Those who never tried durian always says onion smell when they first come into contact with durian, but I for one can never understand where the onion smells description comes from. And yes, we have onions here too and that smell wont get me longing for durian for sure hehe

This reminds be about stinky tofu in Taiwan.  Personally, I never minded the smell and enjoyed eating it.  Recall several night markets I visited with delicious stinky tofu.  

I have tried durian as well.  I don't really get an onion smell from it, and the smell doesn't really bother me.  I just don't care for the taste in general.  My straight Thai friends don't care for it and often complain about the smell and taste.  lol.

To add a bit, thai durian is very different than the one in malaysia, at least to me, who likes durian. There are lots of durian variants, and their taste can varies greatly, so is their prices. In Malaysia, the most popular expensive variant are musang king and black thorn.
