BANGKOK — The son of a Thai politician is under fire after he drove a BMW recklessly and rammed into another vehicle. This sparked public outrage and drew comparisons to the infamous 2012 hit-and-run case involving Red Bull heir Vorayuth “Boss” Yoovidhya, who fled the country to avoid prosecution.

However, the national police chief insists that this case will not go the same way.

On April 17, Pol. Gen. Kittirat Phanphet, commissioner-general of the Royal Thai Police, responded to a viral clip showing a red-painted BMW swerving in front of a pickup truck on the highway near the Rangsit–Nakhon Nayok exit late on April 16.

The pickup lost control and crashed into the roadside. The elderly driver, 65, suffered broken ribs and remains in intensive care, while a female passenger, 64, sustained minor injuries.

The incident sparked a wave of public criticism after it was revealed that the BMW driver was a local council candidate with close ties to a well-known local politician.

Pol. Gen. Kittirat, who had seen the video, condemned the BMW driver’s behavior as “disgusting” and unacceptable in society.

For some reason I've seen "white" transliterated to "red" more than a few times. I'm not a linguist and can't explain it. Even a VN guy I know well will say red when it's clear to me he means white.

That Vorayuth Yoovidhya remains at large after mowing down and killing a traffic cop while doing around 200kph along Sukhumvit at 5:00 in the morning in his posh car with drugs and alcohol in his system is a scandal the government and the police cannot - and should not be allowed - to live down. I believe some senior officials have been removed from posts and one or two others jailed. But this chapter of known deception - yes it was deception! - on the part of the authorities remains a frightful disgrace on the Thai Justice system. How they were allegedly unable to track down this criminal when sightings of him all over the world had appeared, even several times here in Thailand, is an indication of the stench of corruption in high places. And the pittance they offered the young policeman's widow was massively degrading on the mega-rich family.

If ever there was a case where money talked louder than justice, this is it. I believe the latest word is that the statute of limitations has passed. Well, in my understanding, partliament can change laws. In this case it very definitely should. That man deserves to spend much of his life in jail!

Keith, In Thailand, red license plates are temporary, issued to new car dealerships for vehicles awaiting permanent registration. They indicate that the vehicle is not yet fully registered and is intended for limited use,
