If you actually make the trip - and nothing changes to lift the curfew I've just read is in place from 10:00pm onward - I'd say go early and arrange for a "long time off" wherever you go!

Suggest you stay home until further notice.

Coups seem routine in Thailand, so why would anyone cancel a holiday for this? 

Last one had bloodshed. No one knows what the outcome of this coup will be. I believe 90,deaths in 2010.

2010 wasn't coup. It was just martial law. Last coup was "right after Taksin" - at 2006. Now is fifth coup for past 25 years.

I would certainly monitor things closely, but I'd be shocked if the curfew lasts more than a week or two. Too much business at stake. The whole point of the coup was to introduce some stability to a deteriorating situation.

 

The 2006 coup (during my first visit to Thailand!) shut things down for a couple of days and then things were back to business as usual fairly quickly.

If there is trouble in Bangkok you would be better off in Pattaya, which is not usually subject to demonstrations or violence.

Safety is not an issue. It is safe here. I would not let this deter a trip but I don't go out late at night. You can find boys on Grinder and Gay Romeo very easily.

 

I don't think the curfew will be in effect for a month. I think just temporary. But, only time will tell.

It is still a beautiful country which I am sure I will love it. Even though there's a curfew going on, I would just love to stay at the hotel and look at the whole view of Bangkok from my window. Or maybe if I knew someone from Grindr, I might invite him in and drink something. The thing that I am worry alot would be going to the places which I have never been to. I think it would bother you if you were caught up in violent riots or your hotel was near burning buildings. Perhaps BTS transportation would be shut down and the entertainment areas shut down.

You should be cautious during you visit. As I mentioned before Pattaya has a substantial gay scene with bars, gogos, saunas and even a gay beach and of course many boys who would love to make your acquaintance. It has never been subject to significant unrest.

So about equivalent to an election in some western countries.  Suspect a Thai coup is about as safe too, for any tourist exercising some common sense.

 

I wouldn't go around smugly thinking our democracies are that secure either.

For what it's worth, I believe only about 5~6 European countries have not been under some form of dictatorship in the last century. 

Low spending on defence, economic mis-management and endemic borrowing is hardly a great basis for maintaining a prosperous and free future.  (US exempted from the defence part, they are almost over doing it.)

Just to be clear, as a tourist and with no important things to do, I currently wouldn't travel to Thailand either. I said as much late last year already (limited to Bangkok back then), when the current round of trouble started. Now many would object that a lot of fun could be had during these last few months, and I cannot really argue that point - I'm probably just more risk-averse than they are.

Well as a tourist that has been here for a week I don't see what the problem is, sure there was a coup and the curfew kicks in at 22:00, the bars are closing early but that should only be a minor inconvenience for those that go to the bars (here's a tip, why not go a bit earlier?). Sure the night markets have pretty much been closed off, waste of time setting up only for a few hours of selling, all in all there is no need to panic. I remember the curfews in the Philippines under Marcos and this curfew here is very generous in comparison, just stay away from any protests and you shouldn't have much to worry about. Oh last I saw Soi Twilight was still open early in the evenings.

Back to the original question. With curfew, choices are rather limited. If I were coming for nightlife, I would postpone my holiday. Curfew 10 pm means you should be back in your room at that time, public transport stops earlier and taxis might not be available or overcharge you.

 

Which is the best? You will get different answers depending whom you ask.You should specify what you are looking for.

 

Gogo bar = prostitution, gay club = dancing and drinking, a significant difference.

I'd still go to Turkey and Vietnam, but not other two, reason - differeence in the general level of crime and violence 

I am scheduled to visit starting June 18.

 

I will monitor the situation but I see no reason to cancel. Most of my time is in Pattaya and they have returned to normal with no curfews.

 

I usually spend a few days in BKK at the endif the month and I will make a decision on that closer to the date.

 

The only worry I have is if the airport was taken over again. I just don't think the Army will allow that fiasco to take place again.

 

Besides all those cute boys need money!!!
