Not that I have been there myself but I just stumbled into the facebook account of the first gay bar in Myanmar - at least this is how they claim themselves. New electronic tourist visas are to be introduced by Myanmar on September 1. The tourist e-visas will cost $50,Tourists who apply on-line will receive the visa within one week, but it must be used within three months of issuance and will be valid for a visit of up to 28 days. http://evisa.moip.gov.mm

According to Wikipedia, homosexual acts in Burma are still illegal and a penalty of 10 years to life is the punishment. Although rarely enforced. I was considering a visit, but perhaps there's a good case for continuing to boycott the country?

A recent short side-trip to Burma (Myanmar) didn't throw up any major surprises. Here is a rundown of the current situation as I found it. A British father was injured when a family of four Britons made a dramatic escape from the burning wreckage of a plane after it crashed in remote Shan State in eastern Burma, killing two people and injuring eleven more. So, are Burmese airlines safe? I don't follow aviation closely so a Fokker 100 means nothing to me. What sort of track record do they have outside of Burma? The largest gay festival in Asia will be held this year, 2011, from 13th August to 19th. The festival is held yearly about 20km northeast of Mandalay, for a whole week! Thousands of people from all over Myanmar come to celebrate the Taungbyone Nats. Taungbyone is a religious ceremony to honor two Moslem brothers on the grounds of a Buddhist temple through the Nat celebrations! It is however in fact largely a gay festival. Plan your trip well as ALL of the means of transportation from Yangon to Mandalay is booked during these days. Best is to fly up a day or two before the start.

This year I again attended the Nat Festival at Taungbyone outside of Mandalay. This year, 2009, all of the buses from Yangon to Mandalay were sold out, as was the train. Our hotel room had several sleeping on the floor too! This is the largest Gay Festival in all of Asia and is held yearly about 20km north of Mandalay, for a whole week! My Thai Friend and I will be visiting Yangon (Rangoon) Burma towards the end of September. I saw here that the military has cancelled "visa on arrival". We are going for just 4 days, but the reason for the post is to again encourage the new owners to think about making a separate forum for each close Asian country like, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Myanmar. BANGKOK — Myanmar’s military leadership continued its crackdown on dissent Tuesday, handing down prison sentences of 65 years each to 14 pro-democracy advocates, according to regional news accounts and reports on a Web site for exiles. Sorry fellows that I did not answer some of your questions about the storm in Myanmar. I was in Bangkok when the storm hit Myanmar and went in the following week. Will write a short report later but have some new tourist data to share. There is a new meeting place for local boys in Yangon. Every evening, but especially on the weekends the local gay boys gather on Sule Paya Road starting about 4:20/5:00 at an outside tea shop. Facing the front of Cafe Aroma there are two cinemas to your right, or south. Next to the second cinema there is an outside tea shop with a blue awning. That’s it! Go up take a seat and smile at one!
