My question was actually if you would incur additional fees from your credit card provider for this sort of transfer or if would be treated like a regular purchase. And if points/mileage would accumulate- completely understand it varies between banks but interested to hear what others have experienced as my bank seems very non-transparent about this.

Has anyone used a credit card on Transferwise? Are the fees higher with a card? I am wondering if I might get points or air miles. edit: I read online that some card providers treat this as a cash advance (no points) rather than a transaction. Still searching on the internet for more information...

I just received an urgent SOS from a boy last night and though I’ve tried to make it a rule not to send money from overseas, I agreed to send him something to tide him over. Michael, what is preventing you from going to Pattaya? The 5K seems better spent on your own transport and hotel stay. And you could have an enjoyable short visit and the chance to sample additional boys.

Yes...but I do not want to get a reputation for handing out gobs of cash. It chafes at me that you get charged extra for labor but what can you do? I would like this presented as a proper “gift” especially since this particular boy with the baby is not an off, merely an occasional drinking companion (for which he does not get tip, only drinks - another story entirely why I am buying gift for a boy I do not off). He and his young girlfriend have some personal circumstances that I feel sorry for. And hopefully if gold, it will not be spent immediately the following day but held on to for real emergencies.

You did not mention which day of the week you arrive. If you arrive on Friday, definitely get a hotel transfer. Many taxi drivers will either be stuck in the city or may decide not to go to the airport due to congestion, leading to a longer taxi queue. The last time I landed on a Friday, I thought to save the US$ 40 a transfer would cost, as that would pay for cover charge and lavish tips for mamasan and wait staff, winning me the favourite customer accolade for the night. 30 minutes in the hot and humid taxi queue later, surrounded by screaming tourists, and I was willing to be Scrooge of the bar.

Recently I heard of a China customer who “sponsored” his boy to stop work and gave him a card from a Chinese bank. The card had no name, only a string of numbers and Union Pay logo, but apart from this was a proper glossy chipped card from a big banking corporation. At first I found this very unusual but now thinking back, this must have been an ATM card rather than a personalised credit card, that boy could withdraw his monthly salary with. Because of China money transfer restrictions, the customer must have felt this was the best way to fund the boy.

Hi spoon, all very good points. I was thinking in terms of a travel or medical related emergency, rather than Ikea! Boy is also quite responsible so I trust him not to splurge on big ticket items. Has anyone bought a gold necklace for boy before and what is the price for one of decent quality? I am increasingly thinking it may be better to offer a “gift”. I do not want to give him cash outright as that may affect expectations of his regular tip.

On Babe, Moonlight mamasan says his recent travels to Taiwan and Japan were fully paid for by customers not “working vacations” - I thought the Taiwan trip could have been for more Bang magazine photo shoots but that is not the case. I wonder if it doesn’t feel odd to him, knowing all the staff (including gay waiters!) have his full frontal pictures to hand which they show off to all and sundry!
