Biological Differences

The foreskin is not just "extra skin"; it is a complex, multi-layered structure with two distinct types of tissue: 

• Mucosal Inner Lining: The side that touches the glans is a mucous membrane, similar to the inside of your eyelid or mouth. It is non-keratinized (soft and moist) and contains specialized "ridged band" tissue.
• Outer Layer: The outside is typical pigmented skin, but it is unique for being thin, highly elastic, and devoid of hair follicles.
• Nerve Density: The foreskin contains thousands of fine-touch receptors called Meissner’s corpuscles. Stretching regular shaft skin increases its surface area, but it does not "grow" new specialized nerve endings; it simply spreads existing ones thinner.

Some time ago I wrote about my father, a doctor. At the start of WWII, he joined up and like hundreds of thousands of other troops was transferred to northern France. While the vast majority was based close to Dunkirk, one group of around 10,000 from the 51st Highland Division was sent to the western town of St. Valery. After the many months' long phoney war, Britain evacuated all its troops at Dunkirk. But there were no ships left to pick up those at St. Valery. They were left to face the German onslaught and suffered many casualties.

My father was captured and then moved around Germany in a series of prisoner of war camps, ending up near Gdansk before being liberated by the advancing Russians. Many of his colleagies were intent on escape. As the medical officer, though, he was duty bound to stay and look after his fellow prisoners. Some of those wishing to escape had been circumcised. Their main fear was they would be captured and singled out as Jews and sent to the concentration camps, even though few were Jewish. To try to prevent this, my father devised ways of over time gently pulling the skin at the shaft of the penis to make it look like more like a foreskin. He was clearly successful in that none of hose escapees who were captured were considered Jews. Most, thankfully, evaded capture and eventually returned to the UK.

I hate to think of what might have happened to any escaped POW who did get recaptured. That being said, they would definitely have been known to be recaptured prisoners. My father and paternal grandfather were in the Belgian resistance during WWII, and I think they'd have been shot had they been captured (especially my grandfather, who was a colonel). They helped some Jews escape, smuggled equipment, engaged in sabotage, etc.
