I doubt if it is of much interest to anyone, but after posting on this Board and its predecessor gaythailand.com for 20 years, it is time to call it a day. For my first 13 years I wrote so much about the gay venues in Bangkok – and several other Thai cities – as like many on this Board sex was a major interest. But far from my only one, as those who have criticised my longer posts know only too well. I have posted a large number of photo essays of the trips I have made, both within Thailand – as for example the amazing Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival, the equally fascinating Dansai Ghost Festival and the gorgeous beach at Khao Lak as well as the trips one can make from there. Photo essays have included a host of countries near Thailand like Nepal, Bhutan, several from Japan, and further afield like the Iguazu Falls, Patagonia, the Arctic Circle, Talinn, Petra, Iran, New Zealand, several on Taiwan and quite a few more.
Having been partnered for six years now and with no desire to visit my old gay haunts in Thailand like my partner, I restrict myself to occasional gay posts about Taipei and perhaps a couple of other cities outside Thailand. I no longer fit in with the interests of most Thailand posters. My curiosity about Japan where I lived for some years and other Asian countries is now almost totally restricted to my own interest in history, culture and society which really demand longer posts which some posters just do not like. Fair enough! This is not a blog site.
Let me add this is not a sudden decision. After thinking about it for several months, about ten weeks ago I wrote to inform @TotallyOz whom I met a couple of times in our go-go bar visiting days. I thanked him for running this Board and letting me contribute regularly all this time. Long may the Board continue.

I believe you described the problem. They were operating like a bar/venue for shows on a place/cost for a sauna.

Yesterday was not a good day, as most Sundays in Clube 11. Perhaps this one was even worse because of the contrast with the previous day. I did a programa just to do it. Beyond that, I loved this sauna much more than I did my first time almost 10 years ago. If I end living in Rio, as I am fantasizing with, I would visit Salvador often and Club 11 would be one of the major reasons.

After spending a wonderful week in Salvador in mid-August, I took a two-hour flight north to São Luís for a long weekend. The city is well worth a short visit. I enjoyed wandering through the historic centre, which seemed better maintained than most other Brazilian cities, and felt safe walking around during the day, particularly on the main shopping street. Unfortunately, the beaches were disappointing—the seawater was cloudy and green, and the sand was hard and compacted. Even so, I enjoyed dining in high-end restaurants along the beachfront near Ponta d’Areia each evening.   I also visited the GP sauna, Go.61, which turned out to be a lot of fun with a good selection of GP. Located within the historic district, the sauna occupies a large two-story house.    The ground floor offers an excellent steam room and features a dark room, where plenty of action takes place. There was also a lukewarm sauna, a murky swimming pool (locals mentioned it was rarely used), a large bar, ample outdoor seating, and a stage. The client changing room is in a separate room, while the GP lockers are located in the main corridor, making it easy to check out the arriving GP.   The second floor is where the action really picks up, with four private suites, several free suites, two dark rooms, and a video room. The layout encourages cruising and playful encounters in common areas, especially around the stairwell.   Thursday night was the busiest, with around 20 guys available, and Sunday was also a good day. Friday and Saturday were quieter, with fewer GPs, and at times it felt as though there were more clients than GPs. There is not a lot of GP rotation, so I saw the same faces throughout the weekend. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed all four nights. The quality of the GPs varied, although two guys stood out as exceptionally impressive (stunning guys with dicks over 9 inches). As both were active, I found a willing bottom who happily played the central role in two separate threesomes. Both encounters included enthusiastic participation, and the cost per GP was 100 reals.   I found the GPs to be friendly, relaxed, and willing to spend time chatting with clients. I spent an enjoyable weekend in Belo Horizonte in early September. It was great returning to this wonderful city after my last visit in 2022 and taking the chance to indulge in some of the best food Brazil has to offer. The rain limited my options for outdoor activities, so I focused on visiting the saunas and the lively Mercado Central. This bustling indoor market is always a highlight for me - wandering through the stalls, grabbing a drink, and savouring freshly grilled meat. Saturdays are especially vibrant, with the bars packed full of cheerful locals enjoying a few beers.   Sauna Olimpo
Olimpo has changed a lot since my last visit. Back in 2022, GPs weren’t allowed, but now they’re back in force. Around 15 boys worked both Friday and Saturday, ranging in looks and body types. The system is simple: boys wear blue towels, clients wear white. Rates were between 100 and 150 reais. I usually went with the 150 option, and it paid off—the boys were eager, accommodating, and gave solid service.   The sauna itself is well-run. There’s a good-sized dry sauna, a hot steam room, and a dark cruising maze with several free cabins for quick action. If you want more privacy, there are 5 larger paid suites with clean sheets, perfect for longer sessions. The bar had a fun, relaxed vibe. Regulars like the older guys playing cards in the corner added a nice touch. Music was upbeat pop, with a live DJ Friday and Saturday, and he even checked in with me to ask if the volume was OK.   The entertainment was fun. Friday night had drag queen bingo, which kept the energy playful. Saturday night featured an interactive stripper who walked around pouring tequila down customers’ throats, then shoved his hard cocks in the same mouths. Each interaction lasted a couple of minutes. I’ll admit, tequila never tasted so good.   Sunday evening was a completely different scene. By 8 p.m. the venue was overflowing with younger clients, most of whom were busy with each other. Towels had even run out by the time I arrived. With the towel system no longer in play, it was nearly impossible to distinguish GPs. Fortunately, I’d already had my share of fun earlier at Sauna 1097, so I was content to enjoy Olimpo’s facilities with a drink. The reception staff were very welcoming, and for my next visit, I’ll ask in advance if there are themed parties that don’t include GP.   Sauna 1097
My visit to 1097 on Sunday was a pleasant surprise. I’d found it dingy in the past, with weak facilities and a selection of skinny, rough-looking boys. This time, though, the GPs were better than Olimpo’s: young, lean, muscular guys who were eager and energetic. The facilities aren’t as polished—sauna and steam could use maintenance, and there are no paid suites—but they do have six free rooms that work fine for quick or extended sessions.   The vibe at 1097 is more straightforward: it’s easy to connect with the boys, negotiate, and get down to business. I enjoyed two hot sessions with a stunning 19-year-old and then with a fit 23-year-old GP.   With Olimpo and 1097 just 10 minutes apart, it’s easy to do both in the same evening. On Sunday, I went to 1097 around 4:30 p.m., then headed to Olimpo by 8 p.m. That combination worked perfectly—and looking back, I wish I’d done the same on Friday and Saturday instead of sticking to just one.

I went just to Club 11. I’ve missed the “best days” (Fridays and Saturdays), but every time I went there I could find at least 4 or 5 guys of my liking. On average the sauna had around 15 guys, more twink/lean body types, black/moreno guys.
Guys and sauna vibe appeared to me more friendly than Lagoa and 117.

I will not go. I asked my bf#1 for his input. He told me that in the house lives a group of boys known as the "baianos". According to my boy, they plot to take advantage of clients. Plus, when we watched their iG, he told me that all the boys I would hire also go to Point. One more thing, to the friends who give advice to Brazilians on how to run their business. I may be wrong, but I bet you have no idea on how to run a business when inflation is running crazy. The causes of inflation are in the policy makers decisions, not in the business owners' behavior, they just have to adapt to survive. 

Hi, long time Rio resident / expat here.
This whole back and forth about whether or not there is higher pricing for gringos / tourists is never going to be solved.
The answer is: “it all depends”.
(1) It depends on who the garoto is. Some garotos price themselves higher than some others  — usually because they look like male supermodels or are built like professional athletes, or are hung like a Shire horse — and the market has already taught them what price point they can command.
(2) It depends on who the client is. Often, like with many other kinds of services, regular clients get reduced rates. A client that may not be seen ever again, or at the most only once or twice a year, or who may not see him regularly but also doesn’t provide him fringe benefits like gifts and Western Union, probably should not expect this kind of discount for a programa. 
Also, like it or not, looks / attraction as well as age, charm and personality, do matter to quite a few of the garotos — whether “straight”-identifying or not. The extremely rare superstar client that resembles something like George Clooney, Henry Cavill, Ricky Martin or Idris Elba would get this “discount.” But the overwhelming majority of us clients not blessed with such physical gifts aren’t in this category, and have to flirt with our wallets instead.
(3) It depends on what the client wants out of the programa. Asking a garoto to do more performative or more “difficult” or unusual sex work in a short programa — especially for a visiting, rare client — is more likely to increase the cost. Remember, these are human beings, not machines. 
Yes, there are some garotos who want take advantage, act like scoundrels and charge foreigners more just because they’re gringos and might be naive or unaware of the current market. There are also some who will charge the same, no matter who the client is or what is done during the act. But the price is also to be negotiated and agreed upon in advance, each garoto charges his own price, and he is not obliged to charge the same price as the others, nor is he obligated to charge each client the same. The guys all are independent contractors, not employees of the saunas. The client goes into this knowingly and willingly.
 
It seems like the problem arises when clients take these pricing differences personally. Hey, I’ve also seen the reverse occur: garotos getting upset when they somehow find out that a client paid another garoto more than him! So, it all evens out, I suppose…
Gringos / tourists paying more has always been part of “the game.” It’s not like how it is with gentrifying-areas real estate prices; it’s more like tourist-area restaurants or gift shop two-tier pricing. It doesn’t seriously affect local pricing, and locals already know about the two-tier system. Gringos also try to “game” the system themselves by getting local pricing on what basically amounts to only a few dollars, euros or pounds difference between the two.

Even if you are in a crowd, it is not safe to show phone or to have phone easily possibly taken from your pocket : it can be very quick : someone takes your phone and passes it to someone else while preventing you to run after him. There might be 2 or 3 or 4 persons involved and if you try to react, they could physically harm you. One of my friends had his phone in his pocket during a concert. He felt something in his pocket : a young girl had taken his phone and passed it to someone behind. My friend was sure that she was the thief but she stayed in front of him without moving ...

Personnally, I have 2 phones : my main phone which stays in the hotel and a cheap one with internet access to call uber, surf on the net, look grindr which I take with me ... if it is stolen, it is no big deal
