I follow Ryan - he has excellent Thai content.  He lives up in Isaan with his Thai wife and children.

Thank you for posting the video.  I listened to all 33 minutes of it.  At times it was sad to listen to, but refreshingly frank.

The title of the video is misleading; it makes it sound as if David is unhappy and is stuck in Thailand. I watched the entire interview and he sounds at the very least contented, if not joyous. He looks worn out for 71 but he is recovering from a nasty accident and was a smoker and heavy drinker for a long time. His house is clean and his caretaker appears to be doing a good job. He could be doing a lot worse like the alcos living in bedsits and shoeboxes in Bangkok and Chiang Mai who can't seem to drag themselves away from the bars and the commercial sex scene, not for the sex but for the socialisation! I think he intimated that's what happened to him early on during his stay in Thailand.

I too find him forthright and quite sensible in managing his affairs - living in the here and now. The only thing I would quibble with is his generalisation that one can't have deep conversations with Thais; it may be true of the Thais in his social environment but it's certainly not true of all Thais. I've gained some of my deepest insights about anything - not just things Thai - from my partner and our circle of friends.

Secondly, while it may still be viable to use the concept of kreng jai to explain his experiences in rural Thailand, I wouldn't put too much emphasis on it in urban Thai life in 2026.

I think he's also a much stronger person than he'd give himself credit for; I'm sure the loneliness he speaks of is real and yet he's resisted any temptation to go back to the bottle or start smoking again. I may have missed it if he had, but the interviewer could have asked David whether he'd like to share his contact details for people to get in touch with him for friendship. There may be another gay man (or even a straight man) within an hour's drive who's also looking for a friend and all he needs is one.

A fascinating look into the life of an expat.

I found his particular situation rather sad.

He's already looking towards his own demise, despite being only 71.  And he's living a solitary life with no hobbies to keep himself busy.

To lose interest in sex at such a 'young' age is also very sad.

As far as comprehension of others' posts go, if you do not read them - as of course is your right - how can you possibly know if they offer "new insight" or not? You can't!

And as for "get a life!" Oh dear me! As has been written in these fora before, that is the most stupid and childish attempted putdown because it says far more about the poster who writes it.

A witty or smart person would have come back with a pithy, clever retort or ignored my throwaway comment altogether, not write a three-paragraph response to it.

"Don't they have a life?" wasn't a put down but a genuine question. I mean it's quite sad if a man of a certain age only has the number of likes he's received on an anonymous forum to count as his accomplishments. It would appear that David in his humble abode in the video above has had a much richer and more rewarding life.

After posting that rubbish, I hope you had a good sleep.  How anyone with any sort of fulfilling life has time to post one so full of misinterpretation, assumption and nonsense, beats me! 

As for my life, you have absolutely zero clue of how enjoyable it is and your (another) mis-association with my comment about likes perfectly illustrates that.  Utterly childish! 

I have been posting on this and its predecessor forum for roughly 20 years. My posting syle has never changed and I have no intention of changing unless instructed to do so by the owner/moderator. Odd that I never had complaints about length of posts from anyone like @mauRICE until the last year or so, quite some time after the merger. He has been a member for 5 years - just a baby who should move to another forum if he does not like it here.
