Yeah, my SP place was secure and I actually just booked a repeat stay for December. BUT, the host already sent me the entrance details for a booking 6-months away, which is crazy. The real kicker is that the apartment's front door uses a passcode and it's the same passcode I used last December! Internal safety is a joke if the door's passcode never ever changes and will be available in 6 month's time. I'm now considering alternative options. I loved my stay and loved the building, but don't feel comfortable with the apartment's code being the same when this building has 100 units and all it takes is one neighbor to find it. Another part of me feels paranoid but the unit was brand new last year, now it's been some time. I am going to see what other options I have because that's a miss in my book.

My Airalo e-sim worked like a charm. Just get the app, decide on the rate and activate the moment you arrive in Brazil. Used it in South America, parts of Southern Africa, and many parts of Europe without issue. Great service. My phone is a locked, regular iPhone.

And, make sure they are clear about the process for guests. Is there a "registration" process, if there is one, what is it? I've stayed at a place in SP that allowed guests, but security was fort knox level tight with a 1 to 2 security guards outside the door. A face ID scanner at the front door, then a passcode for the door to the lobby, AND a front desk person. You were SECURE BUT, they allowed guests no problem, lol. As long as you're okay with 2-3 people seeing your hoeing ways. 🤣 In Bogota, their guest policies are all over the place. "Yes you can have guests but you must submit their photo and ID to the Airbnb host 24 hours before arrival, then they register at the front desk, and you pay $8, if they stay past 11pm it's $60!" or "sure, you can have people over, no problem. Just make sure no one sleeps over!" So, get details about what the policy is, not just if guests are allowed.

Yup, my starting offers were always around 150R, usually settled on 200R. Considering what I've spent on just North American strip clubs, at $20-$25 per song, I'm not inclined to haggle over an extra 50R ($10). We pay more to servers as tips for brining drinks. If you're like me, while looking at the JW you might have considered the Sheraton as well. I stayed at the Sheraton last Nov (2025) which was rather fabulously comfortable resort property. The photos undersell it a little bit, with the pool area, semi-private beach, cozy rooms, and very nice lounge for Plats and above. A balcony so close to the beach, where you can just sit out to listen to the ocean waves or watch the sun rise over the water. Fab! But they really treat it like a resort property, even with my status, they were NOT allowing me to really check in early. I think they let me in an hour before the 3pm check in time. But they allowed me me to hangout in the Plat lounge while I waited for my room. There is no food between breakfast and lunch, just nuts, coffee, and water. Next time, I'm hitting the pool. There always appeared to be at least two to three men manning the door. I had no issue brining in a guest but I arrived with him by car and didn't wait around for anyone to object. I just said hello and went with him towards the elevators. Then I happen to snag an uber with him back to Ipanema, since the Sheraton is so land locked and difficult to reach by public transit. I also had dinner plans down there. The guys at the door saw everything and everyone. I don't know if my guest could have come up to my room if I met him in the lobby instead of walking him in myself. Also, the fact that we left together might have helped avoid questions. I did reserve the room with two people as another poster suggested. Upon checking in, they asked for the name of my second guest. Of course, I hadn't met him yet 😉, so just said my friend isn't feeling well so is unsure if he will join me or not. They said it's fine, and he can add him to the reservation if/when he arrives. I was prepared to add my Grato to my reservation if needed as a back up plan. Sheraton Pros: Truly a relaxing property. Can enjoy their lovely pool or walk down to the connected beach without a busy road between you and the water. Pool service was attentive and fast. Lounge is nice but packed at night. But, you can truly make an entire meal out of the spread. Rooms are nice, not modern, but not dated or small. Balcony views are great. Cost less then the JW Marriott in points or cash, and safer. No one's getting mugged outside of the Sheraton's front door as has happened at the JW. So, I've heard. Rooms are larger and nicer then the JW. Sheraton Cons: It's not as easy for Gratos, to reach the hotel since it's not centralized. JW's location wins for meet ups. Since there is a one-lane road to or from the hotel, traffic can delay your ubers. You are free to walk to Ipanema, but I know my ass ain't doing that walk after the sun goes down. I don't know how security is at the JW, but since the Sheraton is so isolated, security notices everything. If you are a slut like me, they may ask questions if you have multiple guests or if your guests doesn't seem like a guests they will. notice. Late check out isn't guaranteed since it's a resort property. They worked with me but 4pm check out was not happening. Typical resort property. Final thoughts. After a couple of days stying in Ipanema I was happy to stay in my gilded-Sheraton cage. I'm planning to return later this year after a couple of days down the mountain. I hope this helps future travelers.

Felt like chiming in from my Nov 2025 adventure. Club 117 had some of the nicest patrons. Had two men help me with my locker issue. Another British patron politely warned me about disclosing too much, after I noted it was my first time visiting to the Grato I was waiting for a room with. The patrons were all so kind and the guys were very hot. I just always feel bad saying no, but hold firm if I'm not into a guy. Only two rejections from Gratos that night. Ah, I miss my early-20s. He was just a pleasure to be around as he helped me scope out talent. If I liked a guy, he'd make the approach, translate for us, and noted my price. Much easier then google translate. But also ridiculous on my part. Some Gratos thought he was my boyfriend. I wish. This is the first city I've visited where I didn't walk more of a block up or down a single street. Just did door to car to door for the few placed i visited before my trip home. But I was also Bridesmaids level sick from bad chicken. I did not like Lago at all. The men were much much hotter in Rio's Saunas and those felt so relax. Sorry to talk Brazil talk, but it may apply to Columbia, but I had the bad luck of the world's most strict Airbnbs. Owner wanted names of guest before arrival. No additional people after that point without a two day grace period to approve the person, three hail marys, the sacrifice two cows, and offering up my first born. Was so darn strict. But the Sheraton asked no questions. I even book an Airbnb to confirm the guest policy and still got burned with last minute guest details.
