bids (see William Hurt’s transparently covetous performance in Kiss of the Spider Woman) or career-killers (even at the end of the 1990s, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio all turned down Brokeback Mountain). In that context, the boldness of Phoenix and Keanu Reeves in unselfconsciously playing sex workers in My Own Private Idaho, a kind of Midnight Cowboy cross-pollinated with Shakespeare’s Henry plays, should not be underestimated.

I'll admit something. Until I was flipping through some channels on TV some months ago, I had never heard of the newish sport named Padel. Based on tennis and using the same scoring system but played in an enclosed court with large table tennis-like racquets, it is fast becoming popular around the world. Many major sports stars like Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray own teams.
There are lots of Spanish and South Americans in the teams. Last night one caught my eye. Manu Castano is just 17 but playing in the pro-League. I am not sure why Spain is producing so many major young athletes. Prior to his wrist injury we all wowed at the achievements of 23-year old and already winner of seven majors titles, tennis player Carlos Alcaraz. Spain has just won the World Cup with its 19-year superstar Lamine Yamal in the team. Now 17-year old Manu Castano is likely to become king of the Padel courts.
