  1. I didn't post to this thread originally, because I didn't want to seem mean spirited. Today, I heard that Dennis Ritchie died. Most of you (probably all) have never heard of Dennis Ritchie. Dennis was the co-inventor of Unix and the creator of the C programming language. I had the privilege to work with him earlier in my career. His obituary will not adorn the cover of supermarket magazines, but in fact he did more to advance core technology than did Steve Jobs. Steve was a great marketer. The PT Barnum of our age (and as a marketing guy, I consider that high praise), but steve was not an inventor. The apple was a different PC. It wasn't fundamentally new. It didn't spawn a whole wave of innovation. Dennis did. Huge sections of today's computer infrastructure today is built upon Unix or unix related operating environments like linux, including, amusingly enough, apple. The C programming language was a huge breakthrough and is still the language of choice for huge portions of the market. Steve turned technology into products that people would buy. For most of you outside of the industry, that is all you see. But Dennis invented that technology. RIP Dennis. You were a great man, and in my little experience with you, a nice one too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Ritchie
  2. We love the show. So hope Chalkie gets the vengeance historically he would never have gotten...
  3. My understanding is that the price increase really is mostly driven by the studios who see how well Netflix was doing and decided they all wanted more money for their content. Even so, turning this into two services with two web sites and two accounts to manage for their customers is just a big FU. That's why I quit.
  4. Thanks for the tip. I just can't handle really gory movies. I have the serious hots for Alexander Skarsgard, but not for gory, thanks.
  5. My father and elder brother were both career officers. I got the offer of a full ROTC scholarship but turned it down because I wasn't going to lie about who I was, even if I wasn't out yet. So much waste in human potential in this ban....
  6. We were relatively happy customers until all this. We canceled today.
  7. Seriously. Though for those of us who have read the whole series, he does have it easy. Tyrion is a witty, interesting character. Perhaps the richest character in the series.
  8. Color me selfish, but it will have an impact upon my giving. Mostly at the margins, but I'll give less. For instance, I annually give a fair bit in used stuff to goodwill. I would like either ebay or toss it without the deduction. Several of the charities I give to that are on the margin of my interest would also probably lose out.
  9. I wish I could just turn the brain off, because these boys are HOT, but the awe inspiring idiocy of the scripts made me curl up in a fetal ball and cry. I still made it half way through the first season though...
  10. I'm a gamer. roleplaying games, online computer games, bridge the whole nerd schtick.
  11. Manufacturing. Service industry is too much of a grind for me. I want to work hard for a few years, then sit back and let the cash roll in
  12. Love isn't sex. I'm married to my best friend, a woman. I could not live without her, she is my soul mate. We just don't fuck.
  13. I have an iphone 3gs, and like it, but think I'll get a droid for my next phone.

    True Blood

No, it's that it is just dumb. Any story where the solution is "just shoot her already" and then they don't starts to destroy my suspension of disbelief. But everybody has their own tolerance for this sort of thing. Mine isn't very high. If there is an obvious answer the heroes don't take, I have trouble with the story.
  16. Well, here it seems it is helpfulness run amok. http://jezebel.com/5835109/if-you-want-a-london-library-card-youre-going-to-need-to-answer-some-very-personal-questions They want to know so they can tailor library services and the like to their diverse audience.
  17. Well, for me, the stimulation is as much mental, if not more so, so knowing it was a girl would be a turn off, even if the lights are out. YMMV.

    True Blood

We've been watching True Blood for a couple of years now, and have enjoyed the heck out of it, but boy this season is NOT doing it for me. Don't get me wrong, the butt shots are as hot as ever, and I want to have alexander skarsgard's babies (Or at least I want him to repeatedly try to make me have his babies, however anatomically improbably that might be). But the plot has just gone round the bend dumb, and it has gotten way to romance novel. Anybody else a fan? Anybody else think this season is weak?
  19. We're all across the spectrum. I'm just a kinsey 6 in inclination. Guys do it for me, girls don't. I'm a bit envious of those who have wider tastes than mine. But oh well, we're wired how we are.
  20. Did pussy a few times before I came out - about 30 years ago. No interest now. I'd rather just masturbate to get off if pussy was the only option. It doesn't gross me out, just doesn't do anything for me. I managed it back then because back then I could rub up against a streetlamp and get horned up...
  21. He's not gay. That would require some level of self-awareness. He's a fucked closet case homosexual.
  22. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure this is health related. I was sorry to hear it.
  23. I don't know about tops, but the Marines have the bottoms covered!
  24. Do read George RR Martin. He's brilliant.
  25. I listen to talk radio every once in a while, but just can't take much of it. It's all of the ilk: talk about a bad thing, then make an insane non sequitur explaining how this is all the fault of the other party who incidentally are still raping and eating babies while hating America and helping the terrorists. I wish there were some good conservative humorists. I adore both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. We need to laugh at our politics more and scream less.
