On my last visit last June, Raya has dedicated their ground floor entrance and lifts/elevators with Public service Announcements and posters against this type of scam, specifically.

I think it's best to be cautious. Asking to see money on the street is a red flag. If they were genuine you may have taught them this so you did them a favour.

If they wanted to see what my currency looks like, which is a very strange request in itself, I would have just told them to take their phones out and google it.

tell that to those  thousands who are lining up to see Mona Lisa , Rosetta Stone or Emerald Buddha. 

Nothing strange with request to see other country currency, strange part only  is that they are asking that strangers on the street

The only time I have been scammed was in Prague, long ago. Two policemen approached and told me to be careful because there was a problem with counterfeit notes prevalent in tourist areas. They checked mine and told me that they were fine.

An hour later, I was paying for a beer in a pub when I noticed that half of my cash was gone. Half, I emphasise.

They weren't policeman.

When I reported the incident-with some embarrassment- at the local Cop-Shop, I was told that one of the offenders-a portly guy-  had a nick-name there; "Pavarotti"!
