Being the first day of operation, there were little red carpets where the doors would stop and a bevy of smiling dolly birds ready to help passengers. With the ticket all in Japanese, at that time I had no idea how to interpret the information. Thinking I was in car 6, I showed it to the vivacious girl. "Hai", she said, indicating I wait by that door. When the train arrived I tried to find my seat. Someone was stting in it. Kindly he explained that I was not in seat 1 in Car 6 but in seat 6 in car 1. Knowing the train stopped only for maximum two minutes, I got out, shouted something at the girl and raced down the length of the train. As I reached car 2, the doors closed, the girls bowed and off went the train. I was furious. The only way I could get to Narita on time was a taxi. That cost around ¥26,000 or $200. Today it would be considerably more. On my return to my office a few days later, I wrote a letter to Japan Railways explaining what had happened and enclosing copies of receipts. I assumed that was that. Lesson learned - know how to read train tickets! Imagine my surprise when about four months later my secretary told me there was someone to see me. It turned out to be a man from JR in his hideous green uniform. After some explanation and apologies which my secretary translated, he handed me over an envelope with cash. It was all the expenses I had incurred after missing the Narita Expres, including the taxi fare! I thought - only in Japan! Many years ago I flew to Tokyo, Narita, and left in the seat pocket a small British Caledonian amenity bag. It had nothing valuable in it, but I was very fond of it, as BCal had been defunct as a separate airline for some time. I reported this after I realised, but without much hope. In those days, when departing, you could check in at Tokyo City Air Terminal. So I did. There was a short wait, and I was handed the BCal bag. Amazing. As said, only in Japan. vinapu, Ruthrieston, unicorn and 3 others 5 1 Quote

Bus faster, though, and you can for a few extra dollars book 2 seats together for your own use, stretch out, etc, especially beneficial if you happen to be an amputee and Mavica turns up. Though bus or train subject to long border delays if one of a few known loser punters is caught at Rouses Point with CSAM on their device. pong2 1 Quote

Members unicorn Posted August 15 Members Posted August 15 I will usually book hotels in the Hilton group, Marriott-Bonvoy group, or InterContinental Hotels group, in which case I use their respective websites. I will book with Expedia, Booking, or similar when I travel to small towns which don't host one of the hotels to which I extend my loyalty. So far I haven't had trouble. I might look at Expedia, etc., to look at all of the hotels in a city of interest, but then usually switch to the hotels' websites for booking. I'll get my free nights to avoid very expensive stays, such as Miami Beach in January, Venice in May, etc. I would add that most reviews on TripAdvisor with fewer than 10 contributions are fake (made by the hotel or someone hired by the hotel). I've avoided hotels which have lots of 5* reviews by new contributions, but lots of poorer reviews by established TripAdvisor members. It's much to TripAdvisor's discredit that they seem to put as much weight on obviously fake reviews--even brand-new reviewers--as on reviews made by well-established reviewers. One cannot simply go by the overall rating. Some shady hotels flood the website with 5* reviews. PeterRS, floridarob and pong2 2 1 Quote

We have aother Beachlover on the forum. Apart from lying through his teeth trying to make readers believe he was a mid-20s Australian Chinese businessman from Sydney, he was a bored old expat somewhere in or near Pattaya who flooded several boards and led to the demise of one. More to the point, he posted photos of his alleged travels but made certain that anything which would identify him was blocked out. Now @Riobard does likewise. Is Beachlover your cousin? Quote
