Avoid. Not safe; against cultural expectations, almost no tolerance for public displays of affection.  Only visited for work, will not return.

I'm not interested in public displays of affection. From what I've read, it's a rare African country where homosexuality is not illegal.

It's legal in lots of places that are otherwise unwise for other reasons.

Does anyone have any proof that it is less safe in Rwanda than in Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria or any of the other places guys on here are writing about? Otherwise, I'd prefer first-hand experiences, whether they confirm this stereotype or refute it.

I can't offer any proof but isn't there a power in numbers situation in the places you mentioned compared to Rwanda? Having loads of western tourists in Egypt offers you a bit of cover. Same way, I'd probably be safer getting dick in Dubai, despite the laws on the books, compared to somewhere Pakistan.

But, one tourist, can easily find fun almost anywhere with street smarts, luck, and cash. And I'm an ignorant westernern so I don't know my elbow from my asshole with this.

If you go, please share what you find and stay safe!

More than 40% of African countries  is not "rare".

Last year I met a student from Rwanda in China. He was tall educated and sexy guy. He said Rwanda is quiet and pleasant, very clean country. Showed me photos his family trekking etc.

U have probably completely lost the common sense. All central Africa countries are of the highest possible risk for all tourists and especially for gay tourists. U have a great chance to grab all possible issues at once.

I've lost common sense because I asked for personal experiences in a country I am planning on visiting? Ok then.
